TikTok Star 'NIK' has been scamming his audience with Asset Flip games, while taking in Thousands of Dollars on Patreon. His latest game 'Greed of Man' is an RP game made of pre-made Assets that show he hasn't put any amount of time into ACTUALLY developing the game.

I'm noticing some of his fans coming over to point out that I'm an "Adult dogging on a 17 year old" - Same tactic that other scammers in the past have used. Just because your a teenager, doesn't mean you're off the hook for being a POS. Sorry. I mean, how can you even defend him when 2 months before announcing Greed of Man, he admitted that its too ambitious for him to make? Children.

The problem with scam games like this, is that actually talented indie devs who want to make something like this game WITHOUT it being a scam, are no longer trusted, and cannot secure funding for their legitimate project.

It's honestly hilarious. Dudes promise the world without even being geniuses or something like that. If at least these dudes were national news by the time they were 6, sure. Trust the guy who might change the whole system. But pretty much anyone who talks big and knows where to get community assets gets enough hype. In Brazil we have a game called "171". It's basically GTA, but in Brazil. Guess what? Years and years of Patreon money and the game is trash. Some people actually believe small/solo teams can deliver something not even the likes of Activision can. Lol. Never ceases to amaze me.

Developers like NIK makes it harder for gamers to trust us. I have a lot of ideas for potential games, but I know that I would need a big team to make them, so until I have a team with enough people I am sticking to smaller single-player games. Multiplayer games are very difficult to develop as a solo/small developer. If NIK is serious about game development, he would go and learn about game development and then go and make small games and build up to more larger games. During my time studying game design at university, we were constantly reminded about scope and how to avoid scope creep. I hope NIK can learn from this and make good games. Bigfry is amazing at calling out developers and I am looking forward to playing Transience.

sorry mate, but this nick guy is an obvious grifter, he's using free assets off of the store and flipping them in his game and calling it a game, however i guess the only thing he's actually paying for is the server, and servers cost money each month, but that could be a very cheap server only costing him a few hundred dollars making it look like he's working on the game while providing the game at early access. but i agree with you when it comes to single player games. there is an indy game i just got on a steam sale who has been developing his game for the last few years, his game is called spacebourn 2, the game is kind of a mix of star citizen and NMS, but it's starting to look like a great space game, it's early access, and for the amount of work he's been able to do just by himself is pretty damn astonishing to admit. i wouldn't know if he's a grifter since i can tell his game has some real love put into it, he's using some kind of tts program to give voices to NPC's in the game, likely because he can't afford to pay voice actors and it sounds ok sometimes not so much, but i wonder if the dev would be cool with someone giving their voice talent to the game for free, kind of like modders for skyrim, they always needed voice actors for their stuff and having a real person who sounds good with the voice lines instead of using a tts program sounds so much better, especially the tts program he's using in comparison. so i would be willing to be a volunteer on a project to support it. and the dev would download my voice files and listen to them and clean them up a bit maybe give my voice some tone to make it sound more professional or something, if it's not good enough i would do it again and fix the parts of expression and tone he needed in order for it to sound right.

What advise would you have for someone interested in getting into game dev
@mikehunt3688
@mikehunt3688 Жыл бұрын
@@ThunderRod game development honestly covers a pretty broad range of skills, from programming to UI design, and to make anything decent by today's standards you either need a really good idea that just works (art, gameplay, music, etc all just happening to come together perfectly), or you need a team of people with those different skills that can live up to today's standards. Now you can learn each part and solo it all. One of the biggest issues, I think, with games, is the speed you have to be able to create them while still maintaining relevancy. Sure, you can learn programming, ui design, music production, etc and pump out a game on the level of GTA V, but its going to take an incredibly long time and by the time you release it, our standards in gaming will have changed, and your game will no longer be as good by comparison.

