I've had 3 BXs - one of them a 16 RS from 1987-2015. I kept it as a "joy car" to occasionally enjoy the true flying carpet feeling, as modern suspensions got harder and harder 😄 The hydropneumatic suspension was initially launched in the DS, showing that you could drive on only 3 wheels - I discovered how useful and lifesaving this construction was once I had a puncture on a front wheel while driving 160 km/h. I just felt a little vibration in the steering wheel and wondered, because the tarmac was new and smooth. I stopped and then discovered that I'd been going for so long, that the tire had left the rim altogether! I very much doubt that the car had stayed on the road, had it been any other make. Thanks to the hydropneumatic, it only took a couple of minutes to change the wheel and be off again. All 3 BXs were totally reliable and a joy to drive.
@kh237972 жыл бұрын
@Dano ... That universal fashion for ever harder suspension overlooked Citroën's hydropneumatics, where minimum body roll and stability still allowed a smooth, comfy ride. Rolls adopted it, but it stopped there. The craze for illusory sportiness ignored reality-most Brits toddle around potholed, choc-a-bloc roads bristling with speed cameras and emergency road works.

The black fabric seats gripped like rally seats and the space age interior all in black looked fantastic. The engine was as good as any engine of today. Very high torque to BHP so pulled like a train. MPG as I remember was OK. Not sure if it was computerised EFI but it seemed very refined. I love me some Bertone designs. They've done no wrong in all their years.

I had an 8v GTI, once I tweaked it a bit by having it's stance lean very slightly forward, and carved my own notch in the height selector lever for slightly lower than the normal ride, the handling was excellent! A slackening off of the power steering would have given it better road-fell, but other than those minor tweaks, it was a brilliant car. I got a Xantia Activa 2lt turbo later, it had a button that did my height adjustment tweak, but was heavier, and I doubt any quicker.. Although that active suspension did make it a real surpriser for quicker cars, the cornering was awesome!

Love the BX! I bought one in the mid 2000s for £75. TZD Turbo - just a banger to get me to work but I'd definitely have a other. Considering buying a use one in France and having a LHD with imitation French plates on it.

You better hurry because nice examples are getting rare and collectible. They are indeed nice cars, i had a gold metallic TRD with a brown interior. So very early 1980's!

My Grandad drove a white 1987 BX 19RD hatchback throughout much of the nineties... Shared many a road trip with my Grandparents in that one. - Lovely memories.

Great video as always. Love the break bumpers - I think you've finally hit on a way to make ad breaks acceptable in the internet age - definitely a psychological thing that makes them more bearable. I know they did it on the telly originally, but it actually translates well you KZbin and I've not seen anyone else do it. Bonus points if you add a cue mark on the top right corner... 100% nostalgia that way!

My dad was (and is!) a huge Citroen fanboi, and we had a CX, then later a BX when I was a kid. I always loved the "magic" suspension that made the car rise up and float when you started up. We lived on the Isle of Wight at the time and to me it felt hovercraft we used to go over to Portsmouth :) We had a road-hovercraft!

Great video. They were good cars - clever use of composites to lower weight and improve performance /economy (modern cars take note!) - and that great suspension system. A cut above much of what was around at the time. The non GTI models were soft but there was nothing wrong with their handling for what was a family car after all. On a wet poorly surfaced country road in the dark I think they'd be more secure (albeit rolling more) than a Sierra / Cavalier thanks to FWD / that suspension

Know a dude who's had a BX 19 RD from new and still drives it daily. They were a fantastic car. The 16v was special (I own a 405 Mi16, its sister car)

Great story, but I never really loved the styling of the BX. It was always a cross between "real" Citroen cars and Lada Samara to me.

Had a BX 16RS in 1984 and a 19TRS Break in 1988 and would have another like a shot. Currently on my second C3 Picasso, both of which got me the ton on the autobahn.

In 1990 I drove around the M25 for the first time from the M4 to Dartford, my overriding memory is the speed of turbo diesel Citroën BXs in the outside lane. The only diesel I had driven at that point was a Landrover!

I used to drive my dads 1.9 turbo diesel, loved the suspension (I loaded the car with about 600kg and the suspension levelled then drove like it was empty :) ). Tonnes of torque from the big engine, it pulled like a train :).

I had a BX and loved it. Ride quality was sublime, lovely interior and that single sweeping wiper. Many modern cars ride like a horse and cart, it may be a fashion thing, but I hate it. Using plastic body panels is such a good idea. Ironically I now drive a BMW i3 - all plastic panels.

This is great. Very thorough, as usual. Never cared much for the BX. It was nice, but my father had a GS Pallas break, so I knew my side. Now I can tell the modern cars from the quirky, air-cooled, boxer engine, onboard disc brakes, Citroen-y old stuff. This is my favorite channel. Thank you, sir! Hat's off!!

I went to look at a BX once (late 80s). The body looked immaculate, smart and modern. Underneath it was rotten as a pear. Walked away - quickly!

My Auntie Penny had a red ‘92 Citroën BX back in the day. I believe it was the 16 TXS (or possibly the 16 TXI) with the optional rear spoiler. To the four-/five-year-old-me, it just looked so cool because it was so unlike anything else on the road, both inside and out. Good times! Good, good times!

Excellent! Brightened up my day. My folks bought a BX TDI in 1991. The only brand new car they ever bought. It came from Senior's in Wakefield and came with an inflatable dingy. Anyone else get free watercraft with their Citroen?
