Check out this 2022 RAM 3500 Laramie Dually! I had a chance to hook my fifth wheel up to it and show some of the futures along with how the suspension handles over 2800#'s of pin weight. I also respond to a video I did saying, "Don't buy a dually". || Like || Subscribe || Share ||

I'm an RV transporter. For the 5th wheels, you need the dually for the pin weight. For the bumper pulls, you WANT the dually for the added stability, particularly in wind. Even for lighter bumper pulls. The dually just makes the camper much more comfortable to pull. Much more stable, especially in wind. Take it from someone who's pulled coast to coast with SRW and DRW. Also - Make sure your bumper pull is putting enough weight on the hitch. Number one thing that causes sway is too much weight at the rear of the trailer. If your tow vehicle squats when the bumper pull is hooked up and you've got ~2200 hitch weight, sure you can "fix" it with an expensive weight distribution hitch. But you're really masking the fact that your tow vehicle's suspension isn't up to the task.

You definitely don't always need a dually for a fifth wheel. Plenty of SRW trucks that can handle the pin weight of most 5th wheels. Yes, it will handle better but not a must.

@@krisshyne4358 What's the average pin weight of the 5th wheels you've been hauling? The ones I pull these days have hydraulic levelers. Very common to have them weigh in at 14500-16500 actual dry weight. Which is around 3k pin minimum. That pushes the limit on cargo capacity for most srw 1 tons.
@ryanselleck6035

Really what should determine dually or non dually is gvw. If you are pulling a 14 K trailer that only leaves you with 12 K on the tow rig. Gross combo weight of 26,001 or higher requires a Class a that doesn’t need air endorsement. All 50 states no one‘s exempt. My single wheel 1 ton ram is 11900k so I can haul a 14 K trailer without a CDL even though I have one if it was a dually it would most likely be a higher gvw. Also does not matter what it’s registered for it just matters what is on the Vin tag for weight

@@ryanselleck6035 What determines whether you should use drw vs. srw is mainly pin weight. You need enough RAWR to cover it and your fuel and cargo. An srw truck is going to be limited there. If DOT scales you, the axle weight ratings are what matters. You can't exceed any axle weight rating whether CDL or non CDL. In addition, if you are non CDL, then the GVWRs of your truck and trailer added together can't exceed 26000.
@BBBYpsi
@BBBYpsi Жыл бұрын
@@ryanselleck6035 Not true legally. If your GVWR for your truck is 14K & your truck weighs 11900 then that leaves 2900 lbs you can add to actual weight of truck. So if a trailer weighs 14000 lbs then this will add 2800 lbs if nothing is in the trailer. If you put anything else or anyone else in the truck then you are illegal. Also if pulling legally without a CDL you have to go by the actual GVWR of both the truck & trailer combined. You cannot go by weight. I also haul travel trailers for a living. Many guys have gotten ticketed & shut down for this without a CDL. Example your truck GVWR is 14,000 lbs. So this means a trailers GVWR cannot exceed 11,999 lbs. Your 14K weight trailer is probably around 16K gvwr.

Hey JB, wrote you months ago. Originally built a 22 3500 mega with max tow package back in July. It never got here in time so I ditched my build and found a 3500 dually limited crew cab max tow with HO instead. Picking it up this week and really glad I didn't go with the mega cab! More payload and better pin weight load. Thank you for being such a great Ram spokesperson. You really tell it like it is and we appreciate it! Looking forward to getting my new truck home! I bought my 3500 dually in April 2019, brand new. It's my daily driver and I love it. Now as for trailer pin weight calculations. I've said it before and I will say it again. I wish people would stop using the dry pin weight ratio, because it is terribly misleading. You see your camper has a 17% ratio. However, the bulk of your cargo storage (and I'm talking heavy storage) is ahead of the axles on your camper. The further ahead of those trailer axles the weight is located, the higher the percentage of weight that is going on the pin. For example, let's say you put 800lbs in the front storage, I bet 600 of that goes on the truck, and 200 on the camper. So you have just increased your pin weight a lot compared to the amount of weight the camper has increased. So now your ratio is all off. I'm glad you showed the correct pin weight, but I have seen videos where people try and justify a maxed out setup by using those dry weight ratios. And it's terribly misleading. Keep up the great work, and hope you guys had a merry Christmas!

