You forgot one: In Spider Man Far from Home, it's revealed that Aunt May was blipped in between Infinity War and Endgame. This is a retcon because back when Infinity War came out, the Russo Brothers said that Aunt May survived the snap/blip. Even in Endgame, Aunt May looked a little older. Maybe it was more because of the lack of makeup, but I always interpreted that as Aunt May got older in between the 5 years she spent without Peter. Back then, I found that a bit genius in that they used this event to slowly make her closer to the comics, so because of that. I was not a big fan of the retcon.
@AbitofEverything4U
@AbitofEverything4U 2 жыл бұрын
Wow, good addition! I definitely see your point of how not being blipped could have been used to age her up by 5 years, but they retconned she was blipped to add to the Far From Home story of how being blipped impacted people's lives. Great addition to the list. Thanks so much for watching!

@@AbitofEverything4U I would argue that there was a huge missed opportunity to show how the Blip impacted people's lives by keeping Aunt May around for those 5 years and deleting peter. There's definitely a story there, and it could have led into a plot where maybe May was a bit more protective of Peter and not quite as willing to go along with him being Spider-Man. I'm happy with what we got but it's a shame something like that wasn't explored.

There's another minor one in WandaVision that you missed. In Age of Ultron, Quicksilver says that the Stark missile landed while they were having dinner and that he and Wanda were trapped under debris. In the flashback, it happened while they were watching TV and they hid under the bed. Ultimately it doesn't matter since the outcome is the same, but it does make that scene in Ultron a little weird.

@@nh0522 Certainly a good explanation for the change. I suspect it was likely the writing team messed up, so it might be more of an unintentional retcon, per se.

Another retcon: Age of Ultron post credit scene showed Thanos with an Infinity Gauntlet ready to go but in Infinity War, Thanos had to get one forged by Eitri. The writers and directors of Infinity War both acknowledged the retcon from Age of Ultron in interviews.
@AbitofEverything4U

Good one! At first I didn't think of it as a retcon as much as a plot hole, but you are right, they essentially retconned the Age of Ultron scene with the new info in Infinity War. Part of me wondered if the AoU scene actually happened after the Infinity War scene and Thanos had the glove made but set it aside for later use and then finally decided to use it himself. Either way, something got retconned. Great addition to the list. Thanks for watching!
@MagmaCalibur
@MagmaCalibur 2 жыл бұрын
@@AbitofEverything4U I'm pretty sure the only explanation to that is that the AoU post credit scene took place right before Infinity War or around 2017-2018. This is because in Infinity War, Thor says that Asgard could not defend Nidavellir when Thanos came to create the gauntlet because Asgard was destroyed (after Thor: Ragnarok)
@AbitofEverything4U
@AbitofEverything4U 2 жыл бұрын
@@MagmaCalibur Right, the only way it seems to work is: 1. Thor: Ragnarok's main movie occurs (Nov, 2017) 2. Thanos had Eitri make the glove 3. Thanos set it aside for the time being. 4. End credit from Age of Ultron occurs 5. Thor: Ragnarok end credit occurs (May, 2018) 6. Infinity War occurs (May, 2018) Really bad retcon in that it makes the chronology a mess. It does have a way to all work out, but it is sloppy.
@MagmaCalibur

@@AbitofEverything4U Yup. Besides, Whedon never really wanted to do Avengers 3 so he probably didn't have much of a plan for Thanos coming forward. Makes me wonder what Infinity War would look like if he had directed it, though.
@AbitofEverything4U
@AbitofEverything4U 2 жыл бұрын
@@MagmaCalibur Yeah, Whedon was definitely tiring of the MCU by Age of Ultron. It was still a good movie, but you could tell he had lost the magic he had with the first Avengers movie. He then followed up by making a mess of Justice League over at DC. So it was probably good he didn't do Infinity War. I suspect it would not have been good. Just my take, though.

