I'm pretty sure that if these sport allowed punches to the head, there would've been a lot of casualties. These athletes are strong as a rock and very well conditioned, so please people stop the trash talk.

Norberto Topete Being kicked in the face is more devastating than a punch. If punches where allowed to the face it'd be similar to bare knuckle boixng. A lot of facial damage but no brain injuries like with gloves. You can't throw a powerful punch without breaking your hand. So punches bare knuckle wouldn't be a drastic change other than bloody noses and facial swelling. The bigger problem would be guys breaking there hands and fingers hitting the head. The other footnote, kicks to the head cause more damage than a punch. I'd rather take a couple punches to the face than get clipped with a heel or shin to the chin.

Kyokushin is a good striking art. The lack of blows to the head is unrealistic, but this is a competition, not a brawl; and compromises have to be made. Like others have noted, punches to the head are forbidden to minimize injuries to the fighters' hands. At the risk of sounding like an armchair quarterback (sitting on my butt in front of a computer is very different from actually being in the ring fighting someone), I felt like Travers didn't execute his game plan as well as Gateshev did his. Gateshev seemed focused on hurting his opponent's ribs, which is a good idea. Travers maybe was trying to destroy Gateshev's thighs (what Muay Thai fighters call "chopping down the tree"). This is also a really good idea. However, he didn't seem to implement his game plan as energetically as Gateshev implemented his.

Some people do get the misconception about Kyokushin. It does teaches defense but it also hardens the body so that when you do get hit you won't be "knocked" off your game"

For all those saying this isn't real karate, I'll remind you all that movies set unreal expectations for you guys. No, you can't knock 50 people out just by throwing 2 punches like in Ip man, 3 fit adults armed with a glass bottle or knife could easily take down even a professional and experienced martial artist. So please, remind yourself that martial arts doesn't always have to look brutal to be effective. Thanks, I am a black belt my self and I do not look like I'm in Bruce lee movies when I'm sparring.

Daniel Pantli To be honest Im surprised these are supposedly black belts. Maybe they are just adjusting to compete like this and not what they learned but it is actually making them worse at their art. The range is completely wrong. They stand there in the pocket with hands only covering their mid body and just trade shots to the stomach apparently missing solar plexus or liver targets. These dudes are kind of training themselves to get knocked out if they ever get in a no holds fight. Definitely not good karate.

Punches to the head being forbidden doesn’t have anything to do with minimizing injuries to the hands. Kyukiahin fighters condition their knuckles to an incredible high extent. It’s simply because the fights would be too short if they allowed punches to the head since punches are easier to land than kicks and bare knuckles as hard a kyukushin fighter’s would simply make the matches way to short due to how quickly faces would get cut up. It’s basically to make the matches linger and the sport more enjoyable to watch. It also motivates the fighters to land more kicks to the head in order to knock the opponent out, which creates an elevated level of suspense and a more enjoyable sport from a spectator perspective.

If you look at boxing as an example, in the transition from bare fists to gloves a lot more people have died or had serious injuries after the introduction, due to more head shots
@MoiLoif
@MoiLoif 9 жыл бұрын
***** Basically, when you hit someone in the head bare fist you are likely to do some damage to yourself so people don't do as many head punches, the introduction of gloves meant that people were free to hit the head with no repercussion often leading to brain damage and death

Because a kick to the face is harder to achieve, and if you are good enough it shows balance and strength. A punch to the face would be an easy hit, but a kick is harder. Only a good fighter can achieve that and knock someone out with strong technique.

Not just less injuries but it shows better balance. A kick is harder to do to the face, a punch is the lazy option. If you can kick someone to the face and knock them out without injuring yourself then it shows good conditioning as well as more strength in the legs and body.

Judo, Wrestling and Grappling are full contact but they don't strike. Boxing and American Kickboxing are full contact but you wear gloves and aren’t allowed to elbow or strike below the belt. Kendo is full contact but you're wearing literal armour and only have to touch to score. Full Contact is a pretty vague term.

@matt - the white guy comment is rather under handed. Race doesn't determine ability. The regulations pertaining to contact martial arts in a tournament setting are vastly compromising to the applicable mechanics of any given style. I guarantee those punches, kicks and knees hurt; their ability to continue sparring is testament to their conditioning.
