Up next, Psychedelics: The scientific renaissance of mind-altering drugs
► • Psychedelics: The scie...
A pattern emerges when you compare the harmfulness of different types of psychoactive drugs: alcohol and hard drugs like heroin and crack cocaine rank as the most harmful, while psychedelic substances like psilocybin and LSD score as the least harmful.
It’s perhaps not too surprising. After all, psychedelic substances are generally non-toxic and medically safe to consume. The drugs do not come with the same kind of overdose risks that substances like alcohol and heroin do.
Still, psychedelics can have profound effects on the psyche. Bad trips are a real phenomenon. But bad trips are sometimes the result of an interplay between the drugs and the user’s environment. As explained by Dr. Matthew W. Johnson, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Johns Hopkins, the conditions under which someone experiences psychedelics can significantly influence the trip - for the worse or the better.

I did shrooms pretty quickly after their decriminalization here in Colorado, and oh man. It was hugely bittersweet, but it was a profound spiritual experience I needed to have. Ever since then, I feel love I think for the first time in my whole life, im so present and aware of myself and my boundaries and I take a lot less shit from life and from people. I no longer worry about things from my past, I feel like I restored a piece of myself that has been missing for a very long time. I absolutely advocate for veteran and autism mushroom therapy Postscript; If you take a psychedelic and your world view and self image is starting to change drastically and indefinitely, just relax. Where do you think ancestral stories of mythical creatures came about? You aren't going crazy, only experiencing different degrees of mind you have always had and that have been estranged from you by a set of circumstances in the world, you will always be okay 💜

I am not spiritual at all, but after taking shrooms a few months ago I am much happier and am highly motivated, lost a ton of anxiousness, and had a few epiphanies about how I should live my life. I decided to buy an entire ounce for backup, but haven't yet felt the need to take any more since then. It was fun and weird, then scary, then eye opening and beautiful.

Eek, why autism? I mean, I’m autistic and I *maybe sorta might* want to try them, but are you saying it to un-autism people? Because honestly if so, that’s wide scale abuse in that it aims to eliminate an entire group of people, kinda just because they’re disabled.

I wish they were readily available in my place. Microdosing was my next plan of care for my husband. He is 59 & has so many mental health issues plus probable CTE & a TBI that left him in a coma 8 days. It's too late now I had to get a TPO as he's 6'6 300+ pound homicidal maniac. He's constantly talking about killing someone. He's violent. Anyone reading this Familiar w/ BPD know if it is common for an obsession with violence.

From my experience it really works excellently! It doesnt even need to be a full hit. With potent shrooms 2-3 small ones will still make a clear difference. It will be a few hour cosy rumbling moment around rest time, but afterwards its just calm and you feel amazing and gain your freedom. Psilocybin is different dudes, its the only "treatment" I would recommend to someone who genuinely wants to get better. There is no addiction, withdrawal, or negative side effects. It's just pure healing., far more effective than any anti-depressant. You can thank me later

I was noписапу чepressed since childhood. It was relentless. I assumed it would ultimately end me somehow. About twelve years ago I randomly accepted the offer from a friend of a few doses of mushrooms. I did them two consecutive nights alone. First night was pretty mild. The second night? Wow. I saw my depression from every angle, realized much. Next day: depression totally gone. Never came back, never coming back. It's like it's a forest far away I can remember, and could probably find again with enough effort, but it has zero impact on anything in my life or mind. They honestly saved my life and improved it immensely. I never did them again, either. I wish there was a good, organized way to administer them to people who would benefit from them.

LSD and mushrooms completely changed my whole outlook on life..I became a better version of myself. This experience gave me a lot of confidence about myself and a bunch of bad thought/behaviour pattern were broken. One of these was pretty bad OCD that made me wash my hands alot..it gave me a lot of hope that things will be fine, this is the one thing that I heard throughout the trip. The main reason for the trip was my severe Depression and it definitely helped me. Before all I could do was lay in bed, now I am trying to rebuild my life one step at a time which wasn't possible before.

All trauma has been dissolved before my very eyes. I understood what love and understanding truly meant and 9 months on, I've never experienced any of the depression and anxiety that plagued my existence beforehand. I saw every path that everyone had ever taken and why. It is the most profound experience of my life. Just my experience.

