Really, really, really, really love this video Mark. So many people generalize your comments and this is such a great clarifying video. Situational, situational, situational. I know for me I am ALWAYS overly cautious, rarely ever past the pin. I know this sounds silly, but your video about being past the pin/back of the green was freeing.

Lower My Scores Such a good video, Ive found myself plateau at 12h/cap this year a and I make the same stupid mistakes every week. So i’ve started to try and get a practice round in where I hit driver, hybrid, long iron off all par 4s and then finish out the hole and keep track of the scores. Definitely helped my course management on when to attack & defend. It’s also helped me work out a yardage I’m comfortable with to hit the green, so I can try to play a shot to that yardage from either the tee or as a layup. Shot Scope is the next purchase!!

“LOWER MY SCORES” My average scores recently are: Par 3: 3.4, Par 4: 5.4, Par 5: 5.9. The reason lots of 18ish handicappers average 5.2 or more on par 4s is that we only drive the ball as far as you hit your hybrid. Therefore a good drive still leaves us 170 yards in and often from the rough or worse. We then have 170 in. If the green is open we go for it if not, water or bunker in front we are laying up. We are probably on the green 10%, greenside bunker 10%, chipping 30% and 50% pitching from 50 to 100 yards. I'd love to be able to club down and hit it 200 yard and straight. Par 3s and par 5s we are on the green 30% in regulation, greenside bunker 10%, chipping 40% and 20% pitching. Much easier to score. There are higher handicap players who can hit the ball far but most of us max out at 220 yards off the tee and that is the biggest reason we are the handicaps we are.

It seems obvious now I've heard Mark say that comparing the same hole for several rounds has some opportunities to offer. I've been comparing my shotscope data for a given round with my averages for that particular course. I have not thought about comparing the same hole over many rounds. Now I've done this there's a clear pattern of where I loose more shots on some holes and almost always the same holes and with the same poor judgement or poor shot execution. I now have 7 holes on my club course where I need to change my strategy. Thank you Mark for this particular remark.

My 2 way miss isn’t helping with my accuracy off the tee, but thank you for the little swing help you gave on facebook the other day. "Lower my scores", 10mths into my golf journey knowing (roughly) my distances with each club, understanding my shot shape (mostly fades with longer clubs), knowing my miss (left pull with irons) has helped me lower my scores from 120's to high 90's. Plus bonus of not losing 8-10 balls a round gives me great satisfaction.

LOWER MY SCORES. Working on club selection and course management with my coach at the minute. Some good ideas in this video. Driver gets me into trouble on the first hole at my course with my shot shape so I take 3 wood with better results. 4 iron is most used club off the tee at the minute, arguably a bit defensive but driver, 3 wood and 19 hybrid would be too much. Shotscope providing interesting data! 4.3 on par 3’s, 4.5 on par 4’s and 6.5 on two tricky par 5’s, the second of which forces a 4 iron off the tea as O/B right and serious trouble left...

Mark- one of my all time favorite videos that you have done! ShotScope data (I have it too) is very useful. Your video helped me better apply the data that I read on my game. 3=3.74; 4=4.92; 5=5.99 for the 2020 season. 12 HC index. Can have a great round but have the 2-4 blow up DB and TB holes a round. Saturday was a 41-43=84 but I had a TB and DB on 8&9. Obviously I had a course Mgmt issue on #8! Then didn’t calculate enough wind on #9 for a DB. Simple things creep the score up! Thanks for your videos! Congrats to Matt for the “Ace”! @CoachLockey.

Great vlog Mark, par 4s under 400 yards on my old course I used to go with driver getting down as far as I could knowing I was pretty solid with 7 8 9 irons even out of the semi or light rough I could go on a run of pars, where I struggled was going in with wedge or gap wedge where I would blast way on in the air and end up in the front bunkers as you said happens, longer par 4 of 430 or above I average 5 to 5.25 looking back at my cards, also funnily enough if I went for the protection shot like clubbing back I used to put myself in so much trouble which left me scratching my head as to why...lol Thanks again..