@@supporterofsanity yes, if you read my entire post, I said I am glad he used the proper pin weight, but there are a lot of misleading videos out there where they try to justify a maxed out setup by using too light of a pin weight ratio. BTBRV recommends 20% GVWR for 5th wheels and 10% for travel trailers. And that is very close to what I have seen in the past. JB is the man and tells it like it is. I wasn't saying anything bad about his video, as he did it correct!

Good Video, I ordered a Ford Lariat SRW F350 with payload of 3800 lbs, Gas 7.3 (Godzilla), which is plenty for me. I wanted to stay with gas as I could not justify the extra 10K for a diesel. But I will say Ram does do a excellent job with there trucks also, I am coming out of a 2019 Ram 1500 myself which was a good truck, (not enough payload naturally). Nice job by you doing all your homework on what you needed.... Best of luck to you with your new rig and happy camping.

I believe the standard output dually with 68RFe can roughly tow around 20k lbs. A definite payload beast but IMO it’s very hard to justify purchasing a dually nowadays with that small amount of towing . I think it’s more of the transmission than the engine. What do you think? Yes, you are correct. Though, if you get 4:10 gears with the standard output it gets you up in the 22 to 24k range. In my opinion, unless you are getting into a massive 5th wheel, a 20k setup is more than enough, and the standard output with 68RFE has way better throttle response and all around drive ability as a daily driver. My 2019 is not HO, but it hauls our 41 foot Gold Rush with a 15,500lb GVW no problem. We do have almost 5500lbs of cargo capacity, and that is the crucial thing. If you're going to be hauling big loads every day, then go for the max tow 34K, but you need a big 5th wheel to get into the 20k range. My brother just bought a massive Cedar Creek, 42 ft long Champaign full body paint etc. The GVW of it is 18k. I've been driving my truck for almost 3 years no, as a daily driver and camper hauler, and I love it!

The thing that sucks is that in Texas, if your vehicle and 5th wheel combined are over 26,000 lbs, you have to get a Class A Exempt Driver's License, which is another headache. I am having such a hard time trying to find a 5th wheel that I like and a truck that is hefty enough to tow it, without going over the 26,000 lbs. So frustrating. They go by the listed GVWR of both the truck and trailer. It doesn't matter if you never plan on maxing out the cargo carrying capacity of the trailer, they still go by that. Ugh.

I have a 2018 Ram 2500 373 gears and it pulls my camper fine with the engine and gears that I have. I do feel when a semi is at the back of the camper bc it pulls the truck into the semi lane. I have a crew cab and short bed. Camper is 2017 sunset trail grand reserve 33 BD. I wonder if a good sway hitch would help me or if I need a different truck. Great videos I watch them all I am a huge Ram fan.

Depending on how long your rig is, it may benefit from a WDH. Sometimes upgrading the rv suspension helps a bunch so check out the road armor equalizer kit. A Hensley Arrow WDH is expensive but I’ve heard it eliminates sway 👍🏾

The truck pulls it beautifully but in the beginning it only squatted about 2.5”. The truck now has 19,000 miles, the majority of those towing, and now the truck squats 3.5” with the 5th wheel. Apparently the springs must flatten out over time. Time for air bags I guess.

What I’ve been told several times, was if your rv is double axle , you can use a 2500. If your rv is a triple axle , you’ll need a dually. Not sure how correct that is, but it makes sense to me.
@cmoshpit9171
@cmoshpit9171 8 ай бұрын
Not correct at all. Ram 2500 have a payload of 2200lbs. So if you subtract yourself and family and dogs and 5th wheel hitch. You could be left with 1200 to 1500 lbs payload. Thats nothing. And a long bed srw has a payload of 4100 to 4350ish lbs. With my family and gear that left us with 300 lbs lefto over with our 5th wheel

I also added timbres ses to help with squat and handling to. We are just weekend warriors and do one week long trip on top of those every summer. I asked on some forums and they said most of them are getting pretty light pin weights. This my personal choice and don’t hate on me for it. Good videos though!

