I do my own wiring and pretty much how you showed it. I used to be a motorcycle mechanic and I worked in a bike shop. We often renovated bikes, which meant a certain amount of dismantling. When it came time to put them back together, it was always me who did the wiring, because the other guys took one look at all the wires and got scared off. That's what puts most people off, but if you take it one wire at a time, it's nowhere near as hard or scary.

Yea, exactly. It's just a check list! The only headache for me, is getting the lengths perfect, so no one wire stands out or looks untidy.

To each their own. I use the pre-soldiered shrink wrap, and I don’t really care if it corrodes aluminum because it’s contained in the wrapping and at least the ones I buy have a very thick and durable wrapping and I have also never owned an aluminum car. I do really like your technique for pushing the wires together. I usually butt them up overlapping and twist them around eachother but it’s a little cumbersome, I’ll try out your technique in the future for sure.

I worked as an electrical reworker in a bmw plant. Their preferred method was to use a crimp style splice with heat shrink. If airbag wiring was messed up, you had to remove the entire leg of the circuit. There is too much liability in the resistant being off and causing an airbag issue. At home on my own projects, I use the heat shrink solder combo that you hit with a heat gun. Haven't had any issues with those so far.

Yeah I have heard the crimp factory splices are better but when I did my 30 year old Nissan it told a different story but as long as it's protected it should last

People grew up with the twist-together method, that one, iirc, is what we call the rat tail joint. Quick and easy, but easily pulled apart/doesn't look clean. Me, I roll both ends together ala western union knot then solder. It's easier to do that if you have pliers and if the copper is thick.
@meseone920
@meseone920 Жыл бұрын
I never knew that it was called western union knot, when I was in the industry of 12v tech/automotive wiring I was introduced to it as a “nasa connection”. Now googling what you wrote I see the nasa joint/connection is a western union knot. Also always heat the copper wire and feed the solder in and let bond, slide heat shrink over and heat.

Everytime I solder it seems to overheat the wire and bubbles or burns the wire insulation. I just can’t seem to get it right. I’ll look at getting the soldering iron you have shown.

You can improve the physical properties of that solder joint by not kust rolling your intertwined wires, but pinching each side of the splice with opposite hands, and twisting opposite directions.

I can trade, solder, read and MAKE schematics etc. What I CAN'T do is afford a Mitchel or other monthly fee to get access to the wiring diagrams. quite often they are next to impossibe to get. For example, getting Dodge 2nd gen wiring is near impossible without one of the services. THey were really hush hush about there wiring because they used same wiring in many many different vehicles and didnt want people buying cars with few otions and just plugging in the upgrades for pennies on the dollar.

Oh one more thanks. My BIGGEST problem is the litany of different types of connectors. I never know from one plug to the next how to get it apart. There has to be over 400 different types of plugs under the hoods.
