Surfed Blacks 1978 or 79 huge.Very strong offshore with tubes you could fit a bus.The tops of the sets were getting blown back hundreds of yards outside. Was insane, was lucky to make it out on first attempt, caught two waves and on my 3rd, a monster, i ate it and got the drubbing of my life, no leash, swam for a long time and then walked very far to retrieve my board, it was epic.

I accidentally caught a huge swell in the summer, maybe '85. Unlike you, I didn't catch any waves. Got there in between sets, didn't realize how huge it was (no internet back then, the swell was caused by a double cyclone in the Southern Hemisphere), when the ominous line appeared on the horizon, was too far inside. Made it over the first wave, but the 2nd one got me, continued to get hammered, my leash snapped, lost the board, had trouble getting breaths in the foam, felt lucky to make it to shore. When I got there, a friend was lying spread eagled on the beach. His board was 50 yards away, his leash had also been broken by the force of the waves. He looked up and said, "this is a lot harder than it looks." Blacks can be brutal.

I moved to ID a couple of years ago, but I would have been all over this swell. Only problem is I don't have a board in my quiver that would have been big enough. It's so much bigger than it looks from up high once you are in it. Great footage! Gonna take a trip to Costa Rica soon, and coming back home to SD soon to surf my brains out. haha

2017 was big! I know it wasn’t a westerly swell but tbh I was a bit overhyped for this swell and blacks can be bigger and prettier for sure , I was up there today twice for stills and loved hearing the booms of the sets until the wind chop made it less noticeable. Great little edit let’s hope these next swells bring some tubes even if smaller!!

Not biggest in 15 for sure if you count rideable waves. A good big wave day for San Diego, but I’ve seen bigger in the last few years. Back in the day there was an ol boy used to come down when it was big. Drove a red PU with a big black dog wolf looking thing chained in back. He had an 11 foot board he made and would paddle out wearing just his underwear and had a cigar in his teeth. When he'd catch a wave he would howl and the animal up on the cliff would chime in.