The key word when it comes to these substances is respect. Even though the risk of actual harm is very low, they should be treated with the respect they deserve, since psychedelics are powerful stuff. If one uses them without respect, it"s only a matter of time before they will teach you a harsh lesson. Used respectfully though, they are capable of a lot of good.

As an academic in psychology, I can say that there's extensive research on the negative psychological effects of LSD. An example is that it can worsen a mental disorder when the person goes on a bad trip. I'm not against LSD. I just think that such important points need to be covered in this video as this could influence a lot of individuals. Cover both the good and the bad, especially the mental implications.

I SUPPOSE you just learned certain things theoretically, but you never tried, lsd, shrooms, DMT. It's all about how you do these things...You have to start with small doses, in a favorable environment. And certain people after having a bad trip they get scared, stop taking that substance and then they categorize it as dangerous. But it can only be a stage during the entire journey, maybe you need that bad trip.

I think it needs to be emphasized that psychedelics aren’t “fun” if you’re using them to treat mental issues though. I took 4g of shrooms by myself for my first trip, horrifying experience that ended up also being extremely cathartic. They can be really beneficial, but if someone thinks they’re gonna blast off to have fun AND come out the other end cured if depression, I think they’ll have a bad time.

There's a saying in the psychedelic community that you don't always get what you want from psychedelics, but you always get what you need. The bad experiences are usually to do with unaddressed issues, beliefs or biases that a person has locked away in their psyche and in the right set and setting, psychedelics force that hand and open the locked door. The majority of the time, the experience is breath-taking. There simply aren't words to accurately describe what the world is like on these compounds. They really are life-changing and life-affirming.

Very true! I was on an acid binge for awhile and then decided to go back, and do some mushrooms. Little did I know my acid use had for some reason effected my bodies relationship with mushrooms, and I had my first real "bad" trip. Wasn't even bad but I had a super heavy anxiety "elevator" feel. Tried making myself puke up everything I ate until I realized: Hey dumbass you're already high.. your body digested it already. Just ride it out and quit for awhile. Because of that trip.. I cut back on acid, and probably saved myself some trouble. LISTEN TO YOUR BODY! I've done some doses of mda that shouldve killed me. I went deep in the party drugs, and I don't brag but I say it because it's not how you should use things of any kind really. Learned to appreciate the gift that is the high.. instead of just riding that shit like a wild beast. Watching friends leave their body enough times kinda makes ya wanna stop also... o.O

I’ve had a wide variety of experience with psychedelics, the most intense ones with LSD, also good and bad. My last trip was on mushrooms and somehow I really understood how stupid and impulsive it was to grab that cigarette in that moment after smoking many during the trip. One month after that, I also stopped watching porn, stopped eating sweets, started going to the gym, stopped playing video games and basically changed my whole life. It was just that one thought about impulsivity that changed my life… It sounds really crazy to me when I think about it…

There's a very good book titled, "The Cult Of Pharmacology" by Dr. Richard DeGrandpre. He's a PhD psychopharmacologist from Duke University, and I think he marketed the book in 2006. Moreover, the concept of "exteroceptive stimulus" and how it affects the brain is pretty complex. A bad trip can have lingering results that are not chemical in nature, even though chemicals are responsible for the sensation. It's a perceived trauma (like witnessing a murder at a young age). Young people hear only the benefits of Ayahuasca and ignore the fact that the trip can be so anxiogenic that the only way to escape it is to commit suicide! L/R

As someone who has had more bad trips (high anxiety; “thinking too much”) than “fun” trips, I still learned something each time. For me it was often a learning experience in which I learned about myself, about my own flaws that sober me avoided like the plague. Psychidelics showed me the true meaningless of my individual life, while simultaneously showing me the true beauty of life itself. Without mushrooms and LSD I don’t think I would have ever been interested in philosophy. It’s interesting when you look into the dark abyss and come out inspired by the light, by the universes insane ability to turn black space into living, breathing organisms.