Everything this dude touches turns to shit, he gets the bag, and then he runs into the sunset. He's the most famous asset flipper I've seen on TikTok...it's sad. Go for it! With the tools and resources available today, it's much easier to start creating than a decade or two ago. There's books, videos, online courses etc. Much of it is even free. As a developer myself, I would like to say that the three most important skills to have are perserverence (don't give up even when it gets tough, because you will face hard problems), attention to detail (computers need exact instructions; if a line needs to be ended with a semicolon, a colon or a comma won't cut it and it will break your game) and perhaps the most important skill --- curiosity (be willing to try new things and be prepared to fail many times). Good luck!
@oliver_twistor
@oliver_twistor Жыл бұрын
Another thing, pertinent to this video. It's very important to learn to scope one's projects properly. Ambition can often be a double-edged sword. Start small, much smaller than you think you should. That way you will be able to complete projects, and by seeing the fruits of your labour your confidence and skills will grow. It's much better to create multiple small finished games than one giant unfinished one. There's a reason why many game developers start as level designers or modders. That way they don't have to come up with a game from scratch. Another good way to start is to recreate small well-known existing games, such as Tetris, Minesweeper, Tic-tac-toe, Snake. That's how I made my first games in university. My first ever game was a recreation of the board game Reversi. It sucked and was buggy as hell. You could interject your opponents turn, flipping their pieces right after they made a move. =)

I recently downloaded Unreal and learned from youtube and in just a single week I made more stunning stuff than this individual made since 2021. Unreal is incredibly easy to work with, but again, placing assets, is not making a game, never was, never will be. I could make scenes, create beautiful lighting, oceans, everything within mere days of learning, so, seeing someone attempting to pull the wool over people's eyes like this is still quite frustrating because they're selling a lie and due to TikTok not caring about scams, or people being sucked up by such things, these people will lose their money to something they believe in which isn't right. But, again, this isn't a new thing, this is what early access has been doing for a long time, people lying more often than not that they'll produce something far better than any triple-A dev.

@@jasonanderson5034 that's not really how that works. If a price of bread in Canada is 2.50, you could buy 16 loaves of bread or this game at $40. In America, a loaf of bread is *also* 2.50, but the game is $30 so you can only buy 12 loaves of bread. While in a vacuum it may seem like the conversion is fair, in real ass life it's not. When it comes down to it, your money is getting *extra* wasted in Canada.

This especially pushes my buttons because it puts a bad wrap on student developers and takes money away from people who deserve it. Shame that people like this are the ones who get attention and funding...

I think I've never in my life seen a fully fledged game of this kind, literally every single one we've seen so far was a scam. I simply cannot understand how can people keep falling for the same trick all the time. Gmod RP servers are funnily the closest thing we have to one of these games. Hell, I absolutely adore how the guy goes "This is too much for me, it'll take tens of years to complete this game by myself" and then the next upload is "you guys want me to make a game with the entire world explorable?"

I'm a 19 yo self taught game developer/game designer and I currently lead development at an indie studio. I started out using free assets to make up for things I couldn't understand back then like coding, baring in mind I started learning game development at about 9-10 yo. The thought of somebody coming into the space and essentially trying to guilt viewers into feeling bad for going through what's literally the most average game developer experience ever to end up with 8 players for a p2p asset flipped game and yet still markets himself publicly as a developer is the silliest thing I've seen this year. If you don't spend hundreds of hours on your game it's either 5 minutes in total length, just not that great, or you didn't actually make it. This kind of asset flipped shitpile would be semi acceptable in this space if his games were free to play, but the fact he's pricing these things at 20, 30 bucks each? The fact that dude is/was 17 doesn't matter. It's not like he's 11-12 years old and still figuring things out while trying his best to improve. He's out here asking for constant funding and making pay to play games. I was 17 just about 2 years ago now, so if I took a bunch of asset packs and flipped them into a pile of shit and priced it at 100 dollars on steam I'd be all good because "they're 17"..? I think the last thing is the criticism.. It doesn't matter how old you are, as a game developer if one of your players does not like something in your game, you should expect to hear all about how bad the whole game is because of this one thing. That's standard and comes with the practice. You need quite a lot of mental resilience to be in (and stay in) game development sometimes, you will always hear the bad things that nobody wants to hear, but you have to hear and listen to them regardless, over and over. You need to invest hundreds possibly even thousands of hours into a good quality game. And as a small solo game developer you're extremely lucky if 8 people play your first or second game, even more lucky if 8 people buy your pay to play game. Most people I've spoken to myself included didn't have even 3 players play our first few games on launch. Maybe this paints a clearer picture of the average experience for people watching that may not know. I hope so.

People like Nik are making it hard for solo devs like me to gain any traction with more realistic projects, he's over-promising and under-delivering, causing a lot of gamers to prefer the scam tactics of AAA devs. With AAA scam tactics, you might not get your money's worth, but you get SOMETHING, which is more appealing than throwing money at an awesome idea you never see come to life, spoiling the appeal of an independently developed game.
