Great video! New boaters(like me) can quickly make a mistake and buy a boat that needs a lot of repairs. I bought I a boat 7 years ago and my engine failed the first season. Also the hull was in really bad shape. It's really important that you check everything and ask the seller a lot of questions. Especially what was he doing to maintain the engine and the hull(antifouling). When I look back I'm glad that I bought a crappy boat because now I know a lot about engines and fiberglass

Great review! One YT boating mechanic said that if you're buying a used outboard just go ahead and replace the water impeller and lower unit oil immediately so you KNOW water's circulating properly and your gears are being lubricated properly. Another mechanic recommended that if you purchase an old VRO-type (Variable Ratio Oil injection) Johnson outboard that you should replace the combination fuel & oil pump immediately as well since they've been an issue; Other mechanics say to remove the VRO system altogether and replace it with a new fuel-only pump, remembering of course that you would then need to mix oil into your fuel. I think if you do some diligent research on the used boat you like you'll discover boat forums and gain lots of insight.

I agree. There are only 2 types of boats you should buy. #1... under 5 years old, just not old enough to have serious rot issues even if neglected. #2 an old boat that your planning on completely restoring and its almost free. Only do this if you can do the work yourself. Everything in between I can almost guarantee your going to regret. I looked for a boat for 6 months... Every single boat I looked at under $8000 had issues. Rotted floor, rotted transom, engine that "just needed a tune up"... yeah right. I mean every boat on craigslist in that price range says "just needs carbs cleaned". I finally settled on a 1966 starcraft. Yup... thats right a 1966. Got it for under 2 grand, it was re-powered in the mid 90s and completely redone, I figure its a blank slate. Its plain and super easy to work on. Even at that... the person I purchased it from said "it was ready to go". Yeah, except the for bad stator, bad wiring, bad trigger coil, and now Im finding a rotted floor under the seats. Again, I paid nothing and expected to have to do these things on a 1966. Trust me...... the same things could pop up on a 1996 or even 2006. I figure I will have dumped another 2 grand into the boat when done So 4 grand for a boat I know is mechanically sound and I know inside and out. Its not new, FLASHY, and I dont feel like Donald Trump out cruising in my 1966 starcraft....... but it is just as much fun.

Have someone with you put your finger over the hole after you take the spark plug out if it pushes your finger off it has compression. Here in Arizona we see rotten transom a lot

Thanks for putting together a tutorial for the newbies. Most material was on point except your pricing guidance. You are leading folks to believe they can get a pristine 26ft boat for $10k. They run around wasting everyone's time looking. Of course a 16ft aluminum boat can be had for that pricing. Some relative size, class and performance criteria vs pricing would be very helpful for the types that would tune into your channel. A well designed and manufactured new open bow 19ft boat with just a few options is well over $50k. Boats, like cars loose value quite fast off the lot but level off after 5 years if kept in factory new condition. Bargain hunters looking for a boat that was $50k new for $10k are going to spend their whole summer looking for a boat and will never get on the water if they are looking for a perfect boat. There is always someone who gets so sick of something sitting in the driveway they almost give it away to get rid of it, but that is the exception, not the rule.

Great job Chris on giving good points on second hand vessel purchases. Always remember if there’s doubt, walk away. I’m into Center consoles myself. Preferred brands are sea hunt, Grady - White, Blackfin, yellow fin, and Boston whaler. While Chaparral Monterrey and carver are also solid choices for family boats and a good entry level boat is Mako, if roaming shallow waters nothing simply beats a Hewes or Carolina skiff, in my small boat options, “what I mean by solid, starts with Build. Outstanding construction, stringer set up, how thick and well fiber glass is layered, thickness of gelcoat. Us fighting organized do they use quality stainless steel cleats or lesser quality. Remember tying up lesser quality cleats tend to give eith age stainless do not when maintained. Look how boat is wired, if it’s a disorganized mess? Construction is likely similar, what you cannot see is similar to wiring, keep that in mind. Some great manufacturers take short cuts too! Always get a marine survey prior to making a purchase. They generally charge by the foot. Will test propulsion systems, hull and deck integrity. will give your vessel a complete physical. Side note: They will save you a lot of coin in long term, particularly when purchasing more expensive options Remember as previously stated “if there’s doubt walk away.” Hope this helps and you gave great pointers my view is on both fresh and saltwater boats living in both Minnesota and Naples Fl during different times of year.
@richcherwalk6349 Жыл бұрын
Most important thing is to get a boat built after 2000 when boat manufacturers started using marine grade plywood. A 98 bayliner imo is worthless, everything after 2000 has marine grade plywood. Everything else in a boat can be fixed, rot can't unless you're nuts and want to spend 2 years rebuilding a boat.