I think the Nick Fury Cat retcon fits him well. We know from his previous appearances that he is a manipulator, and is willing to twist the truth in order to get his people to do what he wants. A good example of this is Avengers, where it is revealed that he removed Coulson's collectable cards from his locker, soaked them in his blood, and then put them on the table in front of Steve and Tony. Fury insinuating that his eye loss was over a lack of trust in a person served to try and manipulate and convince Steve of that point in Cap 2.
@AbitofEverything4U

Good points! Yeah, I think that this particular retcon might have been less well received at first because fans had all kinds of ideas in their heads of what major character caused him to lose his eye. That's the very problem with the MCU fandom in a nutshell getting exciting expectations and then whining and bitching when they're not met I swear Avengers Infinity war and Endgame being as amazing as they were was a blessing and a curse they were Incredible movies and definitely had the large-scale of the comics they were adapting but then it lead to the high expectations and them not always being met which has been an ongoing problem with the fandom since

I think the Stan Lee retcon is the best. It is known that the Watchers have the ability to instantly travel from one universe to another and that their goal is never to interfere. Stan Lee's appearances become that of a single character who has traveled the multiverse and the various timelines. That explains why he doesn't age much.

Yes, I agree, it's a fantastic retcon. Great way to honor Stan Lee and make all of his appearances have an extra meaning to them. 13:34 I wouldn't exactly call that a retcon by Captain Marvel, since Agent Carter (both the TV show and her one-shot after First Avenger) focus pretty heavily on the formation of S.H.I.E.L.D. and those are in the 40's. In addition, I also feel like the "Fury in space" plotline was a fairly major one, I'm not quite sure if it specifically retconned anything off the top of my mind, (aside from the Age of Ultron toast scene), but I figured it was worth a potential mention. Love the content, love the presentation of information, keep up the great work!

Yes, I completely agree that the Agent Carter one shot should take the hit for retconning Iron Man. Excellent point. And I agree, the "Fury in space" situation is going to likely be a retcon. I can't figure out specifically when he went to space. I personally think it was after Winter Soldier, but I guess it could be as recent as after Endgame. Secret Invasion should finally explain it. I think the Quantum Realm overall is a weird Web Of retcons. In Ant-Man 1, Ant-Man is just floating in a void for less than a min, and returns to anout the same point in time. In Ant-Man and The Wasp, it's a place with actual terrain that you can land a ship into, and again, time seems to move normally (Janet is in there for years and ages accordingly, but Scott is in there for 5 years and only 5 hours passes. In Endgame, they kind of fly through, without hitting any terrain, to Time Travel. And in Quantumania, its back to being a place with terrain, and time related stuff is unclear. Edit: In Ant-Man, it's just referred to as "going subatomic", and when Scott comes back, Hank refers to it as the Quantum Realm, implying they are the same thing, but Hank didn't know about it.

How about Thor, Loki or even Odin's blood being red (regular blood) coloured, but then LaT says that gods have golden blood. Or that only special weapons (like the Necro-sword) can kill gods, but Loki died by getting his neck snapped? Maybe Thanos was using the stones in the gauntlet to do that, but it's hard to tell. I didn't realize the Loki being controlled by the Mind Stone thing was canon!! That's awesome, I love that so much. It really makes sense, given how Avengers never really felt like it lined up with his other appearances. I actually like the Gamora race "retcon" because I don't view it as one. The Xandar police outright state she is the last of her kind, right? Well, we don't see what happened to Gamora's race after she was taken, now do we? Thanos does say that the rest of her kind is thriving, but I think that's why this is kind of brilliant, he's lying. Thanos is no longer making a valid point, he's outright manipulating her because he's so convinced he's right, and he wants her by his side no matter what. I also think it makes sense for Nick Fury to have known about aliens through Captain Marvel. I mean, why would he be starting up an Avengers Initiative to protect Earth from other worldly forces, if he had no idea they existed until Thor, which was certainly after Iron Man. It makes sense that he had some sort of encounter with them prior to Iron Man. I suppose he could have known about stuff like the D.B. Cooper situation, but that would be yet another retcon, wouldn't it?

