That's really nifty :) I can think of all kinds of crafty ways to use those disks in artsy lighting installations in restrooms and other public spaces, where you would suspend a larger glass or translucent material like acrylic and a smattering of those "pucks", and then the wiring for them would snake back to the hanging points, and the driving circuitry would be out of site. It would provide an interesting feature of light in a very thin package that would splash down AND up, and if the little pucks were sealed into the material, it would be about as safe as any other fluorescent lamp. I could also see these used as like oversized "pixels" or a very large dot matrix display (think freeway information signs or traffic control units with the big amber arrows).

@letrions8 жыл бұрын
bigclivedotcom it made me chuckle as the way you produce videos is all about the content, so the 'special effects' and you gesturing to the areas for the links created a humourous dissonance. to clarify: I enjoyed it. do what you need to do to satisfy the overlords, I would encourage whatever approach gives you time to focus on what you (and by extension, we) love.

Of course there is the other third, special, secret, option ... which is to ignore whatever current marketing wank youtube sends to hard-working creators and just make nice videos without all this latest annotation nonsense cluttering up the end. They used to tell you guys people preferred short videos (when they were trying to sell more ads), then they told you people wanted longer videos (when they were trying to become subscription model), now they tell you to put their useless suggestion algorithm at the end because they want to steer audiences to what they think we want (have you looked at the shit in trending?) If I was you I'd just tell them to bugger off. Just concentrate on the lovely high quality videos.

OWWW. That cut on the end of your thumb looks like the absolute ultimate rule breaking of "dont pry using a screwdriver with it pointed at your fingers". I do more mechanical (car or small engine repair) work than I do electrical work, so prying things with a pry bar or screwdriver is fairly common when reconditioning parts, and I've learned the hard way not to pry TOWARDS my fingers when holding something: even a dull blade can go in deep if you're prying hard enough.

Hunch from a former manufacturing engineer - I suspect the raised phosphor lines on the front are so the same die can be used to print the front and back glasses, and allow for the power lines to the pads. Hard to tell for sure without opening one, but it would make sense on a commodity item to reduce the amount of printing and inventory by making two identical layers

Aliexpress has a few of them, Alibaba is quite flooded. I've bought a few of these bulbs from an Italian retailer on eBay, with power ratings of 6-8-10W. The model Clive tore apart is the 10W model, 8 and 6W are very similar and a lot cheaper. I got a failed lamp with a broken wire between led and board, and went straight into take apart mode... The dome is quite well glued and doesn't want to come off easily, but once that's done, if you cut between plastic and glass with a scalpel, the glass disk will come out easily enough. That bulb has now been assembled back again and works well. For 3.5€, I cannot say those bulbs are half bad. As others mentioned, the magic word to search for these is "mcob".

@jusb10668 жыл бұрын
yes the trend for led lamps is doing away with the univeral fitting and the entire lamp will be a unit, look at say the round led bathroom IP lamps, on the outside its the same as the cfl design but inside the leds are part of it. they can be made more compact and in some more unusual designs if they dont have to think about backward compatability, plus easier to fit universal drivers so the entire world can have one production run

That was very interesting, and having seen the other "new generation" of LED lamps video, I can see this 'newer' version with its laminated design addresses one of my comments on the previous lamp, which is the mitigation of uv artefacts. With glass on both sides of the active elements, uv light is effectively blocked, so no stray artefacts to damage the plastic shell, nor to harm us, or anyone/anything else. I am wondering just where the development of LED lighting will eventually lead us. Incandescent lamps have been virtually unchanged since the first tungsten filaments, so that's over 100 years. We had a brief flirtation with CFL for about a decade or so, and saw very little change during their lifetime, and now LED lamps, which conversely, have gone in leaps and bounds, with a plethora of different approaches, types and variations on a theme, but will we ever see large scale single light emitting elements that can output similar lumen values to those from either, say, 100W tungten, or 10W (assumed) LED array? Or are we heading towards something like an electro-luminescent fluid filled tube/bulb (OLED, maybe?). Where will the quest take us?
@bluephreakr8 жыл бұрын
had you tried stuffing the driver and panel in a DIY enclosure? Seems like you can salvage the light itself since it works, just shove the glass into it and save the other light stuff for your parts bin.

Looking back on the glass sandwich lamp from 2019/20, the square-glass LED layout, and the filament-style one I have to wonder what the hell they were on that week to think up the sandwich and what they started out on with the square one before that. It can't have been that cheap or easy to make for a start and for a second bit it can't have conducted 9-10w of heat that well either no matter how much air you gave it. They must have figured leave the larger sized bulbs to the COB panels glued/compounded down to air/edge-casing/full heatsink (depending on quality of lamp maker) and put the filaments into bulbs that it both look nicer in and fit better like candelabra-sized ones (though power miniaturization of it couldn't have been easy unless they did a 3-pin buck regulator or similar). Really weird transition time for LED bulbs for sure.

I think I can shed some light on how the chip actually works. The data sheet's drawing is a bit misleading. Notice that the chip lives with its "ground" at the top end of the current sense resistor. Notice that the Vcc capacitor goes to the lower end of the current sense. When the MOSFET is on, the Drain connection is shorted to the CS connection by it. This means they can't be charging the Vcc capacitor when the MOSFET is on. Also since the capacitor goes to the bottom side of the current sense resistor, the voltage the chip sees as Vcc will ramp down as the current ramps up. Thus by watching the Vcc, they get a good signal to use for when to switch off the MOSFET. When the MOSFET is off, they charge up the Vcc capacitor to some regulated voltage. They may have gotten clever and do this with a delay so that the regulator making Vcc is still off while the voltage is Mains+75V and it only charges when the energy is out of the inductor. I base this on a "if I was doing it" line of reasoning and the fact there are only 3 pins.
