Saddle road a 60mph “safety hazard” to those who wish to view this epic event?? Nope, no 60 mph right now. The solution is NOT shutting down parking along the side of a major road which provides perfect, simple, unfettered viewing of this rare event... the solution is to designate specific stretches of Saddle Road for parking and to temporarily drop the speed limit during the eruption as NOBODY is speeding through there now anyway. And for anybody who wants to complain about a temporary reduction in speed limit to maximize safety concerns and to provide for the VOLUMES of those who wish to see this truly marvelous event, perhaps due to their own commuting requirements between the two sides of the island, consider this; WTH you going to do IF the flow cuts off Saddle Road?? Will you then complain about Pele disrupting your “convenience” also?? This is life on the Big Island. Toughen up, buttercup... and quit your sniveling. Life REQUIRES regular adjustments. Conveniences are not static rights.

Whether you like it or not, SAFETY will always be an issue. Or an excuse. Because not all are respectful and have etiquette for others and/or the environment around them. Been hearing stories already of truck drivers nearly hitting tourists that have any common sense. Vehicles are much bigger, heavier, more powerful than a piece of flesh with no brain.🤦🏽‍♂️🤦🏽‍♂️

Saddle road which is also known as Daniel K.Inoyue Highway or HWY 200 runs from one end of the island to the other end east to west and runs between our two mountains mauna kea and mauna loa. So if the lava reaches the highway and eventually covers it then the only way to get around the island are to drive the coast lines which can add to your commute time. There is our military camp ground called Pohakuloa Training area which is just below Mauna Loas eruption towards the West but they haven't disclosed if they're are evacuating or not. Hope this helps. Also adding onto what 808 said. The lava is almost to a crucial spot which will determine whether the lava will propagate towards Hilo or to the west. Also estimates on other videos stated that at current rates the highway could become covered in lava within 2-3 days if the eruptions lasts that long. Yet it would likely take weeks to months to even reach the nearest communities on either side. Currently, nothing is threatened and I'm sure warning will go out with weeks notice if there are any at threat.

The fastest would be 2 days, but they expect the flows to slow and take longer Traffic control on highway? Don’t park or walk on shoulder, looking into setting up training area to provide watchpoint for people to park

If that lava takes out saddle road it is going to really fuck the island logistics. The best thing about living on island is road access from east and west. I have a feeling Pele is going to be on a tear. Call it beautiful now, but in a couple days things might start to get a bit sketchy.

Yh it's one of the only roads that connects the two populated sides this volcano usually only erupts for around 25days to a month so hopefully not to much damage is done and they should already be organising clean up crews for when it stops, the other roads that connect the two sides are really thin and will add a few hours on the travel time and can get blocked by 1 car

@@areyoukitten7688 well the first night you could park anywhere there were very few people there, last night it was crazy, there were thousands of people, I got ran off by the cops three different times until I finally found a place . I don’t t remember what it was called (I’m a tourist) but it was a road with a gate and a small parking area to the side, they we’re letting pystay there. My advice would be wait until after midnight and go after most people leave, at least that’s what happened last night. I got some amazing photos and there is a time lapse video on my page. I’ll upload the rest once I get back to the mainland.

Local resident here: the lava came down the mountain slope until it reached a relatively flat area. It is expected to slow down and pool in the relatively flat area and follow the same route as the 1935 Mauna Loa eruption pattern. The lead scientist/ volcanologist on the island talked about the pattern of the 1935 lava flow on a conference zoom call yesterday.

Don’t trouble yourself. This is not a Pompeii type violenty explosive, hence dangerous, eruption. This is a superb display of nature made for simple, easy and primarily safe viewing. Read up on Big Island “eruptions” to learn that it has “effusive” type of eruptions... not violent and explosive ones. Then you can save your prayers for important matters. This is more theater than anything... especially for now. Anybody who may end up in the path of a flow is going to have months down to weeks to take action for their safety. This is not what prayers are for. Prayers are for instant violence that you didn’t see coming.

Building a berm to divert lava flow worked in Iceland to save the road and farm. But if it is only the road here, how critical is the road? Is there a go around option? Would it cost the same to repair the road after vs building berms? If the lava does not get the road, then the money on the berm is wasted. I do wonder how hard it is to remove the lava after it is cooled down, and waiting for it to cool could be awhile....?

There are other roads but they go around the coast and are not as convenient. The usefulness of a berm probably depends on the speed of the flow and direction, but I'm no expert, just a tourist. When I was last there they were repaving the north coast road with the new fancy asphalt laying machines so once the road underlayment is prepped they can probably pave it fairly quickly, as in months.....

It is a critical artery for safety, evacuation, hospital, tourism and commerce it is in fact the only modern highway connecting the two sides of the island population that is separated by a vast uninhabited area, The go arounds could be blocked by a single car and add many hours of drive time to the south and go right through a small town on the other side. In other words a potential nightmare. There are millions of tons of old lava that could be bulldozed into a berm on site.

The only problem with building a berm at this location means it will be diverted on a direct line to populated areas, or if its made out of old volcanic rock from past eruptions it will just slowly melt through it and as its slowed down it will build up and course more damage to the highway instead of just passing over it, it will spread out making the cleanup job take much longer

On the whole, building berms has had mixed results. Berms failed, for instance, during a 1960 eruption of Kilauea.

The source is melting within a plume of extra hot mantle rock. Old oceanic crust gets recycled into the mantle at subduction zones. Earth is not shrinking since no material is being lost by these processes, just being moved. Volcanoes themselves do inflate and deflate over time as magma moves underground and gets expelled in eruptions.

There is a burm like feature that should direct the flow along side of the saddle road. and then turns towards Hilo and that will take a while but it is pumping.. If the flows wer on our side the highway would have been cut . and theire our houses everywher now. Did see this one. Yusaku stopped by asking about the house I told them we were going in together and the stamp was no longer an issue .. More wood coming tomorrow. Kitchen walls completed today insulated too. Subaru has transmission issues. Replaced fuel filter and it really help acceleration. but at 45. It slips and I have to wiggle gas and it goes fine. Good above and below and intermitent. They would not charge me . Will have them do what is needed . I really like driving tha van. It was a cold morning with hail .. rain has finally ended . have a pile of clothes to wash and hang. Mauna Loa gives us a slim glimpse into the way the Siberian Traps event wreaked havoc 250+ million years ago. Lava pouring out, oozing out from elongated fissures as opposed to an explosive eruption that most associate with volcanism.

This is on The Big Island, also named Hawaii, in case you didn't know. Honolulu and Hilo are on it. CNN quote: "Mauna Loa, the world's largest active volcano, erupted this week for the first time in 38 years. Its neighbor Kilauea, which is also in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, has been erupting for more than a year." It's a very rare sight to see two neighboring volcanos erupting simultaneously. Hope people stay safe.

Perhaps firefighting airplanes could drop seawater on one side of the head of the flow and bend it away from houses. All you have to do is cool it enough to make a pile and the flow will turn. Like a cattle drive deals with a stampede. Head em off and turn the herd.

Sorry, but that is a penny wise pound foolish idea. If that idea had any possibly of making a difference it would have been attempted long before now. The only option that has any possibility of working is to use berms to divert the lava which doesn't always work either. Besides all of that the lava flow is many miles from affecting human habitation or businesses.

There was an attempt to do that in Iceland in the 70s. There was some limited success, according tot he USGS page I found, but it involved pumping about half a million tons of seawater onto the flows. Not really feasible at this elevation.
