Great review, this was actually the first 4K I watched! That 2010 Blu - gawd everything looked like waxy plastic. In this, everything is detailed and lifelike - you really feel you are in that jungle, being hunted. Surprised to see critics here - I think this release shows what the new format is capable of.

The issue with the previous release was it was primarily remastered for the 3D release. In order to do the manual conversion for 3D they had to remove the noise in order to seperate the elements. You can also see this to a lesser degree in the latest T2 release that also recieved a 3D conversion. Unfortunately current noise reduction techniques result in smoother almost waxy looking faces.

I had this in the predator trilogy blu ray pack and don't recall it being terrible. But maybe I'd notice more now lol. Grabbed this on the b2g1 deal at Target 2 weeks back (about $11) and stoked to watch it with my dad.

Just watched. Predator is one of my favorite movies> I cant even count the number of times ive seen it. The 4k release is absolutly amazing. Ive onyl seen in 1080p, so this was a massive jump for me. The jungle detail just completely changes it for me. It just seems so immersive now, like they are litterally trapped in a unending jungle that I didnt feel before. Avatar did a good job with the new 4k. But I think this is probably the best 4k transfer Ive seen. If your a predator fan, this is a 100% guarantee good buy. They just dont make movies like this anymore

I picked this up, and I’m happy with my purchase, because it only costed $16 at Best Buy. I never saw the standard Blu-ray version to compare. That said, I was Very impressed with the transfer in Most parts of the movie. Other parts looked pretty crappy though. Yes we know about film grain but this movie has Extra grain! It only happens every so often but when it does... Oh My God it’s Super grainy! It amazes me that they can take an old movie from the 50’s like Rebel Without A Cause (for example) and make it look brand new All the way through. You’d think they could do the same or better with a movie that’s 30 years newer! Overall it looks pretty good but it just doesn’t Look like 4k to me. Looks more like a really good 1080p to be honest. I have to say “Biggest 4k Upgrade Ever!” is a bit of a stretch. I’ve definitely seen better for sure

I got the Predators 4k movie pack and I love them all. But in response to the title: "BIGGEST 4K UPGRADE EVER?!?" I'm going to have to ask, have you viewed the 4k release of Blade Runner? I owned the 4k sourced 1080p HD Blu-Ray but immediately purchased the 4K when it released. It is one of my favorite 4k upgrades. Please check it out and give us your opinion.

That 2010 bluray was made for 3D so that why they dnr'd hell out of it. Also it is brighter like most blurays because its only 100 nits. But 4k is brighter because hdr.

Yeah, the whole 10min review forgot to add that 1 really important detail, that if you dont own a 4k player yet, and can only watch the 2k disc for the moment, well that bundled 2k disc is the same good old Ultimate Hunter edition, that the 70% of this review is constantly bashing.

It's worth mentioning that in 1985, Kodak changed the formula of their T-grain structure and as a result, most of the films shot on Kodak for the period of 1985-1987 were pretty grainy, especially in low-light. You'll really notice this on PREDATOR and ALIENS among others of the period. James Cameron mentioned this in his ALIENS commentary, so the grain on PREDATOR is a sign of the times.

One of my favorite 4k releases! During the final fight scene when predator takes his helmet off and you see the creatures face in glorious 4k with all the details and texture is absolutely mind blowing! Audio was very good too, no complains here... Great review!

Predator was also shot in 1.85:1, which uses top and bottom crop-matting to achieve its widescreen, which unfortunately does not use the full image area of 35mm film and magnifies the grain. Haters--learn to love the grain!

Hey Jeff! I really enjoy my 4k copy of Predator. I also thought they did a good job on the image. The HDR really helped the dark scenes. Preadator 2 4K is the one that amazed me though. The 4k version looks better than it did on the big screen when I saw it on it's original release. Predator is one of my favorite guilty pleasure movies.

Something is up with your 1080p blu-ray captures. My blu-ray copy is nowhere near this dark. We just watched it 2 weeks ago. Yes, its DNR'ed to the max. But lighting and brightness were excellent.

