You forgot one: In Spider Man Far from Home, it's revealed that Aunt May was blipped in between Infinity War and Endgame. This is a retcon because back when Infinity War came out, the Russo Brothers said that Aunt May survived the snap/blip. Even in Endgame, Aunt May looked a little older. Maybe it was more because of the lack of makeup, but I always interpreted that as Aunt May got older in between the 5 years she spent without Peter. Back then, I found that a bit genius in that they used this event to slowly make her closer to the comics, so because of that. I was not a big fan of the retcon.
@AbitofEverything4U2 жыл бұрын
Wow, good addition! I definitely see your point of how not being blipped could have been used to age her up by 5 years, but they retconned she was blipped to add to the Far From Home story of how being blipped impacted people's lives. Great addition to the list. Thanks so much for watching!

@@AbitofEverything4U I would argue that there was a huge missed opportunity to show how the Blip impacted people's lives by keeping Aunt May around for those 5 years and deleting peter. There's definitely a story there, and it could have led into a plot where maybe May was a bit more protective of Peter and not quite as willing to go along with him being Spider-Man. I'm happy with what we got but it's a shame something like that wasn't explored.

There's another minor one in WandaVision that you missed. In Age of Ultron, Quicksilver says that the Stark missile landed while they were having dinner and that he and Wanda were trapped under debris. In the flashback, it happened while they were watching TV and they hid under the bed. Ultimately it doesn't matter since the outcome is the same, but it does make that scene in Ultron a little weird.

@@AbitofEverything4U I'm pretty sure the only explanation to that is that the AoU post credit scene took place right before Infinity War or around 2017-2018. I think the Nick Fury Cat retcon fits him well. We know from his previous appearances that he is a manipulator, and is willing to twist the truth in order to get his people to do what he wants. A good example of this is Avengers, where it is revealed that he removed Coulson's collectable cards from his locker, soaked them in his blood, and then put them on the table in front of Steve and Tony. Fury insinuating that his eye loss was over a lack of trust in a person served to try and manipulate and convince Steve of that point in Cap 2.

In addition, I also feel like the "Fury in space" plotline was a fairly major one, I'm not quite sure if it specifically retconned anything off the top of my mind, (aside from the Age of Ultron toast scene), but I figured it was worth a potential mention. I think the Quantum Realm overall is a weird Web Of retcons. In Ant-Man 1, Ant-Man is just floating in a void for less than a min, and returns to anout the same point in time. In Ant-Man and The Wasp, it's a place with actual terrain that you can land a ship into, and again, time seems to move normally (Janet is in there for years and ages accordingly, but Scott is in there for 5 years and only 5 hours passes. In Endgame, they kind of fly through, without hitting any terrain, to Time Travel. And in Quantumania, its back to being a place with terrain, and time related stuff is unclear. Edit: In Ant-Man, it's just referred to as "going subatomic", and when Scott comes back, Hank refers to it as the Quantum Realm, implying they are the same thing, but Hank didn't know about it.

I didn't realize the Loki being controlled by the Mind Stone thing was canon!! That's awesome, I love that so much. It really makes sense, given how Avengers never really felt like it lined up with his other appearances. I actually like the Gamora race "retcon" because I don't view it as one. The Xandar police outright state she is the last of her kind, right? Well, we don't see what happened to Gamora's race after she was taken, now do we? Thanos does say that the rest of her kind is thriving, but I think that's why this is kind of brilliant, he's lying. Thanos is no longer making a valid point, he's outright manipulating her because he's so convinced he's right, and he wants her by his side no matter what. I also think it makes sense for Nick Fury to have known about aliens through Captain Marvel. I mean, why would he be starting up an Avengers Initiative to protect Earth from other worldly forces, if he had no idea they existed until Thor, which was certainly after Iron Man. It makes sense that he had some sort of encounter with them prior to Iron Man. I suppose he could have known about stuff like the D.B. Cooper situation, but that would be yet another retcon, wouldn't it?