Having just done my first trip yesterday on mushrooms, I can say it was proberly one of the top 5 things I've done in my 45 years of life. I went down to a river and sat on its banks with my brother and a good friend who's done it before and we had a SMALL dose and slowly increased it until it was enough for each of us. Make sure you are in a place where you feel safe and in nature where no body is gonna interrupt your time. Remind yourself you in control and everything is going to be OK. Don't do the mother load and expect to handle it off the bat! My mental clarity is tops in fact it's motivated me to do stuff in my life that I was confused and grappling with. I feel I was lied to about this stuff my whole life and always thought if I did it I might just jump off a building Casue I though I could fly. Nothing could be further from the truth!

He has gotten various amount of psychiatric diagnosis like: HPPD (Hallucinogen Persisting Perception Disorder), Panic Disorder and Depression. He was in a safe environment, around people he trusted and felt comfortable going into it. It only needed ONE bad trip to cause this to him. I think he suffered from this for 4 years now and it only now has gotten a bit better... There are risks that aren't always presented in the public; thus it cannot be added into statistics. Taking LSD was one of the best and most therapeutic decisions I have ever made in my life. I've had a lot of trauma happen throughout my childhood, both my parents nearly died in a motorcycle accident in 2011 which resulted in my mother having severe head trauma and mental illnesses such as clinical depression, psychosis, insomnia, mania, bipolar disorder, the list goes on.. quite literally at one point believing she was possessed by the devil, bare in mind I was 9 years old when this was happening. I still don't have a proper relationship with my mother and I haven't since I was 13 years old - I am now 19. My entire direct family has been partially broken for nearly a decade from the aftermath of the crash. My half brother also died 5 years ago which happened just as things were starting to improve with my mum. Since then I've had a mixed was beautiful. It genuinely felt like all the anxiety, pain and trauma I had been through in my life was lifted from my shoulders. To this day I still believe it was more beneficial to my mental health then any therapy I have had to date. It felt like I was being enlightened and I had found the answer to life. Since then I have made a complete upheaval in positive changes to my life. Working out 3-5x a week nearly every week throughout 2022. I gained my confidence back and not once since taking my first tab have I genuinely contemplated suicide or felt depressed to the level I did throughout the years before acid. I achieved satisfactory grades in my end of year college exams and now I'm on a gap year, still exploring my options and I'm truly grateful to be relationship with my mental health but in December 2020 after an incident with a girl that put me in a spiral of depression and self guilt I nearly took my own life and I was still deeply suicidal and depressed until June 2021. After that period fortunately I was slowly getting better and in November 2021 i took my first tab of acid. The experience was beautiful. It genuinely felt like all the grades in my end of year college exams and now I'm on a gap year, still exploring my options and I'm truly grateful to be alive. I have also tripped 3 times since last year. Each time more potent than the other and all uniquely beneficial. I understand that these ‘drugs' aren't for everyone, but when used correctly, the right ones, in my case psychedelics, have been extremely beneficial to my life. I am so glad to have discovered the positive side effects of psychedelics while I’m still young. Just thought I’d share my own experience with you. Have a nice day :) 🪬

I've done LSD and shrooms several times. I love to periodically do them. They sort of give you a mind-reset because you see things differently. Sometimes things don't make sense, the euphoria is unparalleled and visual distortions just make you appreciate a lot of things about how your mind works. I'm still going on well with my life and will definitely have so many more trips as long as I can. I strongly advocate for medical professionals to learn this substance and create evidence based treatment paths for it. I cannot recommend shrooms for recreational use. It was an extreme ride, that I do believe most people will be fine by the end, and I believe I was; but the experience was incredibly intense, and even eight months after the fact I still don’t know if it was entirely beneficial to have gone through it. Very balanced and informed video. I think it’s right to say psychedelics have absolutely profound and promising benefits (I can say that from my own personal experience). But we cannot be ignorant to the negatives as well. As we see this renaissance of psychedelics, we have to create an environment of education before use. Regardless of if you’re using it to find yourself or just have a good time. Understanding these substances, and using them in a healthy manner should be paramount.

