PPC capacitors are one of my favorite bits of advanced tech. "So, it weighs the same as a heatsink." "Okay." "And kinda does the exact opposite." "Why the hell would I want that?" "It makes a Light PPC into a regular PPC for the weight of a Clan ER Large Laser." "I'll take two."

A curious mech with a very generalist weapon configuration, along with some very familiar-looking aesthetics. It’s either supposed to be a slower and heavier Shadow Hawk, or a slower and lighter Marik version of the Clan-based Summoner/Thor. Its primary production variant even echoes that of the Summoner/Thor Prime, with a PPC/autocannon punch backed up by an LRM rack.

I have an ongoing interest in the Dark age period from my Clickwarrior days. knowing this is a Marik Dark Age design gives me some more impetus to play some scenarios from the period. Most of the novels followed the action in the "south" of the Republic, it might be nice to tell the story of a campaign or two in the neglected north, or the final Balkanization (to date) of the FWL. As for the mech itself, it's a great call-out to the OG design days. Firepower is balanced like a nutritious breakfast, armor is good for its weight class, and it can jump, all bases covered. Yeah, I'd like to run one sometime.

The real secret of the Anzu? While it was named the director general sneezed, and his underlings were too polite to ask if that's what he meant. On a more serious note, a very neat machine. It reminds me of a thunderbolt SE that is a little lighter and relies on an autocannon rather than a LL or full sized PPC to punch through. Its just a good workhorse for its time that doesn't break the bank to include clan tech.

It's a Summoner-Lite! That's why I like the look. EDIT EDIT: I like it alot. Reminds of a Zeus-works GREAT in numbers. But I cant shake the feeling that the Anzu would be GREAT in an earlier era but might be slightly outclassed post 3060. Dont get me wrong! That is still an AC/10 and a PPC (well...kinda) for some punch and a little support with the LRM 10. But the single med laser and tag make me kinda wonder. Feels like maybe ditch those for a bit more armor. Given its low speed and generalist nature (I.E. gonna have to fight in the lines) feels like it needs some more thickness. Still, not shabby! Thanks for sharing!

I’m not going to have as much to say here sadly because we’re starting to drift into this inner sphere advanced tech stuff that I’m not all that used to. That being said I have some experience with the Anzu, my families mercenary unit served alongside a few of them when we were playing musical factions during the Civil War. Overall they are good machines and impressive. They arnt like a lot of modern battlemechs where they try to be either super good at one thing or they are so full of tech they trying to be good at everything. They are a solid trooper mech that was designed to be relatively affordable, by great house standards, and could be built in mass. They arnt the greatest one on one fighters but they work well together and more than good enough. Which is exactly what the FWL needed during the civil wars and invasions of the time period. Also the design is slick and I appreciate anything that can equip the life support systems of the Shadow Hawk, that is a life saver on long missions or on marginal worlds out in the Periphery. Part of the reason why I like it is that I see a lot of the Thunderbolt in it, and that’s a mech I truly love.

I like this guy a lot. Great armaments, jump jets… my kind of mech. TAG is a plus, too. I don’t know that it needs the PPC, personally. I’d likely remove that and add armour and heat sinks. The missiles and UAC are enough for me. That, or focus the weight on the energy loadout. I like it, but I think it tries to cover all the bases thinly rather than focussing on one or two strengths (having it as an energy/SRM brawler using the TAG to enhance its lancemate’s firepower spring to mind, as does using it as a heavy-duty shadowhawk and ripping an enemy’s armour off with volleys of autocannon fire and missile bombardment). But despite my misgivings about unfocussed ‘mechs, I do still like this one. Lots of potential, and on a good-looking frame, to boot.
@BigRed40TECH2 жыл бұрын
It's a great machine imo. I do think the PPC is the weakest link as well, I think it should be flipped out for another medium laser, and then put the rest of into armour and heat sinks, but even with that said it's still very solid. :)

