I liked that you added a little bit of backstory about the Bigfoot monster truck. I lived right near their headquarters until they moved a few years ago so I always got to see one of their trucks on display outside of their facility all the time. Regarding this game, some of the side-scrolling parts look really fun but that overhead view seems like it was developed for a totally different game. I remember playing this when I was 8 years old at a friend's house and immediately being turned off because they threw you into a vehicular battle combat race. That's not monster truck racing!! Great review as always! I love these Manual Gaming reviews so so much! :) PS: Shift the damn gears! xD
@hungrygoriya5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I learned so much about monster trucks when reading up on Bigfoot that I thought a line or two of backstory might help to shape the landscape here, but it seems I'm the only person who had never heard of Bigfoot before. It's really neat that you have some great memories of Bigfoot when monster trucks were super popular. What a lucky guy! I'd be curious to see what a monster truck race was outside of these planned events then... or was the side-by-side championship-style stuff the true "race"? And I'd like to know where your third hand would come from for better/more accurate shifting :P I hope you'll stream this sometime so I can see how it should be done.
@sirhcman5 жыл бұрын
@@hungrygoriya Most of the time the races would pit two competitors in mirrored tracks. Jumps, car crushes, and turning are usually the main obstacles. There are straight "drag" courses as well. I felt like the game closely mirrored that real-life aspect in the side-scrolling competitions. Also, the weighted sled competitions were also a real thing. I think 300 feet was considered a "full pull" (the sled competitions were more a thing for tractor pulling though and I only ever remember seeing it with monster trucks a handful of times). I sound like I know a lot but this but I only really watched in the late 80s and early 90s when monster truck racing was coming into its own :) Regarding the shifting, I think I would have used one thumb and pivoted left and right on the D-Pad and shifted with the other. Next time I have the NES out I will load it up and we can see :P

I'm glad this game is a monster truck racer as opposed to the Big Foot monster. The game has reminiscent throwbacks to RC Pro AM though it is an entirely different game. I have been to monster truck rallys before and will continue to go to more shows. This was a nice surprise. I was expecting you to set bear traps but instead you get your bare tires trapped in dirt. Also, the 7-BIT PCM digital audio is a nice touch.

We didn't have the heads or digits to pick up the competition control scheme either LoL. Re-attempting the feat on an emulator years later (and with properly mapped keys), the gearshift and supercharger do make an important difference!! Thanks for playing this one. =)

I had the same issue when I was six. But still loved the game and thanks for making this. I'm looking at getting it again! Match the engine speed with the rolling speed of vehicle and the shifter should just glide in. Same with downshifting but you'll need a slower speed to downshift without overcooking the engine and transmission. Manual transmission is all about patience. Treat it right and maintain that practice to learn correctly. I played this game never knowing about manuals at 7 years old. Now I'm a truck driver of 20 years who loves manuals and I love the gear splitter and I don't mean low/high range..my rotator cuff doesn't like it sometimes... actually most of the time lol

Did the manual not mention anything about faults? At least I assume that's what they would call it in Bigfoot races. I've never played this game before, but I'm sure the reason you were having so many problems from the start of the side-action segments was because you were hitting the d-pad before the race started and you were being penalized for it. Those two lights on the upper right side of the screen would be the key to that if you ever went back to this game for a rematch. I thought it was funny that you were still winning some of the races after a fault when you caught on, but there's no way you're going to win the later races if you fault I'm sure.
@hungrygoriya2 жыл бұрын
I don't believe I saw anything about faults or equivalent in the manual, but I could be wrong. It felt impossible to gain momentum after the start too... I needed the NES advantage, apparently!
@thedude52952 жыл бұрын
@@hungrygoriya Hey! Yeah. I just checked gamefaqs. The person who wrote the guide doesn't specifically say "fault" either, but those two lights are the key, and you were being penalized for coming out of the gates too early. "For starters, don't head over the starting line until the light properly turns. As it does, start alternating like mad between the 'left' and 'right' buttons and hold down 'B' to use your super acceleration. After a second or so, you should be able to press 'A' to shift up and then shift up again (if you try to shift too soon, before your accelerator has reached a sufficient point, you'll just do the opposite of what you want and shift down!). If you've learned to shift properly, you'll basically burn through the course in no time flat, but make sure that you release the 'B' button as necessary when your engine is threatening to overheat." But man... does that all sound complicated for an NES game. I think they were trying to put a 4 button game into a 2 button controller. 😂

Your videos are fantastic! It’s like what I wished those “girlfriend review” videos were (which are also good, but decidedly different). Probably helps that we are the same age. (Also born in ‘86; saw you mentioned that in a comment.) Came to this video after watching the SimTower one. Had both of these as a kid and played them a ton! You are right, Bigfoot is better 2P. Got my brother/cousins to play with me a lot. I guess we just figured it out on our own for the most part? I didn’t see it in the comments, but did you ever figure out why you were getting such bad starts on the side-view segments? It’s because you were jumping the gun! You have to wait for the light to turn green. Also, your accent is very neutral, but the first time I heard you say “about” it made me smile. I was worried about commenting about this and making you self conscious... Then I realized you’re “in” on the joke when you said “sorey” in this video, ha ha.

I imagine you finished it eventually, right? I wonder how you'd fare picking it up back up again now. Games I played a lot as a kid but haven't played in years come back to me really easily. And yes, totally in on the joke about my accent... I livestream a lot so people are always chuckling about my Canadianness when it comes out. It doesn't bother me in the slightest. @xenxander4 жыл бұрын
@@hungrygoriya Exactly. This control scheme is bad. Some other NES game classics are like this, as well, where you have to hit a button or arrow key rapidly to progress. Just a gimmick to sell a turbo controller to you, but that doesn't work if the rapidness is as you noticed, in the d-pad. If you ever played "track and field' it's a lot like this.

I think u were looking at the wrong thing for Temp. Your temp was Zero the entire time. 😅 This is probably another game where it'd help to do a bit of research on before you play. Many NES games were cryptic like this as devs at the time were still experimenting & figuring out what makes a good game. I get that is kind of the point of this series of vids, and ud definitely lose the charm of that first blind gameplay experience that way, but after that it might be worth it.
