The Old Smokey Jumbo is fantastic chicken and burger grill. But that is why it is not a great steak cooker. In this video I explain the secret of why it does chicken and burgers so well. Then I explain how you can get better high heat searing ability with empty drink and number 10 cans.

I use my Old Smokey a couple times a week. It lives uncovered on a deck in humid Conroe TX. It last much longer than my Webber Kettle grill for some reason. I use different sized bricks under the coal plate depending on what I am cooking.

Jeffrey Coumbe Very Cool, Yes Old Smokey’s last of you keep them clean. You must be very faithful about removing the ashes. I usually remove the ashes, but there are sometimes that I am neglectful. Shame on me.

Hey Big Lew! I just got my first Old Smokey, and am learning the temps and the vents! This video was very helpful for me! I primarily want to use it for direct grilling and am trying to get the right combinations! Thank-You Very Much for introducing me to Old Smokey, and for the various cooks it can do! I am really enjoying the process! Cheers!

Hi Lew, I have a super lrg smoker like this one I'm newish to bbq. I liked the way you explained everything & it made sense. I know I'm about 3yrs late lol but is there any vidoes you have showing like how to keep the temp/ or your best setting for diff meats? I'm only good with pork chops (Chicken has been a fail) its like nvr cooked long enough (coals burn out & if i add to the one's already hot they nvr get hot enough or too hot) & the chicken is nvr like bite thru. its like I need to finish off in the oven!) Well I was happy to see your channel & I pray all is well.

Hey Lew, just found your channel today and I'm really liking what you do. I picked up an 18" at Academy this afternoon on clearance for $12 and I'm excited to start trying it out. It was an open box and it had never been used but it was a little bent up so I'm wondering if the two halves should match up well or if it's okay for there to be some little gaps since both halves appear to be exactly the same size so I'm having a bear of a time getting them shaped up to match up just right. I'm guessing these are better for hot and fast than low and slow anyway right? But do they leak a lot of smoke between the halves or have you ever done anything to seal them up a bit?

12 Buick’s is a good deal. If it is out of round you can likely fix it with a tourniquet. Take piece of para cord around the outside just under the lip and screw driver and twist if you don’t understand I have an old video on how to do it. See the 1:37 mark of this video to see how I made another grill round that was a bit misshaped. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nZmVlYOtp6mKg5Y

@@BigLewBBQ Wow, thank you for this Big Lew! I had planned on taking a rubber mallet to it and driving myself insane with overcorrections and I never would have thought to do this. I'm looking forward to testing this thing out. I started with a pellet smoker about 6 months ago and decided that while I love the convenience, I want to play with fire. I'm planning on getting a kamado style grill and smoker later in the year but when I saw this thing for less than the price of a steak I figured it was a no brainer and I think it's much better than the cheap little Kingsford kettle I have. I love that it's produced in the USA too of course. Just subscribed to your channel and look forward to seeing what you do next.

Bill Goodwin Probaby so, but it is the only 3/4” bit I had. I had no metal bit larger than 1/2. Also, it is old and rusty. I have a step drill bit but it is more expensive and wasn’t worth using in the can. Besides, I’m a foreign language teacher, industrial arts teachers don’t like me anyway.

Thanks for sharing this video! Old Smokey grills are the best grill ever for the money you spend. I had one (14" size) when I was in college and we cooked chicken on it every weekend! My Old Smokey was the only thing I took with me (beside my diploma) when I left school!
