I actually like the cheap multi-led versions for use at work when crawling about under desks or behind rack gear. I scratch up the front of the "first set" of LED's with a file so they're diffused. You lose a bit of light power since it's diffused but soft wide light is great for most things I do at arm's length. The higher settings I leave alone so they stay as a beam. I think it also increases safety as well since I'm able to see more around me without being blinded by the beam.
@michaelthibault79305 жыл бұрын
Fiberglas brush run around the outside of the lens. Depending, the angle of the cone described by the pen body's path can vary the gradient of the fall-off. An alternative approach: soften the central section by placing, temporarily, a punch-hole reinforcement (think: sticky paper annulus) on the lens to constraint the abrasion to a neat circle.
@michaelthibault79305 жыл бұрын
Fresnel-izing would do it, too. Maybe there's a place (market) for a screen-protector-like range of beam customizing 'contact lenses'. Or, the manufacturers could supply the light with a fitted, removable skin. A little experimentation with clear silicone and a fresnel magnifier card is called for…

I recently modified my old LED headtorch to lithium cells and a new 1W LED (it used an early generation one, not very bright and was that "gaslamp white"), the battery box was trashed by leaky AA cells, so I cleaned all the rusted contact remains out, shoved in a pair of Nokia BL-5C cells wired in parallel connected to a TP4056 USB charger PCB, and replaced the cable from battery box to lamp (the old stuff started disintegrating as I worked on it), and hey presto, a revived and modernised LED headtorch that I bought 12-14 years ago from Lidl... :D

Different branding ("LE") silkscreened on the band, and mine has a pair of red LEDs instead of the IR pair, making it better for stealthiness in the woods. Got two of these torches, bought from different places. First one, despite being described the same as yours, turned out not to have the infrared on/off mode. Instead the two 5mm IR LEDs are actually standard red visible ones which toggle through off, on and flashing when you operate the second button. The main beam operates as yours does. The second one I got looks identical yet it does have the IR on/off mode. I actually find that feature is quite anoying as I sometimes get the wrong switch, in the process enabling the main light, and then do something while working which causes the beam to turn off and leave me in the pitch dark. Oh and I agree this is a really nice little head torch and lasts ages.

Cool little headlamp. I am getting a bit up there in age now, having just passed my 68th year, and my vision seems to be getting a bit foggy. My optometrist says I shall, one day need to get my cataracts removed, but the VA says not till they are much worse. So in order to see well when soldering, which I do A LOT now that you have taught me proper soldering techniques, I found a head lamp to use. I got an older unit, it has one large LED and two smaller ones, one on each side. It is powered by 18650's, a battery I have a large supply of, the result of tearing apart old laptop batteries. It works fine but I need to check my batteries, as some of them do not offer very long before they die, whilst if I find good ones, they last much longer. I have yet to discover why the hell the Chinese think everyone in America wants that damn strobe! Man drives me NUTS! I despise it and ever blasted flashlight I have purchased seems to have it, while a few have the SOS feature, I fear that an SOS would probably not be responded to any more, as most folks would think it just some idiot didn't make the last push on his flashlight. I was surprised to see that my headlamp must be designed for bicycle riding, as it has a red LED on the outside back of the battery pack which is on the back of the unit to counterbalance the headlight I guess. This sort of reminds me of the large head light my father had for the use on our farm in the '50's, it had a large tin container that clipped on your belt, held 4 D-Cell batteries, then a cord lead up to the light which was rather large with a big reflector and glass lens mounted on a tin base and an elastic band for the head. It was very bright, dad used it for night time chores around the house, and for taking care of predators that raided our hen house, he was quite good at blasting the critters with his .22 caliber target rifle. Since we had no power on the farm, the headlight was very nice indeed, we also used it for late night toilet needs, lite the way to the little brown house out back, if you know what they were, plus you could read that catalog with it till the work was done, and a page from the catalog was used to clean up.

The battery capacity is quite surprising, and I imagine the quiescent current is nominal (did you test that?), also pleasantly surprised at the size of the headstrap. This is the type of thing one might want to keep in the glove box of their car for emergencies. The glow-in-the-dark buttons is an unexpected touch that shows somebody somewhere along the line actually _thought_ about a detail like that, and they didn't toss that idea in the bin to save 1/100th of a penny.

I wired in the led directly to the 3.7 volt cells, using a piece of brass from the old flashlight as a heatsink. Have used the light a couple of times with no problems... So far... My question is this, should I have someway to limit the current going to the led? Will the setup I'm using shorten the life of the led? Would love to see you "Build the Perfect HeadLamp" someday!!! Would be fun seeing what you come up with :-) Thank you sir for all your work/fun video's !!!

I'd recommend using a resistor between the lithium cell and LED. At the fully charged 4.2V it could be pushing a lot of current through the LED. The resistor choice will depend on the power rating of the LED and how well it's cooled.

Just imagine... 🌈🌠 🤔 Someday, someone, somewhere over the rainbow, will invent the world's first DECENT LED torch that is: 1 push *ON* 1 push *OFF* Without having to cycle through: • Medium • Low • Flash • SOS • Red • Red Blink • Red Blink (fast) • *OFF* _(finally!!!)_

Better still, a means to signal that 'the circuitry associated with this button speaks long-press'. IOW, what happens if, when your light is on, you hold the button down for a half-second or more? One second? Does the light skip over the range of modes available, between the current/active mode, and jump to Off? Is this option common? Is this option particular to specific chips?

@@michaelthibault7930 Long press on, long press off and short press for modes would be perfect.

@@ferrumignis My Fenix HL55 does that (except it's short press: on) There are surprisingly many factors which can make the difference between a great headtorch, and an annoying gadget which stays in the junk drawer. The HL55 is the only one I could recommend so far. Sadly the HL60R (rechargeable version) deviated from the K.I.S.S. principle.

Ha! Ha! Ha! ... the Milwaukee led headlamp has an on off button, and a mode button... one press on, one press off. It also has an 18650 cell for a battery. (Yeah, it is a little large...) I use it every day.

Most led flashlights from the decent brands like Fenix, Nitecore, Olight, Acebeam etc. can do exactly that. Just dont expect them to be available for 5 pounds on ebay from your favourite china seller..

why do these lights even have a flicker mode? is that chip used for other things so it has that feature but it's so cheap it gets put into lights that you don't want to flicker

I had a familiar one, but it used standard AAA batteries, didn't last that long the two buttons broke off

that infrared triggering seems like it would get really annoying as it randomly turns off as you're trying to work in the dark.

Looks like XP sized led, kinda looks like Cree XP-E or some Chinese variant of it, my suggestion would be to swap it with something better like Samsung LH351D led, you will get much better beam out of it plus since the LH351D has bigger die the beam wont be so focused.

Is big Clive endorsing the burying of dead bodies with a light like this? He said "the burying of dead bodies" then followed that with "I suppose you could use it for that" so on big clives recommendation I should get this light to Bury dead bodies! Thanks for the endorsement on your advice I'll give it a go👍