Great comments. Yes, I was very happy to see the Loki / Mind Stone recon be considered canon. It just works so perfectly. On the Gamora retcon, yea, I think if we assume Thanos is lying, then I agree, it actually works out well. And I also agree that I didn't mind the Captain Marvel retcon with Fury meeting other aliens first. The line in Avengers doesn't work out quite right, but it can be excused as Fury lying and not telling the Avengers about the Skrulls. So it works out okay in that case. Great feedback. My understanding is that it's that the little kid in the Iron Man helmet being Peter Parker is still kind of questionably official. It started as a fan theory, then Tom Holland said it was true that said that Kevin Feige approved, but it's not anything that came directly from Feige, which means it doesn't necessarily have to be true. Also in Agents of SHIELD it's revealed that Coulson really did die... though I guess the pilot implied that he didn't actually die in Avengers when a few episodes later it was confirmed that he did actually die and SHIELD was lying to Coulson about him having survived the attack. Definitely agree with you on which retcons are good and which are bad from your list. (I do think the Mind Stone controlling Loki in Avengers is a little cheap, but that retcon is kind of needed to buy his character in the Loki series.) I'd be pretty happy with a retcon that Inhumans and mutants are the same thing in the MCU and either Inhumans are a subset of mutants that need Terrigen to trigger their powers or those humans with alien DNA have now evolved past the point of needing Terrigen for their powers to activate (despite still needing some other trigger like puberty or extradimensional bangles).

Great comments! - I agree, I'm not for certain on the Peter is in the Iron Man suit retcon. I did see that director Jon Watts also said it was Peter in that suit, but unsure if Feige has signed off on it. - The Coulson didn't die situation was handled better than most retcons, but I still think Avengers made it sound like he was dead and as you mention, AoS made it sound like he didn't die in Avengers and then like he did die. Still, I was glad to have him back for seven seasons, so I'm okay with it. - The Loki was controlled by the sceptre retcon was abit cheap, but I agree that it was necessary or Loki's series would have picked up with him being really evil. - Interesting suggestion on the Inhumans / mutants retcon idea. Would be wild to see all the doors that opens for existing storylines as well as new ones. Thanks for the great feedback!

Perhaps since it seemed people knew about the stones (like the Collector did, for example) that Odin also knew and made the gauntlet to act as though he had already gotten the stones or was working on getting them. It seemed Odin's rulership was based on either fear or lies and so he created that gauntlet to imply that he had already gotten them all. But yeah, very good question!

Another one: doesn't Ant-Man & Wasp's mass/weight explanation change throughout the films? In Ant-Man, Scott is just as heavy when he is small compared to when he is normal-size (because the density of the atoms is simply increased), but other films portray him as being much lighter when he is small, and much heavier when is large. For example: climbing through Tony's suit in Civil War, without Tony feeling the added weight, and Scott making loud footsteps as Giant-Man in Endgame.

Yeah there's no real way to make it work. Pym particles reduce the space between atoms but you can go subatomic. We did finally get that timeline when the 10 year anniversary of the MCU hit in 2018. @AbitofEverything4U 2 жыл бұрын
Sorry if I am misunderstanding your question, but if you are asking where is this fact revealed in the movies, the answer is that it isn't. The reason I only mentioned it being in his Marvel bio is because it's never been made canon in the movies/shows. However his official bio states: "Gifted with a Scepter that acted as a mind control device, Loki would be able to influence others. Unbeknownst to him, the Scepter was also influencing him, fueling his hatred over his brother Thor and the inhabitants of Earth." You can find it here: www.marvel.com/characters/loki/on-screen. So it's just a cool fact that Marvel has made official via their character bio for Loki. And it makes sense, because Loki's personality was very different in The Avengers compared to how he acted in the Thor movies or the Loki series. In fact, the Loki series, which picks up right after The Avengers movie, shows that almost as soon as the sceptre was out of his hands he was acting much more rationally and calmly. Hope that helps answer. Really appreciate you watching and sharing your thoughts!

I don't like the trope that "no one's truly evil, it's just a tool magically corrupts them". They did it again with Wanda with the Darkhold and Gorr with the Necrosword. Also, with Loki, I can imagine his villainous behavior in A1 came from both his previous defeat and suddenly finding himself a sponsor (Thanos). It amplified his desires. With the Loki series, I always take it as an oversight to have his demeanors changed so quickly.

