Great video - If you're gonna do it, do it right. Amen. Now then, the OEM ESIM has the weight (rattles when you shake it), but for some reason, the Dorman replacement does not make the same rattle noise when you shake it. Perhaps, the weight is better seated? I am not sure, but there is definitely a difference in the construction of the parts despite the fact that many have eliminated their po456 code using the non-OEM replacement.

Keep in mind that it takes very light vacuum to activate the ground connection. And will give you a false positive when using a power probe. The best way to diagnose this is to use a voltage meter and test for resistance

@@soosiebergeron I would say I was really unlucky since I spent about $100 between the purge valve and the leak detection pump. Neither of them solved the problem, but also can’t be returned for a refund. Once you install a part from Autozone, it’s yours unless it’s defective. I’m just trying to save other people time and money by recommending that they start with the part that actually fixed my car, the gas cap.

@@DiligentDave1966 I did the gas cap, then Auto Zone disagreed about my thinking it was NVLD assembly and sold me on purge valve instead; and light comes back on! 😡So I do leak dedection pump next; light stays off a whole week before muffler & center pipe bust open going thru a flash flood. 🙄Can’t really complain b/c they were original on my 2009. But after pro repair job light’s still coming on shows DTC 440 code! I’m thinking pump is installed upside down by mechanic or it’s a faulty part. BTW: I buy at O’Reilly’s now.

@@soosiebergeron It also depends on which Autozone you go to. The guy at the one I went to said something about the gas cap even though the diagnostic printout said to replace the leak detection pump. I should’ve listened to the guy lol, but even KZbin videos say the leak detection pump is what goes bad on these cars.

Very informative. A customer bought a new Autozone ESIM and there is continuity across the terminals as soon as I hook the leads. When I blow considerably into the ESIM, the circuit goes open. I was wondering if some ESIMs are normally closed?

Thanks for the help. Did what you said. Part checks out ok, via testing. Going to try to fill with fuel with part removed to see if it’ll fill. No engine lights, but zero ability to fill tank. Pump at station keeps shutting off. Next suggestion?

It's not venting properly. Check to see if the Vapor Canister filter is clogged with debris/dirt.

2015 dodge dart. P0456 code. Originally came up as a gas cap. Tightened it. Deleted code. Code came back. 6 months later. P0456. The next step is to smoke the system i presume? I have lost about .5 mpg and it seems possibly a minor amount of power loss. But I feel the turbo compensating. I do not smell fuel in the cabin nor near the tank. *edit I had a valve in the wheel well replaced already.

I just had the same adapter changed and then they used a computer to turn off the check engine light off. I wrnt back to get it scanned and the same codes came up P0456 P0440 There's was one time I had the engine running while pumping fuel in it.,my mistake. I'm getting that fixed Thursday April 7th 2022 My car is due at the air team facility.

Does this also cause P0441? The printout from Autozone recommends replacing this.

Excellent but I wonder??? a old/crusty/faulty internal rubber valve will pass this test because human blows/sucks much pressure, but when measuring 1/2 inch of vacuum/pressure may fail. This is certainly a good test, but i "think" may lead to a false positive when not sensitive enough. great video. thank you.

Mine takes quite a bit of volume of air (blowing and sucking) to gain continuity between the connections. I don't have the lung capacity to keep it connected for more than a second or two. If I breathe through it normally (no force) nothing changes and the switch stats open. That doesn't sound normal to me, so I'm hoping you can offer some advice. Thanks in advance:)

I have a 2000 Caravan 2.4 3spd California. In the past the evap monitor won't run and get the MIL illuminated. Then sometimes the MIL does light and recently the MIL lights consistently. Recently it's lighting all the time. Each time it does light, I check the code before erasing it and it's throwing a conde... P1494 Leak Detection Pump Pressure switch. [I have a $300 Actron hand scanner] My leak detection pump only has two wires for the solenoid valve and it does open when 12-14.3V applied [.9A] and it is sealing when powered off. I have not pressure sensor on the gas tank and I don't see one anywhere on the evap system. When powered the valve does not open all the way but it is enough to open the valve. I suspect the PCM is detecting current fluctuations of the valve opening? but I don't know how that would translate into the PCM to know it the evap system is holding or if the valve is working which it does except for it not locking all the way open. Do you have any idea of how the PCM knows and what could be throwing that code? Edit: BTW even if the monitor won't run as long as the MIL does not come on, it will still pass the smog check because that monitor is so difficult to run with it's parameters the CARB has made an exemption for that monitor. If the MIL come on then you're dead in the water. Therefore it didn't matter if that monitor won't run as long as the other 7 monitors went "OK" I pass my smog checks anyway but now with the MIL coming on before the other monitors can complete, then I'm screwed.

