Quarians in this whole arc were just so incredibly unsympathetic. Even in the original with tali and legion. The quarians know the galaxy is on fire and they use this moment, now? To retake rannoch. And then when told outright that their only plan to win is going up in smoke, but they do have a chance to retrear and live they just choose to die instead? The quarians made their choice, and in the end they made the choice to die. The geth didn't make that choice, and in almost every instance a choice got made for them. Even at this moment the geth vi/legion aren't asking shepard to help them wipe out the quarians. All they're asking is the chance to make a choice, the same chance every other sentient species in the galaxt got to make. The choice to live or die, free and as themselves. This is depressing. Like others, I will never try to get this scenario. I can think of only one thing as depressing, and that is shooting Mordin to keep him from ending the Genophage. I did that once, and it left me feeling dirty. Having to kill Wrex made it even worse. Saving Mordin and tricking Wreav was worth seeing, but I really prefer letting Mordin sacrifice himself to end a 1000 year long tragedy. Saving both the Geth and the Quarians is the best moment in the entire game. I just wish that you could reference that accomplishment to the Star Child, because you just proved that the created do not always have to kill their creators. It may take a lot of finagling and someone like Shepard to get them both through their conflict, but it can happen. In my opinion, this one accomplishment shows why this cycle is different, because this cycle has Shepard, and with Shepard at the head, anything is possible.

I used to think achieving peace was the highlight of the trilogy, but now I think that sabotaging the genophage cure and keeping Mordin alive is the true highlight. But the genophage sabotage to get both Krogan and salarian help highlights the dirty nature of realpolitik that is actually required to get disparate groups yo work for you. I think it really comes down to if you believe synthetics have souls. If they are truly people, and not just machines, then the quarians have absolutely wronged them. However, if you only view the Geth as hyper-advanced AI (machines without souls or true freedom of will and thought), then the quarians have every right to destroy them if they wish. They are the creators, after all. In the real world, I feel comfortable concluding that machines do not have souls. I can program a robot to scream, cry, laugh: all kinds of "human" reactions to stimuli. But, it's an illusion. The robot is only acting in the way that I programmed it to act. It does not have a soul, it does not have free will (except within the parameters I set), and it is absolutely my right to destroy it if I wish. Robots in the future may appear even more human-like, but it will still be a machine and nothing more. In Mass Effect's world, things don't necessarily have to play out like they would in reality. Perhaps Geth DO have souls. Perhaps, after attaining free will, the Geth are now on the level of organic people. I don't really believe so, and that largely plays into my decision to destroy the reapers and inorganic life at the end of the game. But, I can understand people believing differently because this is a video game and literally anything could be true. In my eyes, though, the quarians did nothing wrong because the Geth are their creation and they have the right to destroy them if they wish to do so.

I still remember to this day, I was in college my freshman year finishing up Mass Effect 3 (I was very behind, this was 2014) and I got to this mission, redid it twice thinking id done something wrong, then looked it up and went back to make sure I did everything correctly to get peace in ME3 itself, played the mission again, still couldn't get peace and realized I couldn't get it without going back and replaying half of ME2. At that point, I promptly turned the game off and didn't touch it again for 2 months until I mustered the will to do ME2 again properly. I absolutely refused to go with the one or the other ending because if I had to pick a side, I went with the Geth, and the fact that Tali suicides and you don't get to keep Legion regardless made the mission impossible to complete without peace.

Always go peace. But if I had to choose I would choose Quarians no doubt. At the end of the day both species (yes I agree Geth are alive) are willing to help and have good motivations, however for 300 years these quarians suffered a horrible life trying to survive the mistakes of their ancestors while the Geth killed any organic being that came close to their system for 300 years. People blame Quarians as if they are one singular shared network like the Geth, as if they don't have millions of civilians, children, babies, old people just trying to survive.

This is interesting and different because I always had legion and tali for this mission and I always managed to secure peace between the two since I try to do all the side stuff before moving onto the main missions. After I do my headcanon playthrough of the Legendary Edition I might try to do the scene where Legion isn't recruited. I usually send him in the vents during the suicide mission so it'll be weird not having him for that but seeing Tali stab the Geth VI and seeing that scene where the Quarians win will be interesting.