My understanding is that it's that the little kid in the Iron Man helmet being Peter Parker is still kind of questionably official. It started as a fan theory, then Tom Holland said it was true that said that Kevin Feige approved, but it's not anything that came directly from Feige, which means it doesn't necessarily have to be true. Also in Agents of SHIELD it's revealed that Coulson really did die... though I guess the pilot implied that he didn't actually die in Avengers when a few episodes later it was confirmed that he did actually die and SHIELD was lying to Coulson about him having survived the attack. Definitely agree with you on which retcons are good and which are bad from your list. (I do think the Mind Stone controlling Loki in Avengers is a little cheap, but that retcon is kind of needed to buy his character in the Loki series.) I'd be pretty happy with a retcon that Inhumans and mutants are the same thing in the MCU and either Inhumans are a subset of mutants that need Terrigen to trigger their powers or those humans with alien DNA have now evolved past the point of needing Terrigen for their powers to activate (despite still needing some other trigger like puberty or extradimensional bangles).

In Ant-Man, Scott is just as heavy when he is small compared to when he is normal-size (because the density of the atoms is simply increased), but other films portray him as being much lighter when he is small, and much heavier when is large. For example: climbing through Tony's suit in Civil War, without Tony feeling the added weight, and Scott making loud footsteps as Giant-Man in Endgame.

Yes, that would be so nice if they would correct that. I know from a purest standpoint some people bristle at fixing previous films (for example Lucas' updates to A New Hope are scorned by some). Every change or reveal is not a retcon. It has to be specifically stated one way and then treated as if it was never different; there has to be an inconsistency. Some of these are just plot reveals.

I thought the same as you. However, if you look at the definition of retcon, it does include plot reveals, as long as they change something that was already established. Yeah, Sony definitely gets the most blame, but it did take a long time for Feige to admit it was an error and then he committed to laying out a full timeline. You can see his comments here, which came out around 3 months after Homecoming was released: www.cinemablend.com/news/1712910/kevin-feige-finally-addressed-the-spider-man-homecoming-timeline-controversy. We did finally get that timeline when the 10 year anniversary of the MCU hit in 2018. With the Multiverse of madness and Loki, I think Agents of Shield, Daredevil and all the rest are retconed. We know that in a different universe The Inhumans is canon. Loki was controlled by the Mind Stone?? Where was this in the movies??
@AbitofEverything4U2 жыл бұрын
Sorry if I am misunderstanding your question, but if you are asking where is this fact revealed in the movies, the answer is that it isn't. The reason I only mentioned it being in his Marvel bio is because it's never been made canon in the movies/shows. However his official bio states: "Gifted with a Scepter that acted as a mind control device, Loki would be able to influence others. Unbeknownst to him, the Scepter was also influencing him, fueling his hatred over his brother Thor and the inhabitants of Earth." You can find it here: www.marvel.com/characters/loki/on-screen. So it's just a cool fact that Marvel has made official via their character bio for Loki. And it makes sense, because Loki's personality was very different in The Avengers compared to how he acted in the Thor movies or the Loki series. In fact, the Loki series, which picks up right after The Avengers movie, shows that almost as soon as the sceptre was out of his hands he was acting much more rationally and calmly. Hope that helps answer. Really appreciate you watching and sharing your thoughts!

@@AbitofEverything4U My bad, I skimmed on the vid and on mute. Missed that part about it on the bio. Personally, not a fan. I don't like the trope that "no one's truly evil, it's just a tool magically corrupts them". They did it again with Wanda with the Darkhold and Gorr with the Necrosword. Also, with Loki, I can imagine his villainous behavior in A1 came from both his previous defeat and suddenly finding himself a sponsor (Thanos). It amplified his desires. With the Loki series, I always take it as an oversight to have his demeanors changed so quickly.
@AbitofEverything4U2 жыл бұрын
@@ThePrinceofHisOwnKingdom Yeah, I agree, I'm not a fan of the "evil tools corrupting people" routine, as it is indeed used alot. Totally with you on that. However, in Loki's case, it does make sense. I think your explanation of how his personality could change so abruptly also works, but it was a perfect explanation to have the mind stone amplifying his hatred. I mean he really looks completely out of his mind in some of the scenes in Avengers. He's sweating profusely and has a demonic smile. He takes pleasure in ripping out that dude's eye to open the vault and he gleefully kills the New Yorkers in the final scene. However, once the sceptre is out of his hands, his demeanor completely changes. It happens both in Avengers after he is defeated and it happens in Loki once again. So while I totally agree with you about not liking Marvel using that trick so many times, it truly is perfect in this case. Thanks again for watching!

