Amazing. Manufacturers never consider the opinions of the folks who have to operate these things. Biggest beef I have with this design is the entry door to the cab. For many years I suffered the freezing cold from draughts of faulty door seals like doors on this loco facing the direction of travel practicly funneling in the cold. How bloody stupid. I was involved with the design of a new locomotive manufactured localy and brought this issue to the attention of the planners who then designed the unit with doors on the long end, (engine compartment facing out the side, thus completely clear of forward drafts. This idea went even further, allowing a passage way between the air intake filters, electric cabnets sepereting the cab from the engine components thus providing excellent improvement of noise control entering the cab. With the cab then being mounted on isolastic mounts and piping being seperated by rubber hose sections, vibrations from the engine and compressor compartments were considerbly decreased, thus allowing operators to operate the loco without wearing ear protection. Clearly, the designers at Caterpillar have learnt nothing of loco manufacturing. Designers need to be locked in the cab of a loco running at full throttle for a few days, I'm sure they wake up pretty quickly.

Damn. Salty much? Thats a joke. I totally agree with you. I cant imagine being in a metal box for several hours in sub zero tempatures with little to no insulation. I would think that railroads would want to keep their employees.

I love EMD locomotives even if it has the "Cat" name on it, but as a locomotive engineer myself the one thing you have to get rid of is the "Knorr" brake system on it, they are the most miserable brake to use to try to control an engine, the Westinghouse air brake is a much smoother operating brake system.
@brockkrenke791

Cat had no part in the design of this locomotive, it doesn't even use a cat engine. The sd70ace was designed and built originally by the electro motive division or EMD of general motors, the same company that makes Chevy, GMC, and Cadillac cars. GM cut out it's locomotive division, which became it's own company, Electro motive diesel (to keep the same acronym of emd) it then merged with the company named progress rail, which has ties with cat. Even the new epa tier 4 compliant locomotives aren't built by cat or don't even have a cat engine, even though the new locos have a new engine built from the ground up. So in summary, this locomotive and it's original designers have no ties with cat and the current owners of the design have loose ties with cat. And about the paint, this is the only sd70ace painted in cat yellow especially for the show

The important thing that Cat brings by owning EMD is financial muscle. EMD as an independent company couldn't compete with GE. Railroads need to know that their locomotive builder is going to be in business in the future if they are going to buy their product.

@sorindncs
@sorindncs 4 жыл бұрын
Well this is how they are called in present times but I think they should do a rebranding to this company. Mostly because EMD locomotives were known for their screaming two stroke engines, but that screaming sound, similar to that of a jet plane, belongs to a bygone era now. There is not a single locomotive in this world with a two stroke engine that can meet tier4 emissions regulations. So from now on all that we will have will be four stroke engines. SD70ACe - Tier4 is a locomotive with a four stroke engine exactly like the competitors (General Electric) locomotives. So from now on they should't be named EMD's anymore....they should be named CAT locomotives. Let people remember EMD's for their typical screaming sound. Those that don't have that beautiful sound don't deserve to be named EMD's....Newer Locomotives have next to nothing in common with those that featured two stroke engines, so newer ones should be considered CAT products...and they really should rename that company. And probably from now on they should also use CAT engines.

Actually for all those wondering, the prime mover / engine block design in this locomotive has been around since the 1980's when it was developed by General Motors and has been proven ever since. Think of this as an ex-GM design, before CAT bought out Electro-Motive.
@janetelizabeth
@janetelizabeth 6 жыл бұрын
THAT never happened! GM refused to sell to Caterpillar. OLD EMD was bought by Greenbriar
@Slim_Slid
@Slim_Slid Жыл бұрын
@janetelizabeth That's not even close to the truth. Caterpillar owns Progress Rail and is the parent company to Electro Motive Division.Electro Motive Division,even before Caterpillar was involved,is a subsidiary to Progress Rail. Take a good look at the EMD SD70ACE-T4's,the prime movers they have were improved and redesigned by Caterpillar. The Caterpillar 1010J's are what the EMD 265H's failed to become,which is what originally was in both the SD90MAC's and SD90MACH's. The 265H's singlehandedly were the worst prime movers EMD ever made,building a four stroke engine from scratch trying to be compliance with the EPA.Later on they were rebuilt by Norfolk Southern and sent elsewhere,the corrected versions of the 265H's saw usage in Asia and China,but not again in North America and Canada after the mechanical failures they had.All of that is why Union Pacific and Canadian Pacific stayed with the SD9043MAC's,which most have now been rebuilt into SD70ACU's with Norfolk Southern and Canadian Pacific. The 265H's were attempted to uphold 6,000 HP to compete with General Electric's AC6000CW's,both locomotives in the end were not very reliable or durable.With Caterpillar creating the solutions,if T4 EPA compliance wasn't a thing,they easily could've pushed out that same horsepower in the Tier Fours with the 1010J's,which have proven to be solid as can be.

