As a young Chiefs fan, I feel a little conflicted about your selection. The first game that came to mind when I saw the title was the blown 38-10 lead against the Colts in the 2013 Wild Card game -- a collapse that seemed unmatched. However, when comparing the circumstances of that game to the 2021 AFCCG, I see the argument Barry is making. The 2013 team was by no means an offensive juggernaut, and was led by an only above average QB in Alex Smith. Meanwhile, the 2021 team would never have been expected to blow even an 18-point lead when led by an all-time great QB in Mahomes and an overall lethal offense. What makes it worse is how other-worldly Mahomes was in the first half. The game felt out of reach for the Bengals, and suddenly Mahomes looked like the worst QB in the NFL.
@zachs.43712 жыл бұрын
I agree, the Colts game was the biggest blown lead by any in Playoffs history and that will not be forgotten. Tbh I didn't even remember that we blew an 18 point lead to the Bengals, I guess that's because with how good both offenses were a lead like that isn't really that big. The Bengals game was definitely more frustrating, but I really don't think it was the bigger choke.

I think in context, the Chiefs and Colts were much more closely matched and the Chiefs were lucky to be up that much, and if they had won it still wouldn’t have meant much because they’re not beating those Broncos. 2017 AFC Champ game was more of a fix-job than a choke. 1999 AFC Champ game was a choke in every imaginable way. Jags forced 4 turnovers, had a halftime lead, and still lost by 19.
@davidthompson77032 жыл бұрын
Refs helped get Brady back to the SuperBowl too. Myles Jack had a fumble recovery and (while remaining untouched) a clear lane to the end zone, but the play was blown dead. Jacksonville would have up 27-10 and as a lifelong Jaguars fan, I genuinely believe we would have held them off with that extra momentum boost. I even think we might have won the Super Bowl if we made it, looking back, the Eagles and the Jags were very similar teams that season. With Foles leading Philly, both teams had serviceable offenses with game managing quarterbacks and were lead by stout defensive units that made huge plays and were the heart of the 2 teams success. It probably would’ve been a low scoring, defensive slug fest of a Super Bowl. If only the Jags won that game… (and if only they managed not to completely fuck up the roster. That front office overpaid Bortles while also running off just about every defensive anchor to turn “Sacksonville” to “Sad-sonville” or if you want 2 even worse jokes, “need to go Backsonville” and “went off Tracksonville” 😭 anyway that’s my rant about the 2017 AFCCG, AKA: the only relevant year for Jax since 1999. I would actually go with the blowout loss to the packers in 2017 instead. I know they didn't blow a lead as big as the SF game, but there were still several things that the Giants did wrong. First was the obvious boat trip and OBJ having a bad game. There was also giving up the touchdown right before halftime, and in general one of the NFL's best defenses that year getting destroyed by Rodgers. But I would say what makes this playoff loss the worst in Giants history was what happened afterwards. The following year the team completely fell apart and hasn't recovered since. The OBJ/Landon Collins era Giants should've lasted longer, but that loss destroyed it all before it really got off the ground.

Superbowl 48 for the Broncos. One of, if not the best, offensive seasons in NFL history, and they got their asses handed to them by the Legion of Boom, 43-8.

I've been a Rams fan since the mid-80's. Undoubtedly, their biggest choke job occured on MNF, Dec. 11, 1989, against the 49ers. I should know cause I was there. LA was up 27-10 in the 4th qtr, threatening to seize control of the division. After John Taylor's 2nd 90+ yard TD of the game and a Rams fumble, SF came back and won the game, basically winning the division that night. To this day, I still consider that loss the worst in Rams history.

I think interchangeably, the jags vs Pats in the 2017 AFCCG is worthy of a more devastating choke, but good list dude

For the Detroit Lions I would have went with the 1995 Playoff Game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Started the game as 3 point favorites but somehow in the middle of the 3rd were down 51-3(!) to the Eagles backup QB (and former Lion) Rodney Peete.

Ooh, I just posted some other Lions options of my own (1970 and 1993 playoffs). Didn't realize Lions were favored in that one.

That was the beginning of the end of Wayne Fontes and the brief era of decent Lions football. They went 36-44 over the next five seasons and then Millen showed up ☢️

Arizona's biggest choke was allowing a 100 yard fumble return before halftime in the Super Bowl. The Saints biggest choke is the divisional game against the Vikings where Diggs had a walk off touchdown on a blown coverage. Although the Saints were very good in 2020, everyone knew that Brees was washed, making them a vulnerable playoff front runner for that postseason. I think they were favored against Tampa but the Bucs weren't scrubs either as evidenced by their eventual SB win weeks alter. The Bronco's biggest choke was the Mile High Miracle game against Baltimore. For Philly, I'd argue that the NFC Title games vs. Tampa and vs. Carolina were bigger chokes. They were the strongly favored team at home both times and lost in ugly fashion both times. New England was at least favored in that Super Bowl. SB 39 does deserve honorable mention though since Mcnabb apparently "choked" in the literal sense during the 4th quarter of that game. The 49ers biggest choke was the 1987 Divisional game against the Vikings. They were 13-2 and the Vikings were 8-7. That team was the Super Bowl favorite that year and it could've been the start of the only 3 peat in SB history since they won it all in 1988 and 1989. I think the Giants worst choke was probably the 02 Wild Card game vs. San Fran where they blew a big lead. That Eagles team was hot in the 08 playoffs and New York was vulnerable despite the stronger regular season record. Lastly, Tampa's 2021 playoff loss was definitely worse than the 1999 one. Yeah, they squandered a great defensive performance but Shaun King was a dog shit quarterback who couldn't be counted on even as a game manager (See Brad Johnson in 2002). Letting Cooper Kupp run down the middle of your defense uncovered is way more egregious than trying to beat that Rams squad with Shaun King.

Good list but I'd say the Chiefs biggest choke was the blown lead against the Colts in the playoffs. And the Eagles biggest choke was getting blown out by a wildcard Raider team in the Super Bowl.

Being a Falcons fan is not even painful anymore. It has become a full body and mind-numbing experience to watch the Falcons play football. You don't get angry, sad, or anything. There are 0 emotions while watching them and if they won the Superbowl my reaction would probably be along the lines of "Cool..."
