I got two similar trailers like yours. I use them for my roofing business but roofing is slow at the moment. I definitely don’t want them sitting outside causing a problem for my neighbors or potential damage. My biggest fear at the moment is losing or getting a trailer damaged. Already had to pay 4k cause my trailer was damaged by overfill.

Just an FYI. I just noticed you have your brake-away cable is attached to the safety chain. I would recommend hooking this up to your truck separately from the chain itself. If the safety hook breaks where it attaches to your truck, the trailer would not lock up the brakes.

I like how you take ownership of the situation. A bunch of people would blame anyone and everyone else for the situation. And like you said you could have easily handled it differently and caused less harm to yourself and equipment. 30 minutes with a shovel would have went a long way there in that situation. I remember my dads first dump trailer was a little 5x8 bri-mar that would fail to dump a lot in the beginning when we loaded the front too heavy. We would always have to toss some of the heavier stuff out by hand to get it to dump till we learned better how to load it. Seems like you really overthought things and it ended up costing you a bit there when you tried the forklift method. I don’t know how long it’s been since that event and the filming of this video but it seems like you accepted it for what it is and used that bad situation to better yourself in the long run. Props for that.

Couple things. You said you looked up how much dirt weighed ahead of time. 1 yard 2,000 pounds. So that’s where you lost me, if your 12-16 yard dump trailer was completely full, and the trailer can only hold 5 tons you know you’re double or triple the weight. Your hitch even snapped. Got caught up in the moment I guess lol, but that’s crazy that you knew how much it weighed but just didn’t process it in the moment. Secondly, don’t go to the dump with dirt and charge $20 a ton more than the dump charges and waste all the customers money for no reason. You have to take care of your customers. You can go dump for free, charge you’re customers less per ton but still make more profit. Charge by the cubic yard since you don’t have a scale at the free dump site. If it got out that you were purposefully wasting customers money so that you could make the extra surcharge over what the dump charges your reputation would be ruined. Charge what the dump charges per ton and go dump for free. Save the customers money and make more profit for yourself.

Given free space, and your equipment in their possession, they will abuse. It’s human nature. People always underestimate what they have, and what they want to rid of. You have to have them sign off, most times, they pay up on the extra.

Wow! That whole ordeal really sucks! BUT you learned from your mistakes! I've got a question; how do you guys get away with NOT having DOT numbers on your trucks? There's a DOT law that says if you haul ANYTHING for money, you have to register for DOT numbers, and are subject to log keeping, drug testing, fire extinguishers and 3 triangles in your truck at all times, and annual vehicle inspections. Around here in Colorado, even Landscaping company pickup trucks have DOT numbers on them... I know if your truck and trailer are GVWR rated under 26,000 you don't need a CDL, but then there is another DOT law that says if you pull ANY trailer with a GVWR of 10,000 lbs or greater that you NEED a CDL Class A license. Several dump trailer Mfg's build dump trailers with 9990 GVWR, so they know all about this deal. In Calif. you need a CDL A to pull RV trailers like toy haulers that are heavier than 10K... I've got a 2500 Dodge Cummins with a GVWR of 8800, so technically I can pull a HD 14K GVWR dump trailer and supposedly NOT need a CDL. BUT what about that over 10K GVWR trailer law requiring a CDL A license? Around here, the State Police DOT Truck enforcement Squad has roving patrols that do side of the road inspections, especially on roads that lead to the dumps and transfer stations, and I see they just LOVE to stop pickup trucks pulling Gooseneck trailers and tarped bumper pulled dump trailers, so you can't be running around with trailers with RENT ME and phone numbers splashed all over them without showing DOT numbers. They WILL axle weigh you and hold you to the GVWR stickers the Mfg puts on any vehicle. A base $100 Overweight fine with $1 a pound over the GVWR stickers added! AND if your 14K GVWR rated dually is pulling a 14K RATED or better trailer and you don't have a CDL A license, they write you a $250 ticket for driving out of class and put you Out of Service and you can NOT move the truck! (at least until they go home at the end of the day!) Had a buddy that went thru this last year... Can anybody shed any light on this?
@EliteEquipmentRentals
@EliteEquipmentRentals Жыл бұрын
Hey Jim, thanks for your comment. As far as I am aware, my current setup does not require registration with the DOT. When I inquired about it at the CHP office, I was told that not everyone who is using a for profit vehicle has to register, or else we'd be requiring Uber driver and Doordash drivers to have DOT numbers. Also, it is Federal law that any vehicle with a GVWR of 26k or above needs a class A CDL. Certain states like CA take it a step further and state that if your vehicles GVWR and an added trailers GVWR equal 26k or above, or if your trailers GVWR is 10k or above, a class A CDL is needed. Colorado could follow these rules as well. To stay compliant, all you'd need to do for your particular setup would be to buy a trailer with a 9,999 GVWR.