I have the original 2008, then the Ultimate Hunter Edition, and the 4K. The 4K isn't up to other 4K UHD quality, however, it blows the other 2 out of the water! It's the best the movie has ever looked! The 2008 was ok, but not much of an improvement over the DVD. The Ultimate Hunter Edition is straight garbage! Don't even think about buying it. The 4K is really the only way to go for Predator.

I disagree with putting the actual predator on the cover. Its great if you've already seen the movie, but I think by having Arnold on the cover and marketing, it makes you think Arnold is the predator. Its gets you thinking; how can this muscled action star be bested in any way? But also not showing the predator I think adds to the suspense of the film. Going in blind. But I guess that's hard to do when there have been plenty of other films and predator is kind of a known creature at this point.

I saw this at the movies in 1987 and bought the VHS in 1988. VHS looked like the movie. Then came laserdisc and that looked good. Now I seen this PREDATOR 4k and the grain in not bad but that's not how the movie looked in the 1980s'. If you don't own this at all then buy it but if you have the VHS or dvd don't waste your money.

I picked up the new 4K four film collection and of course the first one I popped in was the original and I was over the moon about what I saw! That excessive DNR was now gone! To have this film in such clarity, accuracy and without that DNR is a dream, I doubt it'll ever look better than it does here. Great review man, mimics my thoughts exactly.

OST was Dolby Pro Logic at best. Possibly Dolby Stereo in '87. Pro Logic was only 4 channels [L-C-R & Surround/hence the out of phase surround speakers of the day to spread out the single rear channel information]. Lots of future 5.1 mixes were based off of Pro Logic soundtracks; separating rear channel info & summing all low frequencies to the .1. Great reviews; thank you!

Minor point of disagreement but I like the original theatrical release poster more than the new cover design. It's cool if you've seen any of the movies before but if you haven't it spoils the look of the creature. In the first film there's a lot of tension that's built up before you finally get a look at him.

I got this in the UK in a box set with Predator 2 and Predators. It had all movies on 4k with the Blu-rays and digital copies. Predator in this 4k transfer is a great transfer.

What do you think was worse between the two previous blu rays? My money’s always been on the Ultimate DNR Edition. Sure the codec sucks on the 2007 blu, but it still has more grain and detail than the UHE. Great review though, I agree it’s a huge upgrade all around.

I picked up the pack that (thankfully) only had the first 3 films, even though I already owned them all on DVD but knew I had to upgrade. Predator is, in my opinion, the best action film ever made. I put the 4k disc in when I got it, just to see how nice it looked and ended up watching the whole film because I simply couldn't turn it off. It looks incredible, and so does Predator 2 and Predators.

This is normal for a new Format (for a new Technology) I'm sure that the 4k Blue Ray's will be less expensive in Time. Sometimes you get 4k Blue Ray's for 15$ (here in Germany)

@@michifilme You can get 4K movies in Italy an Spain cheap for 9-12€ (10-13$). Some of the movies have a german soundtrack... And for the price point we have to consider that these 4K are all two disk releases with the BD Version as bonus. Glad i got Predator 4K from zavvi uk for 11€. Now i can sell the useless BD, which i should never have bought...

Sometimes I see the Italian stuff on Amazon for an very good price (some blue Ray's and stuff) I have buy the Franchises Steelbok of Godzilla 2014 because it wase cheaper to buy this Version and the German Blue Ray's separate than buying the actually German version. (40€ less than the German Version). And the Version I bought looks the same that I can buy here

@@colinbooth531 predator 2 smartly knew it couldn't capture the same lightning McTiernan did years before, and like Cameron's Aliens, it swerves so effortlessly into new territory that, at least for me, the end result is a product so imaginative in tone, visuals, and action that it absolutely deserves to stand alongside the original. The opening gang shootouts, the subway chase sequence, king Willy's death, the alien ship,"want some candy?"... muah *chef's kiss*