I started it and it struggles to start. It was smoking a little bit but unlike before it would go away after it warmed up, not this time. So shut it off, and let it be. Came back the next morning and oil was dripping from the side of the lower unit, it had never done that. I did had issues starting it though when I first bought it, but being a mechanic thought I could make it work. It's just getting expensive as it goes. I rather look to invest in a newer one and see if someone is willing to put the time and money on this one. I'm pretty much just letting it go cheap and take the loss.

#1. Applicable transfer of ownership paperwork for the state it is registered in for both boat and trailer. Depends on state of the laws. It's all the paperwork or move on and forget about it. #2. Check for transom flex and soft spots in floor. Put your body weight on the outdrive and check for flex. #3. Inboard engine boat. An engine run test to check for water leaks for 10 minutes on the engine is absolutely mandatory. Cracked engine blocks are one of the top reason people get screwed over on a used boat purchase. Checking the oil comes afterwards to look for milkshake. All the other stuff mentioned comes afterwards.

Living in CA is not really practical for them to tow boat to a lake to test before buying. Just gonna have to do a street inspection like you did. Thanks.

We are planning on buying a boat this fall to take advantage of sales. We don’t mind not using it until next year and I’m sure we will have a few days we are able to take it out until then

Sorry I can't give advice on that. To much I don't know. Like how much is the new engine? My guess is the boat is worth 14k in great condition but, depends on your area and so much other stuff. Sorry I'm no help

There are no guarantees when buying a boat. But, when you get a good one boating is super fun. Good luck on your search

Also water test the boat on water. The boat could run perfect on land but as soon as it's on water it could run different.

I’m an boat amateur to the fullest. I know nothing about boats however, I’m taking the necessary steps to becoming more knowledgeable. There is a Sea Ray 175 series for sale right at 5K. Year 2000 and it has a rebuilt engine. Also includes the trailer. The owner says it’s in great shape. What’s the most important thing for me to look at before purchasing?
@fredperello20294 жыл бұрын
Deron Barnes if you can't run it in the water, make sure you put the ear muffs on the outdrive and run it on land with a hose. It should start easily and shift into forward and reverse with no problem. Check the dip stick on the engine for milky looking oil. If milky, you have a blown head gasket and that's major. Then the rest of what he mentioned. I'm looking at a sea ray tomorrow myself but I know the outboard isn't running. Check the floors for rotting and the major stuff. After you run engine for 5-10 minutes feel the exhaust manifold. They should not be very hot if the motor is cooling properly. Just tap them and see with your hand. Good luck.

No boat is perfect especially used one. You just gotta make sure the price is reasonable if there’s stuff that needs to be replaced

I have to say after reading a lot of the other comments...you guys have too much money to spend on boats. There's no reason anyone should be paying 6 or 7 thousand for a boat that might have problems...I have a couple just because I've gotten them for FREE off Facebook marketplace and after putting around 500 dollars into one of them I have a running, comfortable, and fun toy to play with. It took a lot of work yes, but everything I did is easily learned off KZbin and asking some questions. When I got that boat (1983 16ish ft Sea Ray) it had a seized mercruizer 165 in it. I completely rebuilt the engine for next to nothing, put a new floor and seats in (all custom built my myself and friends), and deep cleaned everything else.

conventional drive is superior to IO. Lass parts to replace, less chance of flooding. Less corrosion issues.

Outboards are superior to inboards and I/O power because of the latest technology.