@@ThePrinceofHisOwnKingdom Yeah, I agree, I'm not a fan of the "evil tools corrupting people" routine, as it is indeed used alot. Totally with you on that. However, in Loki's case, it does make sense. I think your explanation of how his personality could change so abruptly also works, but it was a perfect explanation to have the mind stone amplifying his hatred. I mean he really looks completely out of his mind in some of the scenes in Avengers. He's sweating profusely and has a demonic smile. He takes pleasure in ripping out that dude's eye to open the vault and he gleefully kills the New Yorkers in the final scene. However, once the sceptre is out of his hands, his demeanor completely changes. It happens both in Avengers after he is defeated and it happens in Loki once again. So while I totally agree with you about not liking Marvel using that trick so many times, it truly is perfect in this case. Thanks again for watching!

While Korg has two dads he could still be referring to one of them as his "mum", considering that other species/races need a male and a female, Korgs still need two people, so it's a close enough analogy I feel to call one of them "mum". You could say he might also be cautious about telling people he has two parents of the same gender (whether all Korgs are male or not) given prejudice prevalent among other races (humans at least), so he says he has a mother until he knows he can trust Thor not to be a bigot.

Interesting theories. I would agree that those are possible explanations. I personally suspect Taika just forget that small detail from Ragnarok and didn't realize he was changing Korg's parents in L&T, but you definitely get major points for finding a creative way to make it not a retcon. I would have thought the same thing until I read the definition of retcon. I'm actually surprised it's a real word, tbh. But the definition is "a piece of new information that imposes a different interpretation on previously described events, typically used to facilitate a dramatic plot shift or account for an inconsistency". So any new plot development that makes us look differently at what we already had been told is a retcon. That's why not all retcons are bad. Many are just shocking turns that make us think about all we knew up to that point in a new light. Anyway, thanks so much for watching the video and sharing your feedback. One Shots and Agents of Shield aren't canon

Agents of Shield was definitely canon when it was release as Feige confirmed that initially. However, I tend to agree with you that AoS isn't canon any longer, which is why I mentioned that in the video. Some people argue it is still canon, but I think you are right that it isn't. However, I'm not so sure I agree on the One Shots. Those were included as canon when released and are now part of the official timeline in Disney+. What leads you to believe they aren't canon? In fact, All Hail the King directly ties into Shang Chi. Trevor is captured by the 10 rings in that One Shot and delivered to the Mandarin. Let me know your thoughts on that. And thanks so much for watching and adding your comments. I really enjoy the dialogue and learn something each time someone comments.

Question: Are The Ten Rings that kidnap Tony in Iron Man 1 part of Killian’s Ten Rings or Wenwu’s Ten Rings?
@AbitofEverything4U
@AbitofEverything4U 2 жыл бұрын
Great question. Shang Chi's movie reveals that Killian was taking the 10 rings name for himself as Wenwu mentions that situation with frustration, but I don't recall it if stated which 10 rings was operating in Iron Man (i.e. Wenwu or Killian). The 10 rings is also depicted in Ant Man as one of the potential buyers for Darrin Cross' tech. My suspicion is that only Iron Man 3 is the fake Mandarin (Killian) and that Iron Man and Ant Man references to the 10 rings are part of Wenwu's organization, but I guess that's never been confirmed. What are your thoughts on it? Thanks for watching!

Likely a smaller group continuing Wenwu's Ten Rings as at the time of the first Iron Man, he was coming out of retirement and the Ten Rings was starting to slowly rise once more. At least that's what I think, maybe I'm wrong but I'm like 75% sure I'm right

@@AbitofEverything4U I feel it’d make story sense if Killian’s Ten Rings were the ones to kidnap Tony, since for one, it’d perfectly set up him finally defeating that group in Iron Man 3 to be satisfying, two, Killian is obsessed with Tony so him kidnapping and torturing him to make weapons feels logical, three, The Ten Rings in Iron Man 1 are set up in Afghanistan where Killian implies The Mandarin/Trevor is from or at least resides in, and four, The Ten Rings was dormant for many years due to Wenwu reforming, therefore, it’d probably take him a while to fully rebuild The Ten Rings as the international terrorist organization it once was And as for Ant-Man’s Ten Rings cameo, I’m going to assume that was Wenwu’s sector, since Killian’s sector seemed to be mostly dead by the end of Iron Man 3

