Five years later and over 6000 templates sold, starting a Squarespace Template Shop transformed my life with passive income, free time, and way less client stress. This is great content!! So glad I found you since I’ve been wanting to start an online design business myself for years now, Would you consider selling website templates pretty passive besides the things you called out at the end of this video? I know that there’s a process to transfer the templates to the client that has to be done manually per other videos I’ve seen and can become a lot if you sell a ton? Is there an automation for that process nowadays or it still needs to be done manually? besides that seems like it would be mostly passive which is amazing!

Hey! Thanks for the message. Yes, it's pretty passive, though you do have to put in a bit of effort into marketing to actually make sales :) Otherwise, the actual process of transferring the templates (while still quite manual) is pretty quick and easy, and easy to outsource if you want to just hire someone to do that part!

Thanks for a great video! Have you ever sold your Squarespace templates on Etsy? Did you find any success with this platform?

I haven't! But I know a few people who have successfully. I like to teach people to build their own brands first and foremost, and to use Etsy and other Creative Marketplaces as extra. I worry about putting all of your eggs in one basket (plus the fees kinda suck too!) but I know it's possible, just not something I've done!

Thanks for sharing your story! How many templates do you recommend having before opening your shop if 6 was too many to begin with? Also, how often do you list new website templates? And how many are listed in a day or week or what timeframe did you feel has been necessary?

Hey! I don't think there's any RIGHT answer to any of these questions. I started with 6, but I don't want people to think they need to start with 6. I think you could even start with 1 and that's totally fine! I would rather people start with 1 and get something up, rather than waiting until they have the *perfect* number. The frequency of us launching new templates actually is all over the place, at one point we were doing 1 a month, last year I think we did 2, this year so far, none! Once you have a few options for sale, it's less important to release new ones. Also I think there's such thing as having TOO many, you don't want your audience to have to decide between too many. So if you're inspired and you see room for a new template in your shop then go for it whenever/however you want, otherwise just make sure you have at least 1 really solid template. No "necessary" timeline!

Does it cost a lot to do this? Squarespace requires you to have a subscription per website you create so as much as I love the idea of creating website templates I'm not sure its a good idea? Or is this what site demo's are for to avoid paying for extra subscriptions as it won't actually be a live website? Sorry I might be dumb I would hugely appreciate if you reply to this :)