I was very much take a 3 Wood / Long Iron off the tee trying to keep it on the fairway. Started going Driver at almost every hole and going for distance over accuracy. Cut from 10 > 8 in 3 rounds so it’s working. Get the ball as far up the hole as you can 👍🏻 Lower My Scores 😎

“LOWER MY SCORES” The strategy you’ve suggested here is what got me from a 20hcp to an 11.2hcp. Biggest issue is GER on longer par 4’s due to having to hit longer irons or hybrids into the green. I rarely 3 putt and short game is decent but that 150 plus approach shot kills me because I don’t have the distance to hit even a 6 iron consistently that far. If I could get 20 more yards of carry (in the fairway) on my Driver or 3 wood, it would be a game changer or learn how to hit the irons better 😉.

"Lower My Scores" ... I have not idea what my averages are because I don't have an app. I used to use Game Golf but it died on me. My tendency is to get bogey or par on par 4s. If I get a birdie, it'll be on a par 4. Sometimes I'll duff my 2nd shot or duff a bunker shot and end up with a DB. So there you have it. My strategy is: 1) Go for the greatest distance I can keep the ball in play off the tee on a given day - short rough for me is fine. I hate trees; 2) go for the center of the green or away from the trouble on approach. 3) Putting: I do a lot of lag putting. There's one par 4 that due to a dog leg requires a 190 yd second shot. I used to try to make it and it always ended up as a blow up hole. I now play the hole like a par 5 and get bogeys. I hit an 8i for my second shot and pitch on with a 54 wedge. Take the bogey stress free and move on.

“LOWER MY SCORES” Great video. Made me think about my own approach. I tend to do some of the selection almost automatically but there are some holes where I always seem to struggle due to the layout (bunkers, ditches, trees etc). I need to look more carefully on those to optimise my chances. Got to have patience when changing the approach though as I know it won’t work every time but hopefully should be effective over multiple rounds in terms of lowering score.

Lower my scores, I hit the par 3's at 3.96, par 4's at 5.02 par 5's at 5.58 and I'm a 13 . For the secret golfer, on the 6th hole, he hit his drive 50 yards further than the previous holes where he scored worse. Just thinking that distance had just as much to do as his shot as direction for getting a lower score.

My teeshot, and subsequently how I play the hole, depends on three factors: 1) length of hole, 2) risk off the tee (OB/water/bunkers/ heavy rough), 3) overall conditions (wind, weather, turf conditions (dry vs wet)) of the course/day. I try to weigh thise things against how my game is that particular day. I'm usually not super agressive of the tee, and well very often hang back trying to hit tee with a long iron or a fairway wood. Thats beacuse as a lot of people, the driver is not a great scoring club for me, and the risk/reward ratio with the driver is usually not great. But I try to get within a 5 iron on my tee shot as a rule of thumb on par 4s.

Up here in the North of Europe missing short is smart play, yet the pattern for amateurs is to miss short. On most courses the back of the green is if not totally unplayable, but really tough, cause both maintenancewise but also by the layout. Most greens are sloping towards the fairway, so chipping a short miss in instead of trying to lob it over a bump from heavy rough or from the trees and coppice onto a downhilly green would be preferable.

Intrestingly enough for the last 10 years of stats, as a 4-capper I shoot +.78 on par-4s. Handicap-index in the beginning of 2010 season was nine. Hence, for the stats of 2020 my number is +.65 over 85 rounds. The index is not exactly relevant, cause I have basically been obligated to maintain it in competitions only till 2020 and not yet have had the habit changed. I’d be around 9, had I entered all my scores to WHS. But on the other hand, I would’ve probably played more concentrated, each round, had I done that. I tend to play a lot of my practice rounds with different focus and giving no significant value for the score I play. Unfortunately the competition rounds cannot be separately evaluated on my software. That would give better understanding on the weaknesses and strengths of my game rather than overall performance stats over all collected rounds. ”Lower my scores!” Season end index: 4.5 (2020) Averages: Par-3 : 3.75 Par-4 : 4.65 Par-5 : 5.44 Missing the green has been really hard on the score, cause short game issues till lately. Score with Greens hit : -0.03 Score with Greens missed : +1.15.