The Anzu is a very solid soldier mech. Make the most of the engine's built in heat sinks. I'm a little disappointed by the use of a Light PPC and a PPC capacitor to boost it. That is a 5 point heat burden to make your light PPC function like a regular PPC. The only bright spot about the capacitor in this case it you can stop using the capacitor once your opponent gets into range for the ER medium laser to take its place. If I could design a variant for the 3098 Anzu I'd rip out the UAC/10 and its 3 tons of ammo, the Light PPC and its Capacitor and the ER M laser. In their place put in a RAC/5, 4 tons of ammo and an old fashioned PPC. This means the pilot needs to think about how much ammo to spend on each shot, but I think this design is slightly more dangerous at range and just as lethal at shorter ranges. The RAC5 with 4 tons is about as ammo efficient as the UAC/10 with 3 tons and heat is easier to control. Alternatively, you could give the RAC/5 only 3 tons of ammo and keep the ER medium laser, if you like having a heat problem. This make the variant less ammo dependent, but the added heat and cut down potential for the RAC/5 make this less ideal in my mind.
@BigRed40TECH2 жыл бұрын
The alternative design has an RAC5 :P
@Chris_Sizemore2 жыл бұрын
@@BigRed40TECH The J70 feels more like a close range brawler variant. The MML and SPPC kind of cement that idea. Mine was more of an attempt to make the long range fire more stable without sacrificing too much functionality, and switching the UAC/10 to a RAC/5 was a very easy change. The RAC/5 is the most efficient AC in battletech right now, which means its so tempting to abuse it when you have an opportunity.

Military development does tend to suffer when the galactic economy stagnates and goes into extreme decentralization after entire worlds get nuked into uselessness. Imagine trying to run Iowa with only domestic US oil production, which also has to fuel all of the USA while avoiding the radioactive holes in the ground that used to be Austin, Houston, and Muskogee. Old Ironsides is wind-powered, very sustainable! Just swap all the muzzle-loaders for a Tomahawk launcher and a CIWS unit or two, and the old lady is ready to go. Hmmm, maybe the better historical model is the Late Roman cataphract/clibanarius versus the Norman miles. Six hundred years' difference, but they're almost the same in technology and battlefield use.
@johnfisher96922 жыл бұрын
@@observationsfromthebunker9639 You're getting the scale all wrong. There are thousands of worlds in the Inner Sphere and not all could be 'nuked'. I doubt Lutien or New Avalon was, or had there schools smashed. In your example it would be more like the US losing its war making and research capability if a few small towns were wrecked. And let's not forget the Golden Age of the Star League where Tech (apart from military) expanded massively. Look at out technological advances in just the last century. Technology 'breeds' more technology. Not saying I done like the game but it's this stagnation which strikes me as wrong.A Tudor era ship would stand no chance against HMS Victory.

It's more related to the Thunderbolt, which is another mech Earthwerks makes.

Glory to Marik!

Marik has a literal Hammer too. Light 'Mech with medium lasers and 2 LRM 5. Supposedly paired up with Anvil. Meh, I'd rather have Trebuchet instead.
@BigRed40TECH2 жыл бұрын
The Hammer's pretty awful, and has been forgotten by history for a reason. Anvil's not good either. lol

The Anzu is with its central cockpit is pretty much what i wish the Thunderbolt and Summoner would look like. I hate when the cockpit is not centered, it makes the control of a supposedly so powerful, difficult to control unit like a battlemech even more difficult. Which is BAD DESIGN, it only confuses the pilot, taking away from the idea of the mech imitating the human body.

I absolutely love the Anzu. :)

One of my favorite things about the tbolt and summoner is the asymmetrical cockpit. I've never had any issues piloting them as a result. You drive a car from one side right?
@sim.frischh97812 жыл бұрын
@@andrewboyer7544 Motorbike driver here... And i already made that point: the mech is much more complex than a car. The entire point of making the mech humanoid in the first place is to imitate the human form. Don´t know about you, but MY head is centered.
@andrewboyer75442 жыл бұрын
@@sim.frischh9781 the main point of the mechs isn't being humanoid its locomotion. The stalker is hardly human. There are quadruped mechs too. Not sure where you get the human thing from. Doesn't matter if you drive a bike, most people don't. Hell, bikes with side cars are not centered. Most people don't drive from the center cause it's not hard. You're just making stuff up because you don't like the way it looks. It's not any more difficult to pilot and it isn't a bad design choice. You just don't like it, which is fine. No reason to try and elevate it beyond that. You don't even pilot a mech with a vr suit or something, you drive them like a vehicle so it's far more like a tank or a car than moving your own body.

@@BigRed40TECH I doubt it, im a mechwarrior4 player and i got into the lore, After reading the first few DA novels it almost made my almost complete second hand cbt novel collection worthless to me because it culminated in DA :) You could compare it to the final season of GoT making rewatching the series painful for some of the hardcore fans because it started out so promising :) _edit but they might have saved the lore later on in DA or Iclan era.

Another kitchen-sink mech design from the "modern" battle tech era. To me BattleTech ends with the TRO 3067. Everything beyond that date just isn´t fun to play any longer.
@BigRed40TECH2 жыл бұрын
That's a shame, honestly I think 3067 is some of the weakest stuff from BT in terms of designs, the Fedcom civil war never really did much for me narratively, or gameplay wise. I actually prefer the latter-Dark Age era, to the FCCW. :\
