This game series really doesn't get enough credit for making people take a step back and rethink their approach. A very important life skill that a lot of games go out of their way to avoid, by making everything so obvious that players will get it right on the first try.

The fact that DS1 is so slow is counterintuitively one of the reasons why it's my favorite game in the series, if not my favorite game in general, despite me having like 300 hours on DS3 and a plan to surpass that on Elden Ring, while I only ever played one run of DS1 (and NG+/+ for 100% achievements). The game being so methodical really makes it stand out a lot from the rest of the franchise.

I'd originally given Dark Souls 3 a shot years ago, but went in with the mindset most people are initially met with that its a "real hardcore gamers game" which had me devastated after a few bosses. That was lovely. And you're right: Dark Souls should be on every RPG gamer's experience list. I'm a very casual gamer: I play on "easy" or "Casual" about 90% of the time. Watching another channel do a newbie play through" of DS3 got me to try it. I haven't finished-I got to Twin Princes and got distracted by life and other things, but even though I died a lot, I still love this game. It's a game that really rewards paying attention, thinking, trying things out, as well as just going with your gut. It's not a twitch game-most of the bosses are incredibly slow, in fact. But it's a rare chance to keep on trying new things until you find the thing that works for you and your build, your approach to the game's basic premise. No matter what the guides and the pros say, it really is a game for "playing," not just following a rote set of moves or a particular limited number of builds to "git gud". You just do. And nothing feels better than beating a boss, or discovering something new your own way.
@bigfreakinfrog Жыл бұрын
Twin Princes can be tough! When you're not busy and you're done with 3, I wanna suggest you try Dark Souls 1! It's a heck of a lot slower and strategic imo but it's my favorite of the 3.

the thing ive always enjoyed about dark souls is the massive walls you can see everywhere, like these unimaginably large structures built so long ago it's possible that no one living remembers a time without them. and all the little towns and structures you can see above and below the walls, and how they seem to just go on and on, ever flowing through each other and connecting and twisting. it makes you wonder, "What was this place like before?" Imagine the Undead Burg filled with people cheering and laughing, filled with scents and sounds from all different houses. i love these games for the intrigue of what it was like before everything went wrong, but i do wish we could see an unbroken version of the land in its hay day

The vagueness is done so well that a decade later, I'm still enjoying replaying through the first title in the series for god-knows how many times (let alone the others that've come since), and there's still a huge feeling of mystery and adventure when I do. Lots of games, in a fraction of that time, you'd end up feeling like you know everything about the game - this just stays fresh, as there's always new speculation to be had -- which also adds to why the online community is such a juggernaut too imo. It just makes you wanna think and talk about it. And that's just the story/lore!

I’ve always been an archer in these games. I will use other weapons as well not a sole archer run, but always upgrading a good bow as high as I can having max arrows on me. DS2 allowed you to stock a ridiculous amount of arrows on you so I used it heavily in that game. i think too many people are used to stories told through long cutscenes and dialogue that can be nicely summed up in wikis. Dark Souls' (and all fromsoft) stories have to be experienced. there isn't really one cannon, the cannon is whatever you made of it. if you're the legendary hero who conquered the world with his bare fists, that's cannon, if you collected every little item and held onto it for no reason, that's cannon, if you're a mass murderer who kills every NPC for no reason, that's cannon. Dark Souls' story is whatever you make it.

I just finished Elden Ring (got through it only because it offers better tools than the other fromsoft games), I tried my hands on both Dark Souls 1, 3 and BloodBorne and never got past the first areas of those other three games. My dad's 74 years old and I can tell you one simple fact, no, Dark Souls is not for everybody. It's not for people with handicaps or people that need accessibility options. It's not for old people with slower reflexes. It's not for any of the casual gamers. It's actually only for a very specific set of gamers. And no mater how you frame it, the game will not be easier for any of these people, which is why no matter HOW MUCH I love this series, I can not and do not recommend it to many of the people I know.