So I may be alone in this, and I don't know how valued my opinion will be, but I have a love/hate relationship with the term 'retcon'. Based on your definition from the dictionary I can see that I'm in the wrong, however when I first learned about it, retcon, short for RETroactive CONtinuity, was when something was completely contradictory, such as Korg having a mum and her boyfriend, and then in Thor L&T, having two dads. That to me was a true retcon. Something as far as Wanda always having her powers, but the mind stone grew them exponentially, I always considered that good writing. We can't expect someone to lay out everything from the beginning, and just because we're told something, doesn't mean that the person that told us is reliable or knows the whole truth. That's like me meeting a new friend and they tell me their married. Then, later on, I find out it's their second marriage, and they were married to someone else before. If this was in a movie, people would call it a retcon, but in real life, it's always been there, I just wasn't aware of it.

Perfectly stated! I had the same initial impression of the word as you did. I was honestly very surprised to learn it was a much more expansive word and so it then made alot more sense to me why it was used the way it was. With that bigger understanding of the word, this video took on new meaning for me. Personally, I think we do need a different word for truly rewriting something and changing it from how it was before vs. just learning something new we weren't privy to originally. Those are completely different situations. But since the word does seem to be used for both situations, I therefore found the research for the video to be very interesting. Thanks so much for watching and sharing your feedback. Really appreciate it!

The only retcons that actually contradict stuff are coulson naming shield and korg having 2 dads and even THOSE can make sense if you squint your eyes a little. Everything else is just establishing new information wich how a story is written. You aren't supposed to give the viewer every detail immediately !
@AbitofEverything4U3 ай бұрын
I agree...I think people complain about retcons waaaaaay too much. Most of these are just new info. ofc, the definition of retcon does involve a story that gives us new info about the past. So in that regard, they are all retcons.

Aren't some of these just plot developments as opposed to retcons?
@AbitofEverything4U2 жыл бұрын
I would have thought the same thing until I read the definition of retcon. I'm actually surprised it's a real word, tbh. But the definition is "a piece of new information that imposes a different interpretation on previously described events, typically used to facilitate a dramatic plot shift or account for an inconsistency". So any new plot development that makes us look differently at what we already had been told is a retcon. That's why not all retcons are bad. Many are just shocking turns that make us think about all we knew up to that point in a new light. Anyway, thanks so much for watching the video and sharing your feedback. I love to hear from other MCU fans. Really appreciate it!

is it true that tony stark originally was unable to be in civil war because if his contract?
@jpyanity4432 жыл бұрын
His contract was mostly movie to movie. So yes technically his contract didn’t include Civil War at first, but that’s because right after Age of Ultron, his contract only included one more Avengers movie. They had to renegotiate for Civil War, Spider-Man, and when they decided to split Avengers 3 into two movies

Good point...I wonder if I should look at the pre-Disney+ shows for retcons as well. I admit that I am unsure if Agents of SHIELD is still canon to 616 (it definitely was canon when it was first released). But you are definitely right that it is a big retcon to add to the list if I include AoS into the mix. I personally loved that show, so I would really like Marvel to give us an official answer on it. A bunch of these aren’t what I consider retcons they’re literally just story progression. Like the way Caps parents died isn’t a retcon it’s a plot twist, but saying the little boy in iron man 2 is Peter is what I would consider to be a retcon.
@AbitofEverything4U2 жыл бұрын
I definitely hear what you are saying and I thought the same until I read the definition of retcon. Here it is: "(in a film, television series, or other fictional work) a piece of new information that imposes a different interpretation on previously described events, typically used to facilitate a dramatic plot shift or account for an inconsistency." That's from the Oxford dictionary and it does include examples like the way Tony's parents died. So retcons aren't all bad, even though the term is thrown around alot in a negative fashion. Let me know what you think. And thanks for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it!