First ever experience with psychedelics was in college with a couple of my closest friends from childhood. Each dropped a 200µg LSD blotter in one of their parents' lakehouse while they were away for the weekend. One of the most magical experiences of my life. Aphex's 85-92 ambient works and Deep Forest playing throughout the entire house, plenty of space to mosey around and relax while enjoying the experience, brought tons of things to do and games to play (though we didn't get to many of them, haha!), surrounded by nature everywhere, just amazing in every aspect. I'll never forget all of us discussing what style of patterns we were seeing; I remember mine being distinctly Shipibo. Only downside is for a couple months following the experience, I had roughly 10-12 nights where I would wake with severe "sleep drunkenness". I would wake up in the middle of the night completely and utterly disoriented, no clue where I was, who I was, or what was going on. After 20 or 30 seconds my brain would kind of "zap" out of it and realize I was completely safe in my dorm, but pretty scary nonetheless. Just goes to show how powerful of an impact these substances have on your brain chemistry. They can precipitate states of deep understanding and compassion for the universe and the entities surrounding you, and can assist with truly transformative personal, inner growth. @@joseph-mariopelerin7028 That makes it even more important that we are researching more on the substances today. And it's also important to promote safe use with lower dosages, being in a safe space and with a safe person who can trip sit for you. Also doing exstensive research yourself beforehand not only about the substance you are going to ingest, but also your family history with diseases like psychosis or schizo to minimise risk. Science so far shows that following proper steps towards safer use lowers the risk of bad stuff happening significantly. However you are wise to mention that it can always come and bite you in the ass, if misused, of course.

I had a couple friends back in the '70s that REALLY pushed the envelope, taking huge amounts of LSD. When they were done with the long 'experiment' (for lack of a better term) one turned out pretty much normal, although much more quiet and reserved than he was before the journey. But the other one is GONE. He slowly wanders around the streets in his own world, just looking looking and not interacting with anybody. Completely lost.

Shrooms have helped me over come a terrible panic disorder and so many other things that I tend to push aside and not think about. I taught myself how to calm down during anxiety and panic attacks, how to be comfortable being by myself and why it’s so important to be comfortable by myself. The biggest lesson, “this too shall pass”. The trips can be a little scary, but I learned to be comfortable with the uncomfortable and wait for those moments to pass. I was comforted knowing this wouldn’t be my permanent state of mind. Now I do the same for my anxiety.

And of course there is another danger of people taking psychedelics without awareness of their perhaps latent psychological disorders which could have been passed from their relatives genetically which can result in exacerbation or activation of those disorders and could end up going full blown schizo after one trip, there are plenty cases of these things happening and in my own experience i had a bad trip on LSD my 2nd time on only 200ug and since then i feel like i've never fully came back the way i was before it and its been 8 years now, not to mention that first couple years were pure living hell. And just to make it clear im not against psychedelics i believe they have invaluable place in our psychological healthcare and exploring our own, heck even reality's true nature, but these things are incredibly powerful so have to be done in controlled environments and with full assessment of ones psychological state as well as disorders that may run in a family.

I’m a huge advocate of psychedelics and this narrative is becoming weird, toxic, misguided and just plain dumb. Psychedelics can make you crazy. That’s a thing. Some people don’t come back. Some people get “dinged” up and never quite feel the same. Bad things happen to good people. Comparing this to alcohol or tobacco or other psycho active compounds doesn’t take into effect the real possibility that major dangers lurk when exploring your psyche as psychedelics tend to open up. We need to grow up and be real about this. It’s a danger not inherent to other compounds like alcohol. Get real. Discuss the real danger everyone knows is there. And this narrative that oh it’s just people w underlying conditions is aborhent as well, stigmatizing those w those conditions and assuming most don’t have a trap door of vulnerability.

I totally agree with you but alcohol is legitimately more dangerous than shrooms in just about every other way, and the ways alcohol is dangerous are much more common than the ways shrooms can be dangerous. If you factor in the risk for alcoholism, violence (as both a victim and a perp), the physical harm it does to your body and the various other ways you’re likely to fuck your life up while drunk, it seems a bit silly to be casual about drinking while being super apprehensive about doing a couple grams of shrooms in a good set and setting.

