It's actually a product of floatation. The tires on the wheel loader have a higher surface area contact with the pavement. This is because when fitted with a large bucket, the material on the bucket can weigh several tons depending on what it is and the size of the loader. The small loader supports a smaller bucket so it does not need as much contact area. If you measured the weight per square inch of surface contact with the boxes installed, the little loader would be heavier. This gives the tires more traction as it wants to sink to a hard surface. The bigger machine will want to float on top of soft surfaces when it doesn't have the extra weight a bucket could hold.

Beet Juice (Molasses(Sugar) Water) is now preferred over the old method of tire loading which used Calcium Chloride (CaCl2) The CaCl2 has a very slightly lower, in solution, freezing point (-25 to -51C [-13 to -60 F]) than Beet Juice (-15 to -37C [5 to -35F]), but CaCl2 is a notoriously corrosive salt. As for weight, both Beet Juice and CaCl2 are roughly 130% the weight of water. From experience, Beet Juice is sticky if it gets on you, CaCl2 is slimy and gross. I much rather work with Beet Juice.

WHEN I had my 2 wheel drive Ford F-250 IDI diesel, it was considered unsafe and useless in the winter time because the front end was so heavy and the rear-end obviously was so lightweight, but it had a limited slip rear differential and I shoveled the entire driveway into the back of that truck. Two very important things happened. 1: the rear-end became heavier than the front and giving me more traction in the rear and with the limited slip differential it drove as well as a four-wheel drive 2: when the weather warmed up I did not have to remove 1,000 lb of sand out of the back of my truck because all the snow melted thereby emptying itself.

Advantages of beet juice are it is nontoxic and non-corrosive to wheels. It is freeze resistant down to minus 35 F. Weighs about 11.0 pounds per gallon. Like the calcium chloride choice, it is better at adding weight to your tractor than many other liquid ballast choices. The downside - it is more expensive than some other liquid ballast options.

The smaller unit is pushing only dry light snow because its not cutting to the pavement to get the wet slush and ice, therefore its riding on a layer of campactable snow giving it traction to keep pushing its lighter load, have it been pushing heavy ice and slush and riding on the pavement where its slushy and icy layer is it would spin and not push its load. Yes, wet snow is easier to plow. Dry, fluffy snow is a PITA. The issue is the driver. The 2nd driver has clear compensation issues.

I don’t disagree, but to be fair the snow was lighter and the traction was different for the smaller loader. The bigger loader was being run later in the day when it has warmed up and there was that ice/slush sheen on the asphalt which is really tough to get traction on

Komatsu loader was not using float function, you can see the operator trying to get the position of the arms correct with adjustments. Float would follow the contour of the ground. This affects weight distribution. Snow tires exist for loaders, but in my time as a mechanic, I've only seen one set up with them as a set of tires is very expensive, and it is not a simple matter of swapping them in an hour once the snow flies. Was traction control selected? What gear was the transmission in? Was the tire pressure set correctly for the job? Was calcium or other tractive effort aids used? What about counter-weight? Yes, bigger is not always better. But correct use and setup play a big role in getting the most out of equipment.

Weighted tires and an extremely low center of gravity, with a great balance of horsepower, and gearing can make an incredible little snow pushing beast ! We are using a 31hp Turbocharged all wheel drive Ventrac compact utility tractor with filled knobby ( factory ) tires, additional Versa-Loader ( factory ) weight kit, and a 72 inch blade, and 12 inch blade extensions, which gives us an 8ft. Blade, and it's a snow pushing beast ! Takes on bigger, and heavier tractors on a regular basis !

I say different conditions. If the bigger machines performed like that, you wouldn't see them all over the malls in the Northeast like we do. Sipped tires can mimic snow tire tread, beat juice is a great idea where it counts. I'd like to see a video on the same day or night. Because seeing a video of the following day or a different day and not the little one isn't exactly comparison, imo

Weight distribution and downward force on tires. Smaller MCV is nimble, less top heavy and low center of gravity, weight is distributed to the left and right axis, makes it ideal for small loads. The larger MCV has heavier tires, chassis, an even heavier plow making it both top heavy and front heavy which applies more weight on the central axis which makes it sink in snow. Iced roads are dangerous enough, the larger MCV just skids because the tremendous weight carries momentum, harder to stop. The small MCV is ideal for the multipurpose job of plowing snow and doing construction jobs for those factors alone.

The biggest difference is definitely the tires, the big one has much harder ones. That makes a huge difference in the snow, otherwise the big loader has the clearing blade on the shovel much further forward. In addition, the driver is much too hard on the gas pedal when the wheels spin, the traction is gone, it's fun but doesn't help.

As someone who has used both push boxes, you are not accounting for how good the artic box is. You don't have to put any downward pressure on it, so all the wight stays on the tractor tires.

At the end of the day if you can’t produce friction with the road surface you cannot push much of anything. The large loader will have some significant advantages when lifting and piling snow. But setting a machine up properly for the conditions is a big advantage. And 50 horsepower is nothing to complain about. Geared properly you can do a lot with that (look at old 1920s tractors and heavy equipment with 10-20 horsepower at very low RPM and high torque).

There are so many variables to change the comparison More is more man, im a minnesota native and a logger, I've been pushing snow in conditions worse than you could even imagine since I was a kid, I've never regretted having more horse power, if your really suffering traction, just to the same that you did to that small machine, to the big machine, and now you'll have the weight and power to remove that big berm you left behind because that little loader had to lift the blade to keep going