I wish the state of PA and other states (Texas, NC, etc...) didn't use the GVWR of the truck and trailer to determine if you need a non commercial class A license. For example on your spreadsheet you showed the trucks GVWR as 14000 pounds, and your trailers GVWR as 13980 pounds. The total of those two 27980. That puts you over the 26000 pound mark. So if you were to register this truck and trailer in PA, you would need a class A non commercial license to drive it legally. I have talked to PA State Police and the have said if you were stopped in PA and you are a resident of PA you wouldn't like the fine you would get. PA has class A, and B license non commercial and the class A and B commercial license. They don't even have to weigh your truck and trailer. They just have to look at both registrations and if the GVWR of each add up over 26000, and you don't have a non commercial Class A, your are ticketed.

NC is the same except with a RV. I talked to the NC highway patrol prior to towing my Mother-in-laws camper, he said I could tow the fifth wheel with the 16K registration I had on the truck at the time with no issues. They are not allowed to write tickets on combined GVWR for truck and RV. But truck and any other trailer, they are all over it. I live at the NC coast, see 1/2 and 3/4 ton trucks towing large campers all of the time, clearly overloaded and fighting to keep them on the road.

@@chrism2042 in PA there is no difference between a RV or any other trailer. I know a few years back a large wood chipper came loose and killed 3 people. I have even seen local police using portable scales. PA has weight class stickers on trucks. If you are pulled over and you are towing anything and the GCVW is more than what your weight sticker states, you will be fined for being overweight. I have a weight class 8 on my truck. Cost me $545 a year to register my Ram 3500. But, I don't have to worry about being stopped for being overweight. Lol
@chrism2042
@chrism2042 2 жыл бұрын
@@RAM-on8xb - In NC, our registration states the weight. I keep mine at 26k on Ram 3500 which still limits me to a 12k trailer without commercial license and increasing tag weight. The GCVW should be considered on RV's here also. I asked the state trooper about seeing so many small trucks towing campers where the truck is obviously overloaded, he said they see it all of the time but their hands are tied due to State laws, unless they see something that is very unsafe. Big thing around here this past summer was seeing mid-size SUV's and Jeep gladiators towing very large campers, truck extremely overloaded with hitch 6" off the road.

You are correct, I'm from PA. I dug deep to find an someone that would answer that exact question of how PA polices weights on small trucks. I was told by DMV right now I won't be weighed. But that is only one accident away from being changed. In PA if you are towing an empty trailer with a GVWR over what your truck is rated for, you are illegal even if it is legal while the trailer is empty. They won't even weigh you. It's a political money maker. The last few years they have been hitting farmers and livestock trailers hard.

You should step up to a F-450!!!! I've driven duallies for 15+ years and I don't have any problems daily driving them over any HD truck. The dual doesn't make it much worse at all. A long bed is worse than a short in parking lots, the wide track front axle on a 450 makes up for that, but the duals fit just about everywhere and I live it the DC/Baltimore area. I was towing a open trailer a couple weeks ago with a Ram 3500 SRW and it took so much more attention than a bigger enclosed with any of the DRW trucks I've had. If you're going to tow long distance much at all and can swing it get a dually!!!

There is so many factors involved in choosing the right truck. I had a bad ass 2018 ram dually with the 3.73 gearing. It was great on my first 5thwheel, but I upgraded my trailer to a 25000 lb toyhauler and I had to get a bigger truck with different gearing. As far as suspension I ordered my truck with NO factory auto bags. They don't work great with really heavy loads. I cut all the suspension off and installed kelderman 4link air suspension. Expensive, but worth every penny. Long trailers, your blind spot monitoring is deactivated, it only works on shorter trailers. Also, it's WAY CHEAPER, to buy a used semi rig and remove the commercial hitch and install a haulerbed and 5thwheel hitch. I almost went that route but I Ultimately decided to stick with the Ram.
