@@dirtycash36 In all honestly I was barely involved in them, I pop up briefly in "In Search Darkness II and In Search of Tomorrow" to tell you the plot of a film. I was told by someone on the production that the director of these "In Search of" docs didn't like "KZbinrs" and was jealous of our skills to edit, write and provide voice over so I was only used as an obligation to the producer. I tried to watch In Search of Darkness III but found it pretty much unwatchable. The "do you remember this movie" approach to these documentaries don't really appeal to me especially if you're just going to tell the audience the plot then move onto the next movie. A wasted opportunity in my opinion.

Why has he upscale this if there is a true 4K master to be utilised? This film absolutely deserves the maximum resolution. The mono track and atmos sound brilliant, why can’t we have a full new 4K

My understanding for the 'teal and orange' look was originally to increase the contrast of a movie in an otherwise limited range. But once we have HDR, that makes the tonemapping for increasing the contrast moot.

I managed to preorder the steelbook 4K disc on a misprice for £20 and thankfully the site I bought it off honoured it. It was only until watching your video I realised the original theatrical mix is in here and that for me alone makes it worth the price of this. The noise of the gunfire was always terrible since the DVD but always liked the video upgrades on every version and I have once gone out my way to make my own remux of latest BD version with mono audio with the better gunshots. Yes I’m that odd with this film, it’s my favourite film of all time. This is a great disc besides all that, as you say it would have been nice to have additional video but the previous docs have been great.

Perfect review. Thank you for putting in the hard work to compare not only the blu ray editions and the new 4K, but also with the various 35mm, laserdisc and DVD editions over the years. From your comparison shots, and after watching the new 4K, I concur with your assessment that this is likely a port over of the previous remastered Blu-ray from 2012, just with some Park Road Post AI on top. Considering that 2012 blu is apparently utilizing a 4K scan, that would explain why it didn’t look as atrocious as True Lies & Aliens, seeing as how those two almost certainly used their old respective 2K blu ray scans (even though we never got that Blu for True Lies here in the states-or across the pond either if memory serves!😅). I think that also explains why the HDR isn’t quite as deep (regarding luminance/detail in highlights/etc) as other 4K transfers from films of this era which had new 4K scans done the traditional/industry standard way. Older 4K scans usually didn’t do anything but a single “picture” per frame, or just an overexposure & underexposure shot of each frame at most, rather than multiple (generally 3 to 5) steps, so that could explain the iffy nature of the HDR here, as its source is likely an early SDR 4K scan of the negative. All just guesses here 😅 but in the end the good news is that this certainly isn’t True Lies/Aliens 4K bad, and dare I say is slightly improved over The Abyss’s 4K, and maybe about on par with The Titanic’s new 4K. Again, very thorough and entertaining review, I’m glad the KZbin Gods put your video in my feed. You’ve got a new subscriber 🫡👍📀. [edit: formatting + better wording in a couple areas]

I did have some reservations when I noticed the teal (the whole reason I skipped the bluray as I remembered a cool blue for the night / dark scenes from my nostalgia glasses and always thought that it helped set a proper tone.) It seems these days that nobody trusts the original grading and always either lean heavily into orange and/or teal. Even if you think the original minorly flawed, you'll remember it for its uniqueness. I'm worried everything is going to get washed out and homogenized in this rush to "modernize for contemporary audiences."

I think given the age of the film this is certainly the definitive way to watch it,and I think anyone wanting it to look and sound any better is really being unreasonable, because it is a big leap forward even over the blu ray, which as stated was very good. At the end of the day the only thing worth saying here, no matter what the technology used is whether this is a fantastic viewing experience overall, and it certainly is.