If Dark Souls is a skills test then I failed miserably. I think it's a test of determination and flat out refusal to give up - that's how I succeeded (eventually) and it felt good. I think pretty much anyone can complete it with the same approach, it just depends how long you can give it. It's one of my all time favourite games, maybe THE favourite and as you say I'll never forget my first run. I went on to complete DS2 the day Elden Ring dropped and then that masterpiece stole another six months of my life. As someone who once dropped dark souls because of what I heard about it to now having done a no-hit run on ds3 as well as other random challenge runs like broken sword I definitely agree that the difficulty is not at all represented properly. These games are not hard for the sake of being hard, they are hard because they require you to take a step back, slow down, and really think about what actions you take while learning all the different enemies and bosses animations, etc. It is mostly a mental game compared to a super hard reaction game like everyone says it is. Also about your friend using a bow, while I don't see it as very impactful in ds1 or ds3 compared to firebombs it can have its uses. Dark souls 2 however the bow is a very useful tool with how the enemy placement is. A lot of the difficulty in ds2 stems from the enemy placement and using a bow can almost entirely remove that if you are patient enough.

The help can be a wiki, but I'd suggest having a friend give you little tips and hints above full on spoilers. I think this tinge of help can be the whole difference between a player giving up early on. Also theres so many mechanics in the game to help you out if "getting good" isn't as feasible as people are telling you it is... Namely summons and pyromancy.

I completely agree with your take on the difficulty. It’s mind blowing how much the difficulty of these games is overhyped. It’s not what makes these games special, it’s really about the fun gameplay loop, the amazing atmosphere, detailed world and incredibly deep lore. The games are rewarding, not just hard. Ultra hard modes in games only exist for the sake of being difficult. You don’t gain anything from killing all the bosses in cuphead on S tier or completing MW2 on veteran. It’s just hard. But souls games don’t have difficulty because fromsoft cares about making games that anyone can complete and enjoy in different ways. Nothing is forced down your throat, even the most seemingly bullshit areas can be cleared by luring out enemies one by one if it’s otherwise too hard to kill them all. Different playstyles compliment different people and how they feel comfortable dealing with threats. Souls games are not sandboxes but they give you freedom in how you like to play. And while this isn’t the case 100% of the time (I think ds3 and elden ring have bosses that are so fast and aggressive that some playstyles feel objectively better than others) I still feel like overall the freedom and how any weapon is basically viable makes these games truly for everyone.

This game is not for everyone. If you have MAJOR OCD, this is far from an ideal game for someone of that nature. This game constantly pushes at you when you're already pushing along and continuously creates situations where an action (or lack thereof) of the player causes things to be locked in sidequests. Drop rates are abysmally low and getting hit is often reliant upon whether you're getting stuck on textures in tight hallways. Unreasonable is probably the word most befitting of Dark Souls. The game actively leads you to cause Solaire to go mad unless you like checking the wiki every step of the way (cause that's fun, right? Reading a wiki to play a game.) It creates trust issues and hardens the skin of its players but it NEVER makes up for that by being anymore than that without lore or taking from the world to draw your own conclusions. Also It's not a difficult game, it's made poorly.Especially the later half. It's an unfinished game. I can understand being nostalgic about it because it came out in a time where information was scarce and you really had to rely on your owj ability to overcome obstacles. Its a building sense of triumph when you reach the Kiln and link the first flame, but its not for everyone. Its not a masterpiece either. Miyazaki is a one trick pony and he makes the same game again and again... Couldnt even be bothered to do much with it when the remaster came out.
@That__Guy Жыл бұрын
Yeah, Dark Souls is hard as long as you try to play it like any other game. To me Souls games are the most immersive RPGs out there, because they are not filled with quest logs and map markers. The story isn't told by cutscenes and exposition. You see the world as it is. Just as it exists. It is a snapshot of its history and its past events. Worldbuilding in its purest form. Once you immerse yourself in this world, have patience, explore, think and strategize, you will no longer find it that hard. What would you do IRL if you were facing hellish demons? You wouldn't aimlessly swing your sword around and hope for the best. In Dark Souls you wouldn't just aimlessly button mash and think it will work. You're not brute forcing it in the hopes that the game will suddenly give way to your attempts. You will have to learn to play the game, learn how to navigate the world and its inhabitants, learn about the possibilities, not by some tutorial and more exposition, but by doing it, by living it, by trial and error, by immersion. Then suddenly the game becomes clear and true, fair and honest.