That Loki one is bullshit and doesn't count since it hasn't been revealed in a movie/show/one shot. Also...I loathe how Fury lost his eye in Captain Retcon
@AbitofEverything4U2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I definitely agree the Loki retcon is not canon to the movies, but it is still on the official Marvel bio for Loki. The only reason I mention it is that it perfectly explains why Loki's personality changed so much. If you look at how he acted in Thor (annoying, petty, selfish) vs. Avengers (evil, sweating like a madman, violently ripping out that dude's eye to get access to the vault and smiling while doing it, wantonly killing New Yorkers) vs. Thor: The Dark World (frustrated, angry, willing to help Thor if it meant revenge for Frigga's death), then it makes alot of sense that the mind stone controlled him in Avengres. He was unhinged and evil in The Avengers, while he was just selfish and treacherous in Thor and Thor 2. So I agree, it's not canon, but it is a really cool idea. And yeah, I absolutely hate the lost eye retcon for Fury. Ugh! Thanks so much for watching and sharing your thoughts. I really appreciate it!

@AbitofEverything4U Жыл бұрын
Well, I'm not a hater, so I am fine with the retcons, but I do feel that it was a surprise to learn it was a cat that scratched him instead of something more significant. Also, it doesn't line up real well from a timing standpoint with the picture Pierce shows of Fury in Winter Solider as fury isn't wearing the patch and yet it happens in the timeline after Captain Marvel. As for the Avengers Initiative, that one I'm definitely fine with, but it unfortunately gave haters a chance to complain that Marvel was retconning the Avengers concept to be about Carol Danvers. Oh well, haters gonna hate no matter what.
@crazy_acid772 жыл бұрын
A lot of these aren't retcons, just plain old new information that doesn't reframe or change anything.
@AbitofEverything4U2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I do agree and you are really getting to my point at the beginning of the video. Everything I included has been commonly labeled a retcon over the years, mainly due to it being new info we didn't know. And it is true that the Oxford definition of retcon does include that type of new information. But the fact that retcon is used negatively so often makes it seem like all retcons are bad. So we either need to stop using the word retcon for situations that simply add new backstory, or we need to distinguish between "good" retcons and "bad" retcons. Thoughts? Thanks so much for watching!

The retcon of the Avengers name is terrible. The origin of the name was not given because it's irrelevant; it carried no particular meaning. By the end of 2012's 'The Avengers', the meaning was fulfilled by the team, on the basis of Fury's "There was an idea..." speech. With the retcon, the meaning changed; it went from the idea to Danvers alone. Frankly, the entirety of Captain Marvel was a terrible retcon. I've written a fanfic re-write on it and smoothen some of its retcons, but I still couldn't get around the fact that introducing the character at that point in the Saga was way too late. Marvel knew this and overcompensated it by making her overly important, and the Avengers less important. Without the retcons, 'Captain Marvel' would just be another forgettable entry to the franchise. But with them, it got me feeling silly of being invested in the first place. This is the second time I'm here delivering scathing critique for Captain Marvel. As how it soured the MCU for me, I hope you'd excuse me. To not make this post entirely negative, I will say the HYDRA infiltrating SHIELD retcon is a favorite of mine. It alludes to actual history and compliments the movie's theme.
@AbitofEverything4U2 жыл бұрын
No apology necessary. I'm sure different aspects of Captain Marvel bothered people in different ways, but I'm with you that my biggest beef was the unnecessary retcons. That was a bad call by Marvel. Oh, and yes, I love the Hydra retcon. It was fantastic and worked perfectly with the overall story and history, as you mention. Thanks for watching and adding your thoughts. Really appreciate it!
