BIGEYE and Yellowfin Tuna Oregon Inlet

Footage from what will likely be the best day of tuna fishing out of Oregon Inlet in 2022 (Saturday, May 21st). In addition to the usual fleet of charters filling their boxes, there were also tons of private boats fishing, ranging from big sportfishers to small center consoles. Normally when you go fish after a good report, the fishing slows down. The ocean was much calmer than it had been, and normally the fish don't bite very well when that happens. Couple that with hundreds of boats trolling back and forth over the same area, and it should have pushed the fish down and scattered them out. However, there were so many tunas that it didn't matter, the bite somehow got better. The fish cleaning stations had no room at the end of the day, and there were hundreds of tuna carcasses everywhere. This was truly something to be a part of!

Just a small tip for bleeding the fish. The artery is right on the skin and you don’t have to cut deep. When you cut deep the fish bleeds into the meat. Sometimes having the opposite desired effect.

I didn't know yellow fin tuna were green? I thought they were yellow and gray

That's because most people take pictures once they're back at the dock with dead fish that have been on ice all day!! Yellowfins are beautiful when they first come out of the water

Damn Nolan , I must say I’m impressed with your crew . Many people don’t understand how important communication is when you’re getting blitzed. You guys handle it very well and put them in the box.

We had our Yellow Fin limit at 7:40am! We left the dock at 5:03am on the Game Changer….

Went out on May 31, 2022, with my 7-year-old son. We scored 2 nice yellowfins - 62lbs and 48lbs. Was very calm. You guys were killing it. Great video!!

Not certain on the hollowcore backing size on these reels but I think most use 100-130lb braid or hollowcore. 100lb mono topshot, 100lb fluoro leader.

So that was impressive, the well oiled machine way. What was missing was mechanics, how the rigs were tied, the rigs spread, far out vs. off the stern, bait used with spreaders interspersed, how do you bleed out your catch, everything I saw went right in the box, no way. I'm old, new at this, and only have a newbie crew, with no experience and less instinct. I'd pay to crew on your vessel for a trip just to learn so I can model my vessel right. I got ten years to go, new to the midAtlantic coast, big learning curve, knowledgeable about bottom fishing in the northeast , some skills translate, most don't. I've caught bonito and such in long island sound, but tuna species is new to me. Knowledge , experience , is invaluable.