I'm glad they showed how they got that loco into the building! I wonder, though, how does it "carry" freight cars? :D Interesting that they went back to a 2-stroke diesel. I'd think it'd have less power and more emissions than a 4-stroke.
@Slim_Slid
@Slim_Slid Жыл бұрын
That's because the SD70ACE's were never a product of Caterpillar...Electro Motive Division of General Motors has always been the only manufacturer to them.All of them have the 710 G3B's which are two stroke V16's with 4,300 HP.The numbering "710" confirms how many cubic inches there are in each of the cylinders.General Motors for many years was fond of building two stroke diesel,just look at Detroit Diesel. Caterpillar is the parent company to Electro Motive Division and at that owns Progress Rail which Electro Motive Division is their subsidiary. The SD70ACE-T4's are Electro Motive Division built but Caterpillar powered. The four stroke 1010J's they have are the rebuilt and corrected version of the four stroke 265H's that use to be in the SD90MAC's & SD90MACH's which were hunks of junks.Caterpillar took the 265H's and made the 1010J's,rebuilding the entire prime movers and making what Electro Motive Division failed to do.

ALWAYS!!! Low bidder get the work. Then they spit them out and throw there contracts out for bid. I have been in the Mossville Illinois engine plant and you would not believe what they do to a defective engine block and send it out the door. Can you imagine having to have a head bolt pull out of a block and find a Heli coil had been installed and you just squeaked past your warranty?????? Its true. Now you own a boat anchor. Charles Damery No government is competent enough to will outcomes in to being, no matter how much it tries to manipulate economics. Reality will override it eventually. Nobody is entitled to any particular economic outcome, at the expense of voluntary interaction and freedom of association. When people are suddenly out of work like that, they are supposed to be able to eventually find something else to do. Maybe not at the comfort they had previously, but something. State imposed barriers to self employment and artificially high labor compliance costs (and I don't mean wages) restrict that from happening expediently more than anything else these days. It looks like Canada is finally scaling back its mercantilism. It is going to hurt, in the short term. The global economy can not be resisted though.

Bring back the CAT engine for trucks. WHY?.....Because they have better pulling power in the low range especially with heavy loads and as an added bonus they invented the brakesaver. Those 2 features suited my application just fine. I drive a C509 Kenworth pulling 100ton loads of logs on to 40' trailers every trip (3 trips per 12hr shift) with a 550hp Cummins which doesn't have the torque for the hills. My old 550 Cat would run circles around the Cummins and Detroit's. Be Great if Cat (Detroit or Cummins) produced a 750hp engine to keep up with Volvo and Scania.

Detroit Diesel already had a 750 HP two stroke engine back then...It was the 12V-71 TA,it was notorious as the "Buzzen Dozen". Cummins back then also had a engine such as the 1710 which literally was two big cam 855's practically combined into one as a V12,it was used quite often in Kenworth 953-958T mega trucks just like the two stroke V12's were. Detroit's 12V-71 was one of the engines that was available in extended hoods for highway trucks,including Caterpillar's 3412. If you want more than enough torque,a 3408B will do the trick,but then there's also the C18 which obviously was based on it and makes even more than enough power.

guy perked up the numbers a little much. It has 4,300 hp, weighs 408,000 lbs, and has a starting tractive effort of 191,000 lbs. Not only that CAT had nothing to do with this locomotive, all engineered and built by EMD. CAT just happens to own EMD just like EMD was originally owned by GM.

Well engineered, I like it! Would be nice to see them make a locomotive in the 6000+HP class like the AC6000CW. With Caterpillar anything is possible.
@sorindncs

