A couple thoughts from someone who has ridden to Alaska (but not on one of the Super Ten's that I've owned since then). #1: Having spent a career in the mining business the words "Haul road" have no appeal to me for adventure riding BUT, I'd strongly encourage you to ride the Dempster Highway to Inuvik and the Arctic Ocean through the Yukon and NW Territories. A great motorcycle adventure road without all the mud hurling truck traffic of the "haul road". Dempster is Really, really stunning. I was going to do it this year again but then Covid... #2 With a super ten on either the Dalton or the Dempster you won't need the extra fuel cannister. Leave it at home, really. Good idea to take the extra one for water though should you camp along either road. #3, great idea to take the extra shifter lever. #4, June is the wettest month in those parts, encourage you to get a set of Oxford Rain Shield Handlebar mitts.. Best $50 you'll ever spend, fit over your bark busters.

I did the haul road in 2013 on a vstrom 1000. Did not need extra gas FYI. I’m sure one spare is lots. Enjoy your vacay! I’m doing it again in 2022.

I agree with you when it comes to the quality of Yamaha. I also have a Super Tenere 2016 ES. The SW Motech boxes are a big step up from the stock ones. My wife and I Camped off the back of this very capable bike more than a dozen times last riding season. Having the mountains in my back yard, the bike had to be set up for the bush. Running the Mitas EO-7's front and rear. A Great 50/50 tire.On more than one occasion we have found ourselves in quite a tight spot. But the Yamaha always powered us through some very technical dirt. As long as you turn off the traction control first. Not doing so has got me into some trouble. Mostly when you need to spin your way out of a problem and the engine stalls right in the middle of a puddle. lol. I live near Vancouver Canada. So if you are still planning on heading up to Alaska in 2020 let me know and maybe we can share the road. Cheers Richard.

I know you just bought the T700. Looks really interesting. That said, when you take a long trip like you are talking to Alaska it might be better to take the S10 for comfort. It is very nice to have the comfort for 95% of the trip and just slug it out on the tougher sections. Just a thought.

I have the arrow mid pipe and a Yoshi slip on on my 2013. I had it tuned and we got 94 hp at the wheel. Lots more grunt through mid rpms where you want it.

Great video, thank you. I changed from an 2006 GS to a 2017 Super Tenere. I’m interested in understanding more about your need to add the risers. Im tall and have found, after a few days, I get pain developing in the neck and tension in the back. I NEVER did with the GS. I’m wondering if this is why you did the risers and did it help? I’m 6’4”, btw. Great video again, and I look forward to watching more of your vids. Callum

Watched, but have to say this, I assume you are staying in motels, or cabins ? You'll find out that your 1200cc bike is over 2 times the bike you need. Once in BC then Yukon, top speed is 100 k = 62 mph. In Alaska , 65 mph. Everything and I mean everything outside Anchorage & Fairbanks maybe 45 mph. Top of world hwy lucky if you get 45. Haul road the same. Now if it rains ( it will) the bridges are dangerous ( wood decks) then the mud will cover you and the bike 1 to 3 inches thick. Clean asap !!!!! Don't get me wrong sir, I did it with my brother in 2012, absolutely breath taking. I will go again soon. This time on a Kawasaki x300 Versys. It is all the bike necessary. Lightness is bliss. Nice bike. I too own a Super Tenere. Have you considered changing the rear spring to a stiffer one, because of all the added weight.

What about the most important aspect of the bike, the suspension? That looks like a lot of weight on the rear what kind of spring/valving setup are you running? Light is Right!

I agree! I have adjusted preload to the max and am still a little too heavy. I do have a replacement spring for the back, and just received springs for the front. I may go for a replacement in the back to support longer trips and the gear that I will need for them. Light is what I am going for, and experience will help me decided where I can trim more!

Sitting here shaking my head....went round Europe with everything in an enduro jacket(undies,t'shirts deodorant tooth brush and paste) and a backpack for the waterproofs...Honda CBR900RR,185kg,time it was ready to leave(apart from fuel),probably around 180kg with the race can and other bits not needed,like mirrors,64mpg(4,54litre gallon) at 80mph steady! What's that around, 1/2 a tonne(500kg)?

Nice bike and I have a 2015 Super Tenere with similar mod's. You're one of the first people I've heard switching from a GS Adv to a Super Tenere. Was the GS more comfortable to ride? I've thought about switching but think I'll keep the Super Tenere. Thanks for the video.

I really liked the GS, but it broke down on me on a trip. Too expensive on repairs and scarcity of places that could work on it. Great motor in it! I prefer Yamaha overall though.

@@waltersprang What part broke down on your with the GS? I bought a '18 GS and now own both bikes. I'll be giving up one but can't decide. The shocks on the GS suck and will upgrade to a Tractive Reservoir. Doing the same on the Tenere but put a Traxxion Dynamics cartridge kit on the front end. One of the best mods I've ever done. I am curious , I have the V stream tall windshield and it is melting my 2019 tenere Dashboard. have you experience any melting on yours?

Something I did to mine after having it blow over on a trip last year was to upgrade the rear spring on the shock. The spring rate on the stock shock is too low for a loaded bike and it pretty much sat level on the side stand so I would really have to watch where I parked it. I now have the proper amount of squat in each of the settings with the new Eibach spring I bought. I had to have a custom spacer machined to use the Eibach spring as they are a bit shorter. BTW do you still have this bike or just the T-700 now?

Sorry for the delay. I did need to extend but the kit (Helibars) came with the cables needed. I did the extension because the cables were under stress when the bars were at either extreme

Nice setup Walter. Can you tell how tall you are since you said you have really enjoyed the V-stream windscreen. I'm looking for a replacement from the stock one. @@waltersprang I am just over 6' and I bought the tallest one. I still look over it and have it mounted in the lowest position. I have the option of moving it up if I wanted for real bad weather but it seems to work good for everything where it is. I put some braced on the windshield mount a guy was selling on the forums that really help strengthen the shield mount/accessory mount.

71 Subs I will be # 72 I am doing the same thing you are, bought a 2012 Super Tenere and have been aquiring all the necessary equitment to go motorcycle camping. I also purchased a Go Pro to record my trips or my death depending on what happens. Looking at your 3 car garage I can tell we are not in the same tax bracket , so I am looking forward to up staging you on a budget.

What isssue did your GSA have?

Fuel injectors clogged regularly and the back shock blew out on a long trip. Everything was pricey to repair. I loved how the bike road (i did 2 iron butts on it) and believe any adventure bike should not have those issues.

Nice bike. About the same mods as I have done on my 2016 xt1200ze. I do have the swmotech steel rack with trax adv top and side panniers and the space underneath the top track ( which is about the same as the altrider rack) I have used to put a waterproof giant loop possibles pouch www.giantloopmoto.com/product/possibles-pouch/ in it, that always contains a mini compressor,a tyre repair kit www.allroadmoto.be/en/stop-go-tubeless-repair-kit-mini-air-compressor.html and a sae2 optimate extension cord + sae2 to cigaretteplug optimate extension cord.. I'll be doing a 55000 km review on it as well as an overview in a video soon too.
