One time, I actually went to the bank and got a money order, and got the order form all filled out, and almost mailed it, before something came up and i had to use the money order. But I spent 100s of hours shopping. Those catalogs were every bit as magical, if not more so, than shopping on the internet. I always ended up getting subwoofers when the super sales would roll through town once a year. @gregkrueger331

Hey Big D, would you consider making a video that shows us the difference in low frequency response vs driver size? Like what is the lowest usable frequency a 6.5” driver can do, vs an 8” a 10” a 12” and a 15”? Would be a fascinating video! Thanks!

The smaller the driver, the more power you need to feed it to compare to a larger driver's cone area. You'll also generally need to build an enclosure that's larger than manufacturer's recommendation to get comparable sub bass response. This (among other factors) makes overexcursion more of an issue. Let's say you have one 12" driver, running at 500 watts or so. I don't know enough about the math to give specifics, but you'll have to run a good amount more power to an 8" or 6.5" with crazy x-max to get similar output. I do like 10" drivers for not announcing your arrival to everyone within a half block of your location, relatively compact, and easily outperforming smaller drivers of a similar price point.

I recently tried running eight 6.5” woofers(not subwoofers) in infinite baffle in a Toyota Corolla. These woofers were super cheap at only $8 each. I took extra care to fully seal the trunk from the cabin, which I believe helped tremendously. They were all ran off of a JP8 wired to 2 ohms. How did they sound? Well, even though they have an FS of 51 hz, they put out useable output down to 30 hz where they started dropping off, and GREATLY dropped off at 25 hz where excursion limits were very easy to hit. Overall though they sounded pretty good without taking up any trunk space. Most people thought I had a pair of 10” subs in the trunk and were shocked when I showed what it actually was!

It all depends on how low you want to go. I ran 3 DD 6.5s (500 series, not the 1506) ported under the cargo floor of my SUV on the 5th channel of a DD 5.1500, the clarity was amazing and it got pretty loud but the basshead in me wanted just a little bit more low end so I built a sealed box for 2 DD SL600 shallow 12s. Both setups are totally hidden and don't use any cargo space, you can't see them but you can hear them. Every few months I switch between the two setups, I like the thought of 6.5 subs sounding that good but I also like the thought of fitting 12s in a super small space...good luck with your build.

I removed my spare tire from my Ford Taraus to save weight back inthe day. I had 6 12" subs in the trunk. It was a beast. It was a challenge to keep the glass in that car. I had to spend a day each month going around the car and tightening fastners that would rattle lose. Winshield wipers would jump up off the windshield. had to have beefier alternators and multiple batteries. Fastforward and 1 sealed box 12" woofer in the 4Runner is nice. If I am at a gas station putting in gas and I walk away from it it sounds like a live band playing in a bar across the street no rattleing no windows flexing, no wiper blades jumping up and down. Sounds great with bass, rock, country, pop. No need for extra batteries or 240-300A alternators etc.... I did not always listen to my menotrs but I have come around to their way of thinking. Today I never try to do with 2 speakers what I can do with 1 or 2. So no 32 speaker builds with 6 12" woofers and all the associated nonsense! Learning to build a system that sounds good and has solid sound staging is just as important of a skill as learning how to max out SPL! Different skill set for sure but both are skill sets to have if you want to be able to design and build systems from car audio to home audio for any client! It is a total package and achieving the desired outcome that is a sign of true mastering!

@@Only-Memories-In-The-End Careful. There are cases where a single 15 will have more cone volume than 2 12s. I know it doesn't look that way, but... ex: A 15 with a 4" deep cone is 235.619 in^3. A 12 with a 4" deep cone is 150.796 in^3. In reality both cones won't be the same depth (you drop down to 131in^3 on the 12 if it loses 1/2" of depth) and you will likely end up with a lot more surround on 2 12s than you do on one 15. Back in the olden days, 12 vs 15 was also where voice coil sizes tended to step up, so power handling tended to step up, so Xmax tended to step up too. All of that means more air displacement. I was pretty surprised when all of that was pointed out to me many years ago. At the time the raging debate was over 2 sealed 12s or one ported 15 in roughly the same box size. Sound is subjective, but the numbers seemed to indicate an SPL equilibrium.I never had the chance to A vs. B that idea, but I was leaning pretty hard toward a single 15... it was cheaper. 😂 None of that is to say that so-and-sos whatever isn't harder than whatever. Just an interesting topic that once came up between bass nerds many years ago.

