Proof positive that the old school trial and error we all suffered through, (those of us who worked at the shops back in the day I mean) usually lead to the same equipment selection. Sure we sold a lot of punch 100's and 200's, but when these things hit the scene for the same money if not less $500-$600, we couldn't get them fast enough. We sold hundreds of them. They actually lived quite a long life at 2 ohms bridged, even with bass-heads at the the helm. Great memories man! Thanks for the videos.

Man this brings back some memories!! I was rocking the 2300 and 4300 back in 1995 and LOVED them. Both of mine came directly out of an MTX demo car that was at their largest seller in Maui. The amps were custom made for the demo car and put out even more than the normal production amps. Made those MTX 7000 15" subs dance! The 4 channel drove some OZ Supermans to perfection as well. Wish I still had those amps.

I worked for Volutone in SoCal back in the late 90's, we were the west Coast distributor for Pioneer and MTX. These amps were incredibly strong and simply bulletproof! They won many an SPL challenge and were actually very good SQL amps as well. At 10% back of cost for employees, I should bought a case of these and just stored them away in a storage unit!!!

Hey Big D Thanks so much for running the actual test on this old prized jewel of an amplifier. I have been doing car audio since 84. I use to be a big Rockford Fosgate fan back in the late 80's early 90's running a single Punch 150 on two punch 12's then on the Blue Thunder 10's blue cones, Punch 75 , Punch 45, Punch 30 (The Peanut). I have this same exact MTX 2300 amplifier since 1995 with the original box and manual and packing. I have used this amp in two vehicle's since and presently own the second truck now. I have ran it hard as well and I use to live in the extremely hot desert region of SoCal in the Imperial Valley, CA. It has never failed on me and I previously have ran two 10" 4 ohm old school MTX Blue Thunder blue cones from 89 previously on the old Fosgate 150. MTX were great sounding subs I sure miss them and they finally quit on me in 97! Then I ran two 10" 4 ohm Kicker Competition subs from 1997 - 2007 and they lasted until I sold my last truck and left the two Kicker 10" subs and custom enclosure in that rig. Then I carried this 2300 over to my new 2006 Nissan Frontier crew cab now and it beat the two Digital Designs 8" DVC 4 ohm carbon fiber subs flawlessly and never ran out of steam! Got super warm but never went into thermal shutdown you could light a cigarette off it literally. Lol Now I that I semi retired my 2300 to a Digital Designs M2a (Class D) mono I am thinking of bringing the 2300 back to life since watching this video. Me and my longtime High school friend Max believe this Class AB amplifier will do a lot better job on my new single Audioque HDC D2 15" subwoofer in Frontier now. Max always told me years ago never let this go! And now I am glad I did not do it! lol. Now I am thinking of doing two MTX 2300 as soon as I can locate a second one and do a dual amp setup @ 2 ohms mono for each coil of the single AQ 15 I have. Will see what happens with the system I also have a Orion HCCA 225 and thinking doing a second amplifier on my Audioque 15". Once I get everything done the way I want it to be getting my new upgraded alternator 320 amps along with my two Odyssey batteries it should do fine on amperage. Now my second question Big D when will you do some amplifier tests on the Zed Audio made Hi Fonic's Series 7? Cupid, Pluto, Vulcan, Odin, Thor, Boltar, Zeus, Colossus, Eros, Titan, Ulyses, Isis, Juno, Jupiter, Europa, Gemini, Olympus, Aphrodite, Cyclops, Hercules, Atlas. Man that's a big request to fill but sure would be neat to see some of them in action. I know the Zeus has been tested already. It sure would make my friend Max happy because he previously owned all Hi Fonics series 7 system back in the day when they were built good he reminisces on the Aphrodite 6 ch being the best 6 channel he ever owned. Keep up the great videos Big D your the man taking us back in a time capsule of the younger years of car audio. Thank You Regards Victor Car Audio 1984 - present

Wow Vic, great comment! I always enjoy seeing the enthusiasm from those who watch my videos and recall their amps from back in the day! I'm also a big fan of the HiFonics VII amps as a buddy of mine had a Thor powering two 15's and it was crazy! He always wanted a Boltar or Zeus, but they were just too pricey. I'm hoping to have the ability to fully test a Colossus VII and VIII in the near future. Those are "holy grail" amps and being able to fully test them would be really awesome! Back to this MTX 2300...you know it was designed by the same guy who designed the Punch DSM amps right? Makes sense when you see the 200DSM vs. this amp's test.

The demo stand had a 4x20 amp running 4 12s a set of 6inch components and a pair of 6x9s - the whole shop shook and as a result we sold a ton of them. We only ever managed to blow up one of those amps by dazy chaining a load of their V80 boxes down to 1/2 ohm just for fun. The PG stand had a similar setup but you could switch the speakers and was set up for more SQ. Good times and fond memories. Keep up the good work and great videos 👍👍👍👍

I had it running 2 Alpine Type R12s which if I remember correctly were 600 watts RMS each. I think I ran it bridged and it was super stable, never got too hot but it rattled the mirrors in my house from the road! The amp blew through a set of the Alpines. The best part was that I got it for $180 because MTX was running a special where anyone who worked in a retail shop got 60% off. I ran it for about 2 years then got rid of it because I couldn’t stay inside the car with the volume over 13, I sold it for $300.