Honestly, I don't actually think everyone should play dark souls 1 specifically. It's a clunky, slow mess of a game imho. It's not a bad game, but it's not 10/10 material in my book. That being said, I do appreciate it for what it did, and what it's created. Elden Ring(my first souls game) is genuinely one of my favorites of all time. Dark Souls 3 is fantastic. Sekiro is an absolutely inspired concept. But I think too many people hype it up for both its content and its gameplay. The story is obtuse at best if you don't lore-dive, and the gameplay isn't very difficult once you figure out which of the three playstyles you're going to go with. Genuinely, I think it would be an absolute unit of a game back in 2005. However, it released in 2011. So while it's still a good game, it definitely missed the mark of what it could have been. And that's not even talking about the consequences of its rushed development.

This. Elden Ring got a lot of heat because of the lack of an easy mode and the argument was that otherwise only "hardcore gamers" could play the game, when in reality ANYONE, unless you have a real mental or physical limitation, can finish any souls game, it just takes more effort and perseverance than most people are willing to put into a videogame.

And I can understand that because, although I love the game, it is a pretty ridiculous game very often. Especially on first playthrough. No amount of preparation or caution can save you from some of the things the game trolls you with. Tough for me to imagine this game being for everyone. This game is very life like in the way it constantly messes with you and wants to see you fail. I don’t think everyone enjoys their fantasy becoming more realistic or lifelike over their fantasy just being conventionally fulfilling like most other games. 😹 It would be awesome if that were the case and everyone could love the masterpiece that is dark souls equally, but I can definitely see how many people would never take the time to get over the initial learning curve or even the lore’s initial abstractness. This game is so special imo, because it plays on your fear. Constantly. Not only does it reputation scare people away, but even inside the game, there are enemies and locations or situations that take advantage of your initial measured or scaredy-cat approaches. Dark souls is from my point of view, a type of game that only welcomes people who can overcome that constant fear, hostility, and seeming hopelessness. In other words, true gamers. 😭 Not everyone has the time, passion, or energy to even finish the game without looking almost everything up almost every step of the way. One could even argue that the game’s design took the concept of cooperative single player very seriously. It seems the creators were really into the idea of people learning to defeat the game together just by sharing their own trials and tribulations with one another instead of figuring out everything by themselves. It’s a very very different game. This may seem less true now that it has been explored a million times. But playing it now is definitely not the same experience as when it came out. Just another reason why this game is so brilliant and stands out historically from so many other videogames. I liked your video though I do share the sentiment of it being more accessible in general than people made it out to be. 😎

Good thing you kept the topic on DS1, Because Elden Ring has been such a massive hit thanks to how accesible it is, yet DS1 is also there with accessibility options. The difference being DS1 is idiot-proof, Elden Ring isn't

I got into the souls series when ds3 came out so Like 2015 and it was single handedly changed my view of games from these games where they hand out everything as a partipation. Then I got the rest of the series and got every single souls game besides demon souls I also got into the board game for darksouls for not making a physical interpretation of the games but also have minis of all characters that I love

Dark souls is a game for everyone willing to pay the price. The price being willing to be humbled and being ready to adapt. That's what git gud has always been about, despite what people meaning to use or take it as an insult would have you believe.

I love this video, but the game is definitely not for everyone... i'd advise to everyone i meet yes... but it is not for everyone.... because not everyone likes third person fantasy games. My dad and bro only like shooters. So definitely not for them. As for me, you would hard to convince to play any strategy game. Maybe some hyper-specific case, maaaybe you could convince me to play xcom, but even then, only the version where the snakes are playable.