That code is normally associated with a bad LDP or wiring.

@@nzdiagnostics4991 I tested the valve out of the car and it works both is a tight seal and substantial air flow when powered. Incidentally when I took the valve out to check it and reinstalled it I must have turned the key on while the valve was still out, because the next time I got into the van to drive the MIL was on, I checked the code and it was an LDP circuit error. That tells me the wiring is fine.

my 2004 Dodge Caravan has the older NVLD piece (not this smaller white ESIM). The NVLD was changed and the P0441 disappeared, but the P0440 came back . Initially had both P0440 and P0441, changed the gas cap and the P0440 went away but P0441 remained. Then changed the NVLD and the P0441 went away but the P0440 came back. Smoke test showed no leaks. Also changed the Purge Solenoid initially but that had no effect at all on the 2 codes. Weird, any explanation?

Make sure you don't a charcoal Canister coming apart where the charcoal pellets are causing a restriction.

i have been chasing a po455 in my 02 caravan. Replaced 3 hoses and replaced broken clamps,and replaced vent valve and still have a problem. Next is purge valve. i don't see the item you are talking about thou. any suggestions?

An 2002 Caravan doesn't have the device he's holding in his hand. An 02 uses a Leak Detection Pump (LDP) while the newer ones use an Evap System Integrity Monitor (ESIM). There is a lot of confusion about these two different components and what they do and what they are called. If you haven't fixed your vehicle after replacing everything you mentioned you might have a bad LDP. Its located underneath the van where the driver's seat is located.

Set your multimeter to either check for continuity or to measure resistance. Choose both your meter leads to have alligator clips. Clamp the leads to one another to confirm the meter's behaviour in the short circuit condition. If it's set to continuity, the meter should make a noise. If the meter is set to measure resistance, the screen should read 0ohms or a fraction of an ohm. Separating the leads to produce an open circuit condition should cause your meter to display 0.L (infinite resistance). Now connect each alligator clip to the leads on the "pump." the short circuit condition should appear when you either blow on one end or suck on the other to introduce a pressure difference and supposedly close the switch. That is, applying the pressure differential will short together the two pins you clamped your alligator clips to, if the "pump" is not defective. I am not a mechanic. I don't know why this pressure switch is being referred to as a pump. Hope this helps.

Also, be careful that your leads aren't touching one another inside the connector when you clamp them to the pins. This will introduce an unintended short circuit condition that will override the condition you're trying to test for.

2013 Dodge Dart 2.0. Stalled after filling up at the gas station. Dodge dealership is telling me Fuel Pump ($837) AND EVAP canister ($311) need to be replaced. They said there wasn’t a leak in the fuel pump. Im trying to get them to tell me why the fuel pump needs to be replaced if there is no leak and its just a dead EVAP or the solenoid is stuck open. Any ideas?

Based on your comment, I would definitely look at the Charcoal Canister Purge Valve Solenoid being stuck in the open position when not energized.

Thanks for the info! Question: I have a 08 ram 1500 5.7l automatic132k miles. I filled my gas tank full and drove 50 miles then my truck stalled & CHECK GAUGES sign came on. My fluids were topped off. No CEL. I changed my fuel pump @ 127k. Charcoal cannister still original. Bad oil pressure sensor? or the charcoal cannister and detector, vapor purge valve solenoid, or vapor canister filter. Trying to repair it so I can bring it home safely. Any information you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.

I bought a brand new Dorman ESIM and out of the box, the weights inside didn't move up or down when shaken. I've gotten different answers, some saying they're supposed to move, and others saying they are not.