I had the smaller version when it came out in the back of my Bug. Took months to save for it. Then, proceeded to burn it up after I let it get flooded with water 😢

I picked up a pair of tower speakers a couple yrs ago from a lady and she asked if I wanted a couple amps that she was just gonna throw away if I didn't take. One was an MTX thunder 302 and a lightning audio B150.2 I couldn't handle the thought of those just getting dumped in the trash and seeing that the MTX had the made in the USA on it. I knew it was one of the good American amps, I know and love anyways I'm happy to find this channel and know that there are still guys like me out there that still love the classic car audio

I just bought my 3rd one last night. I will be running it in the old school spl challenge. the other 2 are absolutely mint. I would feel bad about destroying them.

ok that seals it, im def never going to sell my Thunder 275x or 225ho. They are really are the true "cheater amps".

Used to run a pair of 12” Fosgate Punch DVCs off one of these, but it was the MTX Black Gold 2300X. easily embarrassed my next system with 4- jl 12w3’s and 2 directed electronics 1100ds. The Fosgate DVC’s and MTX where so deep the JL’s couldn’t even get close. Took me months of Burger King paychecks to make it happen!😂🤣. Life as a kid.

I feel you man. I was working at Circuit City after school in the warehouse, having to go fetch these amps for customers while I was saving for one. Brutal envy

Incredibly enjoyable to find this.. Such a blast from the past. I had the little brother Thunder 2160 driving 2 JBL 1200GTI's 2 Ohm Mono back in the day and it was effortless. I remember them being over rated and very inexpensive.. good gawd that was something like 20-25 years ago..

+Bryan Jackson oh boy those GTI subs were SO drool! 😲
@bjackson19758 жыл бұрын
BigDWiz Gawd I wished I never sold them. I was the installer at a shop at that point that didn't sell JBL so, naturally they had to go. Frankly I believe they were some of the best subs ever made. DANG tight for a 12. ...and WHAT?!?!?! 93db sensitivity in a 12? Yeah.. *sigh*

I’m still running mint condition Pro Blue Thunder 3002 & the 504 that i bought in the 90’s and they’re amazing and still running strong. Both hand benched way beyond spec.

Had this amp back in the day running two Fosgate power series 10's in a sealed enclosure. It would bury the needle of my RadioShack SPL meter at 125db. It was the first system I had that needed a charging system upgrade. Without caps the lights would dim something fierce. This was in the sealed trunk of a T-bird. Imagine what it would have done in a hatchback.

My first good amp. Was a MTX thunder amp I bought in 2000. Was a 2 channel rated at 350x2 at 4 ohms I believe. I paid $569 at circuit city. I had it hooked up to 2 Polk audio 12” subs. Good thing I had the service plan on the subs because I blew them twice with the gain set at 40-50%. These amps were no joke!!!

thanks again Big D. I think these are the best amps MTX ever put out. These amps scared the Hell out of RF and Orion. Tones more power and allot cheaper (price wise that is) or maybe I should say tunes more power. ether way best price per watt.Built like a tank too.
@wal10 жыл бұрын
Nothing like competition to scare the other mfg's! RF and Orion built their reputation making excellent amps, it would take a lot of marketing $ to show how these amps were competitive. Plus, MTX was known more as a speaker mfg back in the 80's - mid 90's and even I had no idea at the time how special these amps were (are). Great job *****
@shanen92110 жыл бұрын
I love both RF and Orion for different reasons. But I like to think both mfg's pioneered a lot of the technology that was used later on by other mfg's. kinda like when MMATS started producing quality class d amps when no body else would touch class d.

Hahaha I had this amp in high school with 2 orion 12" XTRs in a 1993 Ford Probe gT, it was sweet as hell. My friends once convinced me to enter a system contest we drove by in Rhode Island, I didn't want to because my wiring wasn't anything special and you know every one at the contest goes all out. Anyways, long story short, I entered the contest and beat 75% of the people there and spent probably 1/3 on my system LOL That amp is GOLD!

Had this amp in my Tahoe back In the day pushing two 12W6 JL’s. Was super clean and loud as all hell. The retailer I went to knew I was trying to get the xtant 1000/1 mono block but was saving my pennies to get it. He called me up and said come down here I have an amp that will give you what you want and it will not be $1,000+. When I arrived he handed me this box, I was right in line with my boy that was running the same speakers on the Xtant 1000/1 block. Wish I never got rid of it, as I’m sure they are not easy to come by these day. However I have since had the JL 500/1 block in my builds and they are no joke. Will be looking for 2 original JL 1000/1 blocks to put into the next build.

I used to have the chrome limited edition MTX 2300. I don't remember how many MTX made but I know numbers were really low. Wisconsin only got 2 and I got the first one of the 2. It was a really nice looking/performing amp but it ran hot. It didn't matter what I did, it always ran hot. I had a great ground, great ventilation, and even built a fan into my amp rack. Wish I still had it bcuz they're still going for quite a bit. Granted it was $779 new.