So I may be alone in this, and I don't know how valued my opinion will be, but I have a love/hate relationship with the term 'retcon'. Based on your definition from the dictionary I can see that I'm in the wrong, however when I first learned about it, retcon, short for RETroactive CONtinuity, was when something was completely contradictory, such as Korg having a mum and her boyfriend, and then in Thor L&T, having two dads. That to me was a true retcon. Something as far as Wanda always having her powers, but the mind stone grew them exponentially, I always considered that good writing. We can't expect someone to lay out everything from the beginning, and just because we're told something, doesn't mean that the person that told us is reliable or knows the whole truth. That's like me meeting a new friend and they tell me their married. Then, later on, I find out it's their second marriage, and they were married to someone else before. If this was in a movie, people would call it a retcon, but in real life, it's always been there, I just wasn't aware of it.
@AbitofEverything4U

Perfectly stated! I had the same initial impression of the word as you did. I was honestly very surprised to learn it was a much more expansive word and so it then made alot more sense to me why it was used the way it was. With that bigger understanding of the word, this video took on new meaning for me. Personally, I think we do need a different word for truly rewriting something and changing it from how it was before vs. just learning something new we weren't privy to originally. Those are completely different situations. But since the word does seem to be used for both situations, I therefore found the research for the video to be very interesting. Thanks so much for watching and sharing your feedback. Really appreciate it!

Here it is: "(in a film, television series, or other fictional work) a piece of new information that imposes a different interpretation on previously described events, typically used to facilitate a dramatic plot shift or account for an inconsistency." That's from the Oxford dictionary and it does include examples like the way Tony's parents died. So retcons aren't all bad, even though the term is thrown around alot in a negative fashion. @AbitofEverything4U
@AbitofEverything4U 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I definitely agree the Loki retcon is not canon to the movies, but it is still on the official Marvel bio for Loki. The only reason I mention it is that it perfectly explains why Loki's personality changed so much. If you look at how he acted in Thor (annoying, petty, selfish) vs. Avengers (evil, sweating like a madman, violently ripping out that dude's eye to get access to the vault and smiling while doing it, wantonly killing New Yorkers) vs. Thor: The Dark World (frustrated, angry, willing to help Thor if it meant revenge for Frigga's death), then it makes alot of sense that the mind stone controlled him in Avengres. He was unhinged and evil in The Avengers, while he was just selfish and treacherous in Thor and Thor 2. So I agree, it's not canon, but it is a really cool idea. And yeah, I absolutely hate the lost eye retcon for Fury. Ugh! Thanks so much for watching and sharing your thoughts. I really appreciate it!

Well, I'm not a hater, so I am fine with the retcons, but I do feel that it was a surprise to learn it was a cat that scratched him instead of something more significant. Also, it doesn't line up real well from a timing standpoint with the picture Pierce shows of Fury in Winter Solider as fury isn't wearing the patch and yet it happens in the timeline after Captain Marvel. As for the Avengers Initiative, that one I'm definitely fine with, but it unfortunately gave haters a chance to complain that Marvel was retconning the Avengers concept to be about Carol Danvers. Yeah, I do agree and you are really getting to my point at the beginning of the video. Everything I included has been commonly labeled a retcon over the years, mainly due to it being new info we didn't know. And it is true that the Oxford definition of retcon does include that type of new information. But the fact that retcon is used negatively so often makes it seem like all retcons are bad. So we either need to stop using the word retcon for situations that simply add new backstory, or we need to distinguish between "good" retcons and "bad" retcons. Thoughts? The retcon of the Avengers name is terrible. The origin of the name was not given because it's irrelevant; it carried no particular meaning. By the end of 2012's 'The Avengers', the meaning was fulfilled by the team, on the basis of Fury's "There was an idea..." speech. With the retcon, the meaning changed; it went from the idea to Danvers alone. Frankly, the entirety of Captain Marvel was a terrible retcon. I've written a fanfic re-write on it and smoothen some of its retcons, but I still couldn't get around the fact that introducing the character at that point in the Saga was way too late. Marvel knew this and overcompensated it by making her overly important, and the Avengers less important. Without the retcons, 'Captain Marvel' would just be another forgettable entry to the franchise. But with them, it got me feeling silly of being invested in the first place. This is the second time I'm here delivering scathing critique for Captain Marvel. As how it soured the MCU for me, I hope you'd excuse me. To not make this post entirely negative, I will say the HYDRA infiltrating SHIELD retcon is a favorite of mine. It alludes to actual history and compliments the movie's theme.
