Here's a *solution to separate the battery from the casing sticky tape* : take a length of waxed tooth floss, long enough to hold tightly and pass behind the battery. Then use it like a saw pulling back and forth until you cut through the double sided tape, and the battery falls out/can be easily pulled off. No penetration, sharp objects or damage!

My favourite pile of crap head torch was a model, that we used to sell in our hobby shop. Not only it hadn't any protection for cell itself, but because protection was inside of provided charging lead, you cannot charge it and not destroy it by any other, generic charging lead. It needed 3,7 V charging voltage, and we never had spare leads for customers, that lost theyr provided one. We got rid of them when couple people returned these torches with swolen battery packs...

For the price, its a great headlamp, especially since I'm an overnight trucker. Its about 2 years old now. Google "SHL-1855 headlamp". It's the best headlamp I have ever owned, using two 18650 it has great battery life, the lamp is pivoting and bright as heck and it doesn't mind rain or snow. And the best thing is that I think it cost me about 5€ without batteries with shipping, as I don't care for cheap useless rechargeable batteries. I've been using it whole winter while taking the dog out and I think I've charged the batteries (NCR18650B) twice. The best thing about it is that when the batteries ran out of juice in middle of the forest on "high" once, the "low" setting lasted for whole 20 minutes, enough to get out from the forest without resorting to crappy cellphone lamp and stumbling around in the dark. One bad thing I can say about the headlamp is that after four months of use it wouldn't turn on again, and after a short inspection it turned out there was a cold solder on the battery compartment which was easy enough to fix. Oh and the beam could be wider if you like that sort of thing, I like it tight and focused as it's been pretty dark and muddy winter here in Finland so it does not bother me.