Ever since I discovered Bloodborne, and became a disgusting FromSoft fan, I realized the thing you mentioned at about 4:25. "Prepare to Die" (aka The Thing I heard echoes in Soulsborne advertising) isn't a threat,it's about setting expectations. I am very grateful to hear others echo that sentiment (which I will foolish insist I invented when I got into Bloodborne back in 2020). Thank for evangelizing these games so eloquently. Praise the Sun, and may the Good Blood guide your way!

It can't be overstated how much of a disservice you're providing yourself when you go into one of these games any other way that completely blind with as little outside influence as possible. Getting advice on what to use, where to go, how to think. All of that is how you ruin the game for yourself and miss the real appeal of the experience. I've had the great pleasure of watching several entire blind playthroughs of Elden Ring by multiple people with varying levels of experience with From Software games, and let me tell you. Watching someone go through one of these games without ANY help will teach you more about the game than you could've ever taught them. The process of building your character from scratch with no idea what the heck you're actually doing is one of the best parts about this. Everyone finds or connects with wildly different tools and their process is going to be different than anyone else's and that shit is so beautiful. You really only appreciate these game's designs when you step back and look at it through the lens of a new player. Unparalleled gaming experience.... And then, once you roll the credits, i.e., you beat the tutorial, that's when the real fight begins. You unlock an entirely new game full of jolly co-operation and then you start learning all about the things you missed the first go around.

I have in my mind something which I call "DSP standard". If DSP can beat a game - anyone can do it. No excuses. Dark souls is for everyone.

I'm getting the impression souls fanboys don't care and they have a fixation with making everyone praise the game even if it's not a good game for someone like you or me. Communities like this are really annoying about it
@wolftales5203 Жыл бұрын
These games really do something to me and it isnt good. I love Elden Ring but the old Souls games? Nah, something about them just makes me feel grossly self-destructive. It might be the community or the "need to prove something". I wouldn't imagine it is difficutly as today I beat Vordt on my second try and yeah it felt alright, not amazing, not worth the hour long struggle through the High Wall, no bonfires near bosses, that will get tedious so i'm not even going to bother. But something between the games themselves and their self-felating fanbases just russel mai jimmies. At this point I dont know whats wrong, is it me or the series. But go and prove me right, comment skill issue because git gud is older than my sister

I understand that not everyone will enjoy it. I do want to encourage everyone to try it though since it kind of re-sparked my interest in games! I was really falling off of video games so this was a breath of fresh air and got me to try a bunch of indie games afterwards. It makes me really appreciate game directors! I'm sorry your experience felt self-destructive; it felt very cozy to me after my classes in my first year of college. I'm also glad you gave it a shot. Sorry if you've had a negative experience with Souls fans in the past as well. I hope I don't add to that.

@Frogwater why is your video titled dark souls is for everyone then? Your entire video is trying to prove that people should love it even if they aren't into it. I don't respect or like that take. Just let people not like it and be ok with it.
@bigfreakinfrog Жыл бұрын
@@SilverCinder1 I should have worded it better then. I think the game was made for everyone, or atleast a much more broad demographic than Souls elitists have placed themselves in. I don't think everyone will enjoy it but I do think it's always worth a try! My hope with the video was to get at least a few people interested in finally picking it up and making it feel a lot less scary to them.

I couldn’t agree more. Dark souls was actually what got me into video games in the first place. I literally bought a PC so I could play dark souls 😂 I think it appealed to me because /everyone/ sucks at Dark Souls at first so I wouldn’t have to feel bad for how bad I knew I was gonna be.

wow What a weird first game 😂 That must have been super interesting tho! Most people have to un-learn video game tropes but you went in fresh!

I cannot agree more about doing your own style instead of just using the meta. In dark souls 3, I didn't watch any tutorials and really liked using halberts, which I found out is one of the least used types of weapons used in pvp. However, I got invaded multiple times after beating a boss with the ember restored. I didn't lose to any of those invasions, and most of those invaders are using the meta weapons like the dual sells swords and claymore. I think I understood what my build can do and cannot do better than just looking up a guide, and in Dark Souls games this is rewarded.
