In this video you will see the tallest tire we can fit on a 2020 Colorado ZR2. Our truck is a 2020 ZR2 Dusk Edition that has been leveled with a Readylift 1.25” leveling kit. We haven’t added fender flares and we haven’t done any trimming. The video will start out going over tire sizes and what they mean. We will go on to explain load ranges, tire ply, and speed ratings. We will end the video by explaining our thought process and why we chose the tires that we did. You will also see the truck flexed near the end of the video showing how much clearance is or isn’t left. Remember: No trimming.
We hope you enjoy.
The real video starts at: 00:54
Tire talk starts at: 02:32

This video is so well done that I just can't say enough about it! My ZR2 is ordered so I have plenty of time to watch videos-my first mod of course with be a level and tires. I now have the clearest and best understanding of what to do! I'm coming from a full size GMC and spent countless hours doing research on height, tire and wheel combos, so your level of detail is greatly appreciated. Again, the video is awesome. Use of drone footage and photos, and great narration, I'm impressed!

Very good and correct explanation of the tire size info on the sidewall, one of very few vids where this is done correctly. Secondly, the tire weight is often overlooked as being such a huge factor on HP, and gas mileage, again very well done. Lastly, the '80' series tires are far too often overlooked and are a great option to go tall, and limit the chance of rubbing at full lock when articulated. Again excellent video, one of the better ones I have seen!
@DustinFaddis
@DustinFaddis 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback. I really appreciate you taking the time. I agree, that the 80 series are overlooked. They do allow for more articulation and most people have the initial intention of going higher but always opt for the 285/70r17. Again, thanks for watching.

On my 2018 Colorado, I had 265/60-18. I installed the leveling kit and added 265/65-18 Goodyear Trailrunners. It’s the front struts you have to worry about by going wider. My next set will be either KO2, Duratrac or STMaxx 275/60-18 because I have the room. Oh, and anyone out there, your speedometer will be off. Mine is only 2 mph.

Awesome video and explaining of tire sizes! I just bought a 2020 colorado zr2 and I didn't know what the stock tire size was supposed to be. I bought the truck from a Chevy dealership and they told me everything was stock. I bought the truck and on my way home I noticed my speedo was off by 5mph. Checked the Tire size and they're 255/80/17 Exact same brand tire as in your video. I don't think the truck has a leveling kit or anything either. I didn't notice any rubbing yet, so I should be good. just don't know what has been done to the truck since I was told it was stock haha

Thanks for the upload!
@DustinFaddis
@DustinFaddis 2 жыл бұрын
I don’t feel the leveling kit is 100% necessary with these tires unless you’re planning to fully flex it off-road. However. Great question. A lot of people say you don’t buy a truck like this for gas mileage, which is true... but, you definitely don’t want to ruin the gas mileage either. Real world, in town I get 14mpg. When my wife drives she gets 16.5mpg So what that really means to me is that the more conservative you drive the less it will affect you. I used to get around 15mpg before the tires. Great video. I have a bison. How much ground clearance did you gain from stock? Or maybe I missed it.
@DustinFaddis
@DustinFaddis 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Justin. Well it depends on exactly what you mean by ground clearance. The front bumper is up over 3 inches. Technically the lowest part of the truck. “The rear axle” , only raises as much as the tire that you put on. This tire is over 2.5” taller maybe closer to 3” so that would make the lowest part of the truck about 1.5” higher. It doesn’t seem like much but your rear axle is actually a little higher with this set up than it would be with a lift and using 285/70 17 tires if that makes sense. Thanks for watching.

@DustinFaddis
@DustinFaddis 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Mark. A 265/80 17 would definitely rub on the front of the rear fender at full flex. I’m not sure the difference in size would be worth worrying about. I believe it would clear up front without issues. Surprisingly each truck is slightly different. I’ve seen 2 zr2 trucks with the same tire and size… on one truck it rubbed slightly the other truck it didn’t.

Has the taller tire affected the trucks performance or fuel economy? Is the 33" tire on the cusp of having to do a gear change? Did you have to get the speedometer recalibrated? Thanks for the excellent video,s
@DustinFaddis
@DustinFaddis 3 жыл бұрын
We haven’t noticed a difference in fuel economy on the highway. There’s probably a difference in city mpg but it’s less than .5 mpg. I feel that because the tire is slightly skinnier you save a tiny bit of weight and rolling resistance so the short answer is no we haven’t noticed a difference that would make us want to regear the truck. Regearing is always great for torque and off-roading but definitely not required. We’ve even towed Max weight of 5,000 lbs and it was still better than a Tacoma that I used to have. The speedometer is progressive so you have about a 1mph difference at around 20mph and at 70mph it will be off about 5mph. Just know that if you go exactly the speed limit you’re already doing your 5mph over on the highway. You can have it recalibrated if you want but again it’s not necessary. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching Dan

Thanks for the feedback. I’ve seen that a lot on Facebook. I tried to flex it as much as I could. There was a few times that it got extremely close but never touched. I was taking it easy though. I could see if you go through some huge ruts real fast or really beating the crap out of the truck it’s possible it could rub. So the short answer is… mine doesn’t rub. So, unfortunately I believe that they will rub. The zr2 has wider fenders and a 2” lift from stock. I think that you would have to add a 3” to comfortably fit them. That could still leave you with a little trimming. There are some nice lifts out there if you’re ready to go all out

This is by far the best video I've seen explaining everything. Thank you, very well done. I'm leaning towards the 255/80 R17. Have you noticed any difference in traction losing about a half inch of tread width? Or do you think the tires look to skinny? I cant really tell from the video.

I appreciate the feedback. I have not noticed a traction loss. The width difference from stock is only 1 centimeter total. As for how they look. Walter, that’s a great question. I feel that they look better than they function for everyday use. What I mean is, when it’s icy out or muddy, you can actually step up on it.
