For the non Americans out there, like others have said, most of these hits are illegal. It's rare you get a hit like this nowadays, although it does still happen occasionally. The physicality is still a major appeal of the sport, but the complexity and creativity of offensive and defensive plays is the biggest appeal imo.

For reference, in American football, you can't hit someone in the head ever (or lead with the head in a hit), you can't hit someone if they are "defenseless" (not focused on you but on the ball, exception is blocking, but can't block in the back) and you can't grab any part of their uniform (facemask, jersey, collar, also their neck) to tackle. Besides that, body shots and suplexs are fair game. Edit: NVM suplexing someone apparently is illegal and has been for a while. It was pretty rare anyways so my bad.

Just a couple of things. A lot of the hits especially from the older videos are illegal now. As you thought, a lot of players end up with permanent brain damage and a condition called CTE. I’m general you can’t lead with your head or hit someone else in the head. Most of the newer clips were shoulder to chest, but the dudes are just so big and fast in looks like a semi ran through them. You can’t hit a player before the ball arrives or if they’re in a defenseless position (this essentially means you can’t just blindside deck one of the wide receivers)

Watching a video like this makes American football seem like it's just simply barbaric and entertaining. In reality it's one of the most strategic games in the world. Obviously physicality comes into play, (most of these guys are like 6'5" 250 LBS), but the game is so much more than that. Edit: The reason it's called "football" is because the ball is one foot long.
@scottydu812 жыл бұрын
I looked up the etymology of football and it didn’t mention that. It could be true tho, I’ve never measured it. Football originally meant any sport that was played _on foot_ (usually by peasants) as opposed to on horseback. The American use came from 1867 when the US College circuit shifted from association football rules to rugby rules. Harvard was the main advocate for switching to rugby rules, but compromised on the name by sticking with “football”.

I’m sure a lot of long time players of this sport like myself can agree that you get pretty comfortable with the level of contact on the field, if you keep your head on a swivel and go full speed into every hit, you usually won’t feel much of your pain until after the game.

We’ve seen it. NFL players hit just a bit harder than a rugby player, but they average a game time of 1.3 minutes played over 3 hours.. Rugby players hit just as hard at the beginning, but rugby has no pads and is constant carnage for 80 mins. There’s no stoppage after a tackle. You just get back up and hit them back harder. So the average lowers when they’re tired and tackling softer at the end of the match. For 1.3 mins of game time, both sports hit equally. So considering a rugby player hits just as hard but plays 74 minutes average out of 80.. no contest. Rugbys just levels above.

2:06 Precisely Vik, growing up us Americans always clowned soccer as the “pussy football” for flopping at the most minuscule contact because this kind of contact is what we’re used to. In American football, men get fully drilled and still get up to join the huddle for the next play. But I will say, I have since grown an appreciation for soccer and it’s become one of my favorite sports to play
@timlett992 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I'm a massive American football fan and that'll likely always be my favorite sport but really since finding these guys like a decade ago I've absolutely fallen in love with soccer. It kinda sucks that theres this whole argument between the two sides like "oh this is the real football" and "well you guys flop like a bunch of babies" and all that because both games are truly amazing.

Most people get mad after a lot of these hits because it’s targeting, where you hit the other player in the helmet with your helmet, which can cause a concussion very easily. It’s illegal and a player typically gets ejected from the game instantly.

As the SidemenReacts resident American (who actually has a job in American football) I open this comment section to anyone with questions, I will answer Viks here first though. Simply put, little to none of this is legal nowadays but back then it was. We saw a lot of guys struggle to live their lives after they retired because hits and such like these were such common occurrences that pretty much a whole new rule set was put in place. Its still getting ironed out and hits like this still happen but for the most part the game is a lot safer now. Edit: The feedback and questions I'm getting this are awesome. I really love when people take interest in what I do because behind all the culture wars with sport, both American and normal football are great sports. Keep any questions or comments coming guys!!