About 4' tall, extremely efficient & sounded great. I think they were called Studio Monitor Phase VIII. They each had dual woofers, a horn, & twin tweeters in a 45° offset housing. Handmade dial crossovers for mids & highs. Wish I still had them, they were damaged in a flood.

Not sure why, but I've always been fond of 10" subs - nothing smaller, nothing bigger. But your quite right, smaller subs may just be the ticket one's after in terms of size/space and output needs.
@Triplej863
@Triplej863 5 ай бұрын
Nowadays subs are subs... they all do the same thing. It's just the amount of space you have that limits the size/ quantity you wanna run. Small subs resonate at higher frequencies thus they excel at tight punchy bass. Larger you go the more they can excel at lower frequencies. Any sub can produce any bass range in a properly tuned enclosure though.
@Bassotronics
@Bassotronics 5 ай бұрын
Not to mention smaller subs need to move like crazy in order to produce the ultra low frequencies which can tend to rip apart easier and faster than bigger subs. If you want to play really low and loud without worry, bigger subwoofers will always excel. - Now, of course I’m not saying that small subwoofers cannot play very low because I know they do especially if you happen to have a large quantity of them. But that’s the thing, you need many small ones to compensate what one or two in a bigger nice built enclosure can do. Just saying.

One of the most important points you didn't mentioned is the stamped steel basket. That's SUPER important. People new into the audio industry like the looks of the cast baskets. They don't understand that those baskets ring like tuning forks and can cause SQ problems. Stamped steel doesn't resonate so, it's the best and honestly the strongest option. I hate that Savard makes their stuff in China. I wish they'd build in the US but, I get it. They have to stay competitive price wise. Regardless, they'll be in the high running for my new system.

I want to see the 10 and 12-in high output savard.. & Maybe a test with the 18"?!? The ones you were testing. W/rap written across the cap just looks cheap in my opinion. But they seem to perform well. If they had a sale or something I'd be willing to try them out... But with the six and a half it seems like everybody's in the same price range between $1 and $120. If it didn't say rap across the front I'd be willing to give it more of a chance. Thanks for bringing it to our attention Big D

It's all about air displacement. A long throw 8" can sound as good as a short throw 12". And an 8 will always sound tighter as there is less cone flex.
@FOH3663
@FOH3663 5 ай бұрын
Perceived "tightness" isn't a product of cone breakup. Cone breakup manifests in the upper range as uncontrolled peakiness in the FR. "Tightness" is impacted by system damping, inductance, and how much power can be pulsed into the load.

it depends on appliction. JBL figured this out in the 50s. In a car you can use multiple small subs without issue. We knew this a few decades ago. I never heard of Sevard but that's just one of many companies that copy JBL.

Back in the 90’s I had every Car Audio and Electronics magazine it seemed. I had some extravagant systems for the time from advertisements in magazines and research I did. I eventually added some AuraSound Bass Shakers to my systems and they added a lot of extra sensory bass that you can really feel. Had anyone used those? Maybe a review on them in addition to a system that has good frequency response to see what the hype was about. Boom!💥

As others have already mentioned, the design and construction of the enclosure is just as important as the driver that goes into it. And both require exacting science. So it comes as no surprise that an enclosure that was designed by an engineer, coupled with a small but high quality driver, could produce good results in a vehicle. Don't forget, very low frequency music is non-directional, so those reflections off the glass are not as annoying. I wonder how a prebuilt enclosure like the ones in the video would sound in my living room (12X15) powered by an old 100 watt/channel RMS Sony receiver I recently retired.

@@FOH3663 Yes, scratch built ported enclosures are much more difficult to design and build. I've never done it myself. On the other hand, I have slapped together a number of sealed enclosure speakers of various sizes with acceptable results.

Back in the 90s I had a bandpass box made by American Bass. It had both speakers behind plexiglass but instead of the sound coming from the back of the speakers on either side (Google bandpass box and that's all that you'll find), the sound came from the top center of box. That box was fantastic and I've been looking for one for about 10 years with no luck. If anyone has one or any ideas where I can get one, I'd be interested and would appreciate it!

Tried replacing 6.5" bose door subs with a pair of Gomer Pyles, did not sound good! I went ahead and built a similar box for them and I was astounded by the results, the $23 plastic basket woofers sounded like a single good budget 10 incher! I also have a box very similar to the Savard challenger, except its only dual 10's. It needs mids and woofers, thats gonna be my next project!