hello, i KNow this video is a year old but hoping you can help me a little bit. Im getting a code on a customer's 07 commander. p0452 "ESIM stuck closed". from my understanding on a test procudure i found, the computer is supposed to comand the purge valve open for some time (up to 30 seconds) after the engine/key is shut off. at this time the ESIM is supposed to go from reading "closed" to "open". The ESIM and purge are both new, i took the canister off and shook it, no beads) he was having an issue filling it with gas (clicking off too soon) but he said that went away after we did the ESIM and purge. yet this code persists. one steop on the test i did said to take the purge hose off the canister while watching the ESIM signal and see if it changed from closed to open after pulling the purge hose off, it DID! it then told me to suspect the purge or purge lines to be the culpret. So far the lines seem good because i did the same thing but up at the purge instead of at the canister and it changed from closed to open so i dont think the lines are clogged. the control wires for the purge are good all the way to the PCM also and the connections seem good. upon checking the system again with everything hooked up it seemed to be working. would be closed while running and after shutting it off and turning key on again after 1 minute it would read open. then aafter a few times it stopped closing while running. im starting to think i have a bad purge valve and its not opening when its supposed to either while running (to create the vaccuum to close the ESIM) or open after shut off to release the pressure of the ESIM intermittently. It seems to be holding pressure but does not "click" like im used to purge valves doing. it did seem to be working when i comanded it on last time the car was here though. car is gone now because the customer got antsy and wanted to leave. but he will be coming back another time.

What brand was the ESIM? When purge valve is on ( flowing ) the ESIM should rear Closed via scan tool data.

is there a way to bypass this with a jumper to the connector to make the ecu to think it working fine? Bypassing it all together?

I'm trying to figure out the same thing. I don't think it would work because the ecm expects the valve to close as the fuel cools and not be closed at all times. I'd imagine you'd get a code for a large clog. If you try it and it works, let me know!

Question: ignition on you have 12volt to one of the pins, an the others ground. its a switch isnt it. Its not a solenoid???

The one on my nitro is not like yours. They look the same, however the connector is on the opposite side so the the vent is on top.

Changed mine and gas cap on my 2018 ram 1500 hemi and still here a whistle when ad gas to tank and have a check engine light with small evap leak cant figure it out

Mr. Whistler: Have you replaced your PCV Valve lately? That can be a symptom--the whistling noise, when it's on its way out. Good Luck & keep whistling while you work (but don't let your truck join in!)

@@txgaspimp9321 IDR you were talking about your gas tank. My PVC IS UNDER THE HOOD. Easy access right between the engine and transmission. Easy swap out. 5-10 minute job, costs under$10 to replace. Maybe you have something else going on. 🤷‍♀️

Do you ever have them test good yet they're bad? This is my second in a row now that tests fine and I bet its this thing since no smoke leaks and purge works on the smoke meter. I test them via continuity across the 2 pins since I dont have a probe...

Hello, I tested a new one, and it has continuity when I do your video procedure, but I noticed weights dont move up or down when I tested, also they dont move freely when rotate the Part. This means Part is bad right? Looks like valves are stucked. And when I installed on Car makes a huge noise. Thanks for your feedback in advance.

I would suggest performing a EVAP smoke leak test if you have the equipment.

I'm in the same situation with my PT Cruiser. Have replaced ENTIRE EMISSIONS SYSTEM but the Catalytic Converter and Canister--excepting for one cheap accessory and that's next: There's an electrical terminal assembly (3 wires) that hooks into the EVAP leak detection pump that costs about $30 aftermarket. On my Cruiser forum a lot of the folks claim that they discover during an EVAP repair with the 440/441 series of DTCs they find that there was never really anything wrong with the pump in the first place. (After removal the old pumps passed smoke test!) It was a corroded wire all along. It's on the bottom of the car near the gas tank and exposed to the elements so makes sense, right? (Not bad for a girl, huh?) I'll check back if this repair FINALLY takes the cursed engine light off.

Another light came up and it's saying that it's the purge valve maybe try that. Another video also said gas pump if you hear a whining noise inside the car. Either way never buying chrysler, dodge, jeep, nor ram cars 💀

Most vehicles will need the codes cleared with scan-tool. Eventually it would probably go off.

Just disconnect the battery for 2 minutes. The code will clear.

That device is not a Leak Detection Pump (LDP). Its a EVAP System Integrity Monitor (ESIM). They are not the same thing. Older Dodge Caravans used a LDP but the newer ones use an ESIM. There is a lot of confusion in the auto parts world about exactly what this component is called. An LDP uses engine vacuum to cycle a diaphragm to pump up the system to test it for leaks. A system that has an ESIM uses the normal pressure variations created in the gas tank when the fuel vaporizes and condenses to test the system so no pump is required.

I know it's a ESIM, but in the field the EISM is also referred to as leak detection pump. This is exactly the reason why I stated it's an ESIM but referred to as LDP. When you order this part you will search for LDP to find it. ESIM determines if a leak is present. I get it, it's not a pump. Same applies with O2 sensors & Air/Fuel Sensors, majority call them O2 sensors. Hopefully you know how to test it know at least 🤣
