I did chicken on the 18 yesterday in -2 weather. The Old Smokey did a fantastic job. My Weber Jumbo Joe and Old Smokey 18 are my dynamic duo for winter cooking. Another great video.

Awesome instructions on how to prepare the bird. Cut in half is much easier to grill! Thanks Big Lew!

Just found your channel! Fantastic content, and I will definitely be giving this a go! I have a good amount of experience with smoking, but working on my charcoal grill game! Bought an 18” Old Smokey, and love that thing so far!

I didn't need the taste test neither... you can tell by how it wants to fall apart that it is done and ready to be consumed in mass quantities. Thanks for sharing.

Great vid! The 18" Old Smokey was my first grill, and I cooked on that baby just about every weekend for about 10 years. I gotta lot of mileage and love out of that little grill. When I moved, I "upgraded" to a 22" Weber kettle, but I miss my Old Smokey. Especially when I'm doing chicken.

Zach B. I have a 22” Weber as well the Weber is a better built grill. However, I think the OS is the best value grill on the market priced under $100.00. I have the 18” and 22” they are not made to last for ever but the cook very well. Yes, they are fantastic chicken cookers. The 22” OS does not do a steak as well as a the 18” with out a slight modification. It is also easier to cook a whole Turkey on the OS than the Weber because of room under the lid.
@zachb.66066 жыл бұрын
Agreed! I have the Slow N' Sear with my Weber which makes cooking steaks a breeze! I have seen some guys elevate their charcoal grates with some empty soup cans or bricks on their OS so they can sear steaks, but that's a little more work. I kinda want to go back to my Old Smokey for some reason. lol.
@BigLewBBQ6 жыл бұрын
Zach B. Yes that is the easiest mod, elevating the charcoal plate with cans. Four soda/beer gets the job done nicely. The Slow n’ Sear fits the OS 22” but I haven’t done so yet. I’m considering doing a S n’ S with the OS video soon.

Nice job my man! believe it or not I like my old smokey way better then my Webber kettle for grilled chicken,(and sum other things), liked how the weather didn't faze you one bit, keep up the good work 👍

knight shift; I'm in total agreement. The OS 22" does a much better job with Chicken, burgers and any thing else prone to flare ups. Because the coals are 8" away from the grate and only 5" inches on a Weber. You can cook foods direct with an OS that have to be indirect with a Weber Kettle. Steaks get a better sear on a Weber, however. Unless you modify the OS buy raising the charcoal tray with four aluminum beer/soda cans. Then the OS will cook steaks as well a Weber. If I only had one grill it would be the OS 22". In fact for many years of my life it was my only grill. I'm a huge fan of Old Smokeys.

Big Lew BBQ totally agree with everything u just said , sounded like I was talking to my self for a while when reading your reply lol... I actually do low n slow Cooks on my OS but over the coals/direct heat, do to less flare ups and being so far from heat/coals it's much easier not to burn the food... I use my OS more then my Webber kettle belive it or not.. Sometimes I slow cook on os then finish it off on my Webber using hot and cool zone/smoker type to give it lil more smoke flavor as well as just to keep the food warm especially when I have more people over...I can enjoy some beers, conversations,games on tv more and not worry so much bout burning the grub. Anyways!!! Thanx for the reply brother can't wait see more of your cooks

knight shift I'm in total agreement. I prefer to cook most things on the OS, but Webers are good, they popular for a reason. There are also many accessories available for Webers. This may be because Webers are so popular. But it may also be because stock Webers need them. An OS Jumbo doesn't require a Slow-N-Sear or a Smokenator. It does low and slow just fine with out add-ons. You are a wise man Knight Shift.
@knightshift87147 жыл бұрын
Big Lew BBQ Don't forget that most accessories for Webbers work jus as good on the old smokeys , Something that people on a budget should think about... I went work out town for a while and didn't want spend as much $ on another/same grill I already had back home(Webber), who would thought the way cheaper grill/old smokey would come up on top lol (well for me at least) no dis to Webbers in any way as I will always keep/have one in my Arsenal

Thank you for the video sir, very down to earth person. I want to know how long did it take to BBQ the bird and how often do you flip them?
@BigLewBBQ6 жыл бұрын
Hutch Hutchinson total time on the grill is about 45 minute to an hour. Flip at round 20-25 minutes. Cook chicken to 165°F in the breast and 180°F in the thigh. Thank you for watching.

Do you ever feel like the old smokey doesn't get enough air? I feel like my fire dies down rather fast. Unless I keep the lid open for awhile. Any tips or ideas on what I might be doing wrong? I've even thought about adding a new vent on the side or adding extra holes on the botttom.