i tried shrooms the first time a few months ago and ended up doing shrooms 4 times in the one month. i've dealt with things like major depression, dissociation, anxiety, and bpd my whole life but for once i felt a semblance of happiness. the first times it changed my perspective and i felt like a better person, i cared more, i felt love, i appreciated the world around me and the things i had in life. on my fourth time, i had my first bad trip that traumatized me. a month later i was completely sober and physically relived the bad trip after discussing it for too long, the effects it can have on your psyche is scary. i developed panic attacks, my anxiety was severely worse, and i couldn't even hear the word shrooms without my chest tightening, my head spinning, and my stomach sinking. as a person whose always had a hard time identifying with themselves, experiencing ego death amongst the psychosis and paranoia and other crazy shit i was feeling on the bad trip, it was really difficult to ground myself to reality for a while afterwards. i do still struggle with feeling unreal. the only thing i can do is try to spin this positively, i am grateful i had a bad trip because now i understand the dangers and won't take it so irresponsibly, and having ego death might be a way for me to reset and take a look at myself from the outside and connect with myself.

I did shrooms multiple times and the anxiety that I experienced during every single trip was like nothing I’ve ever experienced. I’m aware that your trip depends on your mood and environment and each time I was in a good mood and comfortable environment, It was so overwhelming that I really felt like my life was over, it was honestly horrifying and it has had lasting effects on my life. However my experiences with lsd have been the complete opposite. I believe that some people just can’t handle psilocybin.

Russell Howard was *allowed* to do an episode recently promoting decriminalisation, making various *economic* arguments for it. Conservatives don't respond how their opponents want to 'I want' 'you're mean' etc. They see it as sulky teenagers attempting emotional blackmail. You need to present a case that totally bursts their bubbles. If people translate their opinions into their language, we'll all have a better time. National Security by X, Prestige and Sovereignty by Y, and of course their favourite word 'greater *efficiency* if we do Z'. Having said that, fungi can be incredibly dangerous. Death Caps are called that for a reason. There is at time of writing, no antidote to Amatoxin. Many more mushrooms can be as lethal too. If you're very, very lucky after eating one of these, or even just a smallish fraction well.. You're getting a lung, liver and kidney transplant. If not oh dear indeed.

Only the chosen one's can speak to gods. I've taken 6 grams of psilocybin and have been able to speak to these beings. Entities exist within DMT realm as well, but these beings aren't in physical form, they communicate through your thoughts and no, it's not your conscious or something you created. You're aware of conscious thoughts, but on psilocybin you have no control and you are able to respond within your own mind as yourself with someone else being there talking with you. Some could argue that is some link to schizophrenia, but if that were even remotely true, it would bleed into my life when I'm sober... which it never has. Don't trust these satanic "scientists" they are bought by billionaires to disrupt your spirituality and normalize evil. You see it all around you with these child groomers and transgender read along events. Stay true to your beliefs and tune out of people like this guy on the video, he's evil like the rest of them.

I have taken a small amount of LSD every weekend for about 3 years. In small amounts like half a tab it can give you unmatched gratitude, perspective and empathy for others. It can show you what you need to see within yourself and in the world around you. Through one trip that i guided her through for only about an hour i was able to completely eliminate my girlfriends pot of 10+ years addiction. Music is absolute magic to me and i make $150,000 a year at the moment flipping cars and working my full time job here in sydney. In small amounts it is absolutely incredible. However in large amounts it can make you a hippy, who is just an unproductive member of society, outcasted and a drug addict. I hate that acidheads give LSD such a bad name.

I feel the need to put awareness out there. Yes, in most cases shrooms are way safer than pretty much every other drug/alcohol. My brother went to rehab this last year and was diagnosed with ‘drug induced psychosis.’ He had lost touch with reality. It felt like my brother wasn’t there. It was awful. In some cases, this happens. So always be weary of drugs and consult doctors/professionals to prevent risk.

How could you not talk about HPPD in this entire video? Me and thousands of others have a condition known as hallucinogen persisting perception disorder (HPPD). It can be debilitating, and for many of us will never live the lives we used to and some are nearly disabled.