AC6000CW, SD80 and SD90 locomotives were phased out. So at this time the most powerful locomotives in North America have around 4400-4600 HP. Locomotives rated at 5000HP or 6000HP are history.
@Slim_Slid
@Slim_Slid Жыл бұрын
Both EMD and GE failed big time with the SD90MAC & MACH as well as the AC6000CW. The only successful single-handed high horsepower locomotives were the EMD SD80MAC. The SD80MAC saw a short run because Conrail was initially the only railroad that owned them,after the merge most went to Norfolk Southern and some to CSX until the trade deal which Norfolk Southern got all of them in later years. They were sold to Progress Rail and unfortunately scrapped.The last of them are owned by Canadian Pacific being used as parts donors,in storage,for their SD9043MAC's and SD70ACU rebuilds. The problem with the SD90MAC & H was absolutely no harmonic balancing which caused extensive internal vibration leading to broken motor mounts,crankshafts,and other critical components.Even though the 265H was not reliable or durable,later on they were rebuilt by Norfolk Southern when Union Pacific and Canadian Pacific discontinued their service.The 265H ended up only seeing prolonged service in Asia and China while EMD came out with the SD9043MAC having the 710-G3B for both railroads. Finally,the problem with the AC6000CW were the turbochargers from Deutz MKM.Every three months on the dot any AC6000CW had to be sent into a shop to get a turbocharger replacement.They suffered from burning out their seals and having backpressure from the crankshafts,and if the issue wasn't addressed and dealt with they literally would "explode" and send pieces flying. Union Pacific completely rebuilt and derated them into C44ACM's using 7HDL-16's.The units under CSX were designated as AC6044CW's having their horsepower lowered and they actually had no errors whatsoever with a drop like that still using their factory 7HDL-20's.Union Pacific still has them in service,CSX sold them to Progress Rail to keep them in storage longer to evade taxes. Finally,the 1010J in the SD70ACE-T4 is actually based on the 265H,it has the same block and parts,but is completely rebuilt and modernized.Basically it's what the 265H failed to be from the start thanks to Caterpillar. The 265H originally was 6,000 HP so if Tier Four EPA regulations didn't exist Caterpillar actually could've aimed it at 6,000 HP.

I just don't understand how on Earth a 2-stroke gets better emissions than a 4! I'm not tremendously familiar with emissions regulations, tho.... Maybe it's about how much oxygen they have in the exhaust? Or the O2 to CO2 ratio, maybe? In that case, I suppose a 2 stroke could be better, but....I don't know. That just doesn't seem to make sense to me after working on and with the old Detroits and a couple old EMD engines over the years. Years ago, they did away with 2 strokes for that very reason! ????
@sorindncs
@sorindncs 4 жыл бұрын
Two strokes don't meet tighter emissions regulations than four strokes. It is quite the opposite. It is why Tier 4 locomotives are built ONLY with four stroke engines. But two strokes can meet Tier 3 without any problem.

Should have mentioned how cat wanted concessions from its london Ontario plant workers in the form of a 50% pay cut and knowing the work force would reject it shut down the plant and move all production to plants in the states & Mexico where they ultimately got what they wanted. Now EMDs sales have sunk even further as railways have caught on that their products are unreliable. That's what happens when you pay a skilled tradesman 15$ an hour, you get a half assed job. I work with these things everyday and let me tell you there is a considerable difference in the quality between London built products vs the muncie Indiana, Mayfield's Kentucky, and Mexican built models.

No. The prime movers that have powered the SD70's have been around since 1996 and were developed and built by GM's Electro Motive Diesel (EMD). Its most certainly not a CAT engine! CAT have just bought the whole of EMD from GM.

EMD did produce a 4 stroke prime mover in the 6000 hp 265H for the SD90.I think the sd 70 uses the 710 (710 cubic inches per cylinder) 16 cylinder.Cost is probably over two million per locomotive.
@TheKoups
@TheKoups 8 жыл бұрын
yes but the SD90mac (6000HP) was rejected by most railroads because it was a track killer. Too much torque, so much that it "ate" the track and itself. that's why most class 1 RR (Union Pacific, etc) use the SD90/43Mac (4300hp rated) units
@rj4590
@rj4590 8 жыл бұрын
I don.t think that was the reason.The four axle GP60 puts out almost 1000HP per axle and the SD90 with advanced traction control and AC traction motors is more controllable.I believe it is more efficient to buy more 4000-4400HP locomotives.The SD90 was supposed to take the place of two locos,but if it broke down on a train with only one unit you are stuck ,if you have two 3000-4400HP locos and one dies you can still move.
@TheKoups
@TheKoups 8 жыл бұрын
rj4590 there is a reason I said torque and not HP. HP is a relative figure, in short meaning its a useless term. (Torque x rpm)/5252 = HP if I remember correctly. Anyway back to the SD90Mac-H plagued with chassis, engine and electrical problems. the chassis could not handle the *6000hp's torque, which is why the more common and successful SD90/43Mac happened *4400hp There is a massive gap between the GP60 and SD90 in weight. UP still owned *6000hp units from both EMD and GE (GE's AC6000CW used for fast freight) but the power jains to *6000hp also came with a setup in fuel consumption.
