This seems a fairly well designed product with quite a lot of deja-vu in the electronics. I've looked at a number of other fridge ozone units in the past with very similar circuitry.
I'd guess the reason the fan and high voltage module are on separate transistors is to allow fan over-run or cycling of the ozone to regulate the output.
The physical design and construction of this unit is stylish and fairly sensible. It's unusual that the ozone generating plate has the active area facing away from the fan, but I'd guess air turbulence makes up for that. It certainly smells strongly of ozone in use.
Aside from use in fridges and food cupboards, the unit is also good for small rooms and wardrobes for combatting musty smells.

I'm particularly impressed by two things; the use of connectors for the off-board components (better than the iffy soldering I had expected) and the arrangement to prevent busting out the USB connector by over-enthusiastic plugging in. It does indeed look very Japanese in those respects. Kind of reminds me of the evolution in Japanese export products from early post WWII "Japanese junk" to "we want to own this market and will stop at nothing quality-wise". If only this kind of thinking would extend to all Chinese exports, putting to rest the phrase "Chinesium".

Those early post-war Japanese companies were pretty much just garage businesses. When they became bigger (and ran MASSIVE industrial espionage networks in the US, USSR, UK etc-etc.) they moved from cloning and producing cheap garbage to developing and producing their own high quality high tech stuff. Then it was Korea. Samsung and LG (then separate companies Lucky and Goldstar) were considered meh when it comes to quality of their products. Now they are top brands. And Xiaomi making home appliances for years, then they expanded to electronics and basically stormed mobile phone market. It's a huge corporation. So quality isn't a big surprise.

So glad you got your hands on one of these. I bought the same one and immediately bought the other two colors -- loved it. (Note the white one has a pink top.) Good to know how it comes apart should the battery need replacing. Having run these for a couple months, their estimated battery life is low. I've got an entire month out of one in "green" mode in my fridge before it signaled low battery. This is consistent across all three units. Glad to see it's as well-built as it looks. Thanks! 👍

About Xiaomi products: Xiaomi has lots of products, and has an order of more to less control by them: 1. Products made by Xiaomi 100% like routers and smartphones 2. Products made by other companies sold with the xiaomi/mijia brand. Like mi bands (huami) or scooters (ninebot). Xiaomi usually has a lot of investment and control of these companies. 3. Brands that only sell products on youpin (xiaomi's electronic marketplace in china). Maybe they have quality controls from Xiaomi, but their products are not Xiaomi. The resellers in shops like Aliexpress always call these products 'Xiaomi' because probably it helps to sell more. You can find in this category lots and lots of brands/products, even some western companies like philips sell in youpin. In this case I think it's a product from the 3rd category, and maybe this is the reason you have seen it with the Xiaomi name in the product title.

It is my understanding that Xiaomi runs a successful retail chain, Xiaomi Youpin, and they offer partner brand products there, which are not Xiaomi products per se, but are co-marketed by them and tend to have a very IKEA-like styling to them, which is somewhat consistent among the brands, maybe not so much in the specific details, but the overall school of design. They try to limit the products to one per category, so there's only one brand of shavers or vacuum cleaners, and only a handful of models for each brand with clear differentiation, such as to give you vaguely what you need, but not burden you with actually having to make a choice, and it's supposed to be a hassle- and worry-free experience, that nothing they offer is going to be outright garbage. How well does Li-Ion perform in a fridge, which can get down to maybe 5°C? Is NiMH better or worse in this use? Maybe NiCd is more ideal? Then again i'm not sure how legal that would be still... How well does one expect this assembly to stand up to a humid environment?
@NinoJoel
@NinoJoel 2 жыл бұрын
I would not be worried about the lithium cell since the circuit draws next to nothing so the weaker output of the cold cell will not be a problem. As for moisture..... I'd guess it will not care as long as it does not condensate on the PCB. Then again there should not be moisture in a fridge anyway
@SianaGearz
@SianaGearz 2 жыл бұрын
@@NinoJoel Mhm how can there not be moisture in a fridge? Ice condensates on the back wall of a fridge, just a barely visible layer and is occasionally evaporated off by the defrost logic of the fridge, which occasionally kicks the back wall into heater mode once every couple days i think. You lock some room-temperature air with normal humidity in the fridge, the temperature in the fridge is usually well below the dew point, so it will condensate on everything.
@NinoJoel
@NinoJoel 2 жыл бұрын
@@SianaGearz yes but there is not much moisture in a fridge. It will condesate due to a large heat difference. Since the Ozon generator will stay inside for the most time it does not have a temperature difference to the fridge that is large enough to condesate anything.

A nice idea, ozone kills bacteria and is also widely used in water treatment. The downside is that the "free" ozone reacts quickly with metals and etched them depending on the concentration. So I wonder how it reacts with aluminum foils or the wiring in the fridge chamber. Also older fridges have not foamed in evaporators or ice cabinets.

Ozone occurs in natural outdoor air. It's only bad when it is at very high concentrations.
@sheeplehunter9651
@sheeplehunter9651 2 жыл бұрын
@@bigclivedotcom You are ignorant to the facts. Just because something is natural in our air doesn't mean it isn't toxic. Carbon Monoxide and different Nitric Oxides occur at ground level ( the Troposphere) at much higher rates than ozone and are very toxic, but not as toxic as ozone. Ozone is the main component of smog and is dangerous to health and the environment, it is very toxic. The vast majority of ground-level ozone, not to be confused with the upper atmosphere's protective ozone layer, is created by reactions between environmental pollutants, light, and heat. It is only produced "naturally" at ground level when lightning strikes, and that only makes up a small portion of tropospheric ozone. Your statement that "It's only bad when it is at very high concentrations," doesn't provide any proof that you even know what constitutes a high concentration, because the safe limit recommended is as low as between 0.070 parts per million (EPA recommendation) and 0.10 parts per million (OSHA recommendation) for no longer than 8 hours. According to the EPA, "Adverse health effects from ozone are more likely to occur when ozone levels exceed the EPA standard, but are possible when ozone levels are below the standard, especially in sensitive populations." That means at most one part of the air per 10 million parts is considered the most anyone should be exposed to over an 8 hour period and as I previously mentioned, people can experience health problems at lower levels if they have any form of asthma, if they are children due to weaker longs than adults, or if they are elderly. I wouldn't consider only one part per 10 million to be a "very high concentration" relative to most things, so your answer is an ignorant dismissal of legitimate problems. Most products that have been tested usually produce much higher levels than what is found to be safe, and it's even more dangerous when used in enclosed spaces like a fridge. Also, Chinese products aren't going to care at all about being in compliance with OSHA or EPA guidelines. The EPA also has shown that ozone can eliminate odors, but the catch is that zero studies have been able to do so without exceeding toxic levels, and they also found that they are not effective at preventing things like mold/bacteria and or eliminating air contaminants at safe levels. As a result of reviewing research available to this date, EPA, as well as researchers from universities like UCLA, strongly discourage the in home use of any type of ozone generator.