I loved psychedelics and found great benefit in using them, but have not touched them in years due to my unrelenting mild hallucinations. It gets really bad in the dark, to the point that I don’t like being in darkness. It also gets worse during periods of stress. It is a difficult thing but I do my best to get by. You can say theyre safe all you want, but psychedelics are extremely powerful, and shouldnt be taken lightly. The distortion to your concious experience goes far beyond visual hallucinations. Youll smell things you havent smelled since childhood, you can forget everything. Your name, your friends, where you live, its intense. A bad trip isnt just scary visuals. Youll feel the worst depression you could ever imagine, head splitting sadness. A good trip can be just as scary. You can be elevated to a euphoria so high that youll never want to leave. Imagine your whole body buzzing with pure happiness, every sensation you can sense sending you to pure bliss, its incredible! Despite psychedelics' non addictive nature, you may find yourself trying to chase that high the rest of your life. Know that there is a price for every high, and no drug is above that. Psychedelics are scary

There's one thing that I'd like to add: Psychadellics may be psychically addictive, I know a few people who have done like >10 trips per month, and I went to share their reports: "Yea, I know that I crossed safe dosage and period, but man, each time it was for a purpose. I just got to the point in my life when I can afford being high often and honestly, I'm enjoying it. Each trip is different plan. We went hiking, cycling, swimming through various places in nature, it actually helped me to get to this point from nothing that I had, this substance just showed me at my worst how good you can feel, and actually my first trip gave me mind reset and positive kick for start of my new life..."

Psychedelics aren't addictive and they're not non-addictive either. They're *anti* addictive. "Psychedelic addiction" is a complete oxymoron. It's not 'rare', it's literally impossible. Also what kind of "addict" can regulate their drug addiction to only 10 times a month? Maybe you should take your fiction writing to a different platform. It's obvious you made those quotes up. Like painfully visibly obvious. It's like you're not even trying.

@@graveraider1029 Who? The made-up people/person(s) in OP's characteristically odd, but also fake anecdotes? Or just some other hypothetical "users" which also don't even actually exist.. Nobody is going to take a valueless negative experience and romanticize it or pretend it was perfectly fine and cognizantly restorative and all that just because of some imaginary social dynamics that you just interjected into it randomly without any real concern for the scope of its veracity. The fact is, that even within these acutely negative trips and experiences, it's abnormally rare and uncommon for even these exceptionally negative trips not to confer benefits. It's oftentimes, for better or worse; nearly always the "worst" trips which have the most reward and potential for edification. That's not a talking point, that's just an observed phenomenon. Why do you have a problem with that? There's plenty you can still "attack" about or 'go after' psychedelics for or w/e without literally resorting to pointblank lying or making stuff up. Why can't you just rationally criticize the prospect of negativity during experiences anyways? Why do you also somehow *need* the negative experiences to be void of benefits? We both know that's not how that works and such pointless "shortcuts" in argumentative logic only raises more questions than answers. The real question or concern here should just be focused on why you seem to 'need' psychedelics to lack value in order for your perspective to be asserted? Why invest in a "side" to an argument that seems to only ignore other basic knowable facts? Shouldn't you be more concerned with being accurate and correct in your assessment rather than just being a cheerleader for whatever idea best outlines your worldview generally. It's like yeah.. if people actually gaslit themselves into believing a negative valueless experience actually had value despite the obvious then it would be worth noting. Yet.... people simply put; do not do this in the context of psychedelics soo... what's even your point?

Yeah, you damaged your amygdala system which is connected to dopamine. The psychedelics limit the dopamine, which allows you to tap into the serotonin system (two different systems). I would suggest meditation, and increasing your sugar intake--as this fights against the cortisol connected with your anxiety.

I tripped out on WAY too much weed in 2006 and did everything wrong with set and setting, plus I had OCD. I had no sober guide. I went absolutely crazy and ended up in the hospital. Then I got depersonalization disorder. It _really_ fucked me up. I almost committed suicide from sheer terror in the next few months. I still would have completely recovered in about five years if my - former - doctor hooked me on narcotics in 2007. Here I am in 2023, still dependent on narcotics, with an undigested psychedelic trip lodged in my mind, having had hundreds of panic attacks. But it was the reckless overprescription of narcotics by a lazy and incompetent doctor that did most of the damage and has so far prevented me from processing that trip. Thanks, doc. Asshole. Got his ass in a lot of trouble with our medical board, at least. The irony is that psychedelics have since helped me to recover somewhat from all that trauma. Just be careful, everyone, and you'll be fine.
