BCRy Part IV. Here it is! The second episode of the Blackjack Mine build for my On18 Bandit Canyon Railway project. This time around, I build a steam powered hoist for the mine with all of the machinery visible in an open air shed. Plus weathering, final details, lighting, and a scenicked base for the entire complex that blends right into Bandit Canyon.
Thanks for watching, amigos!

Another great example of a "scene" in the whole production. It's amazing how it's basically a diorama that slides right in.

Heat shrink tubing for pipe fittings is ingenious, I will definitely steal this technique! Brass fittings get pricey when there are so many other parts we "need".

Howdy Dave, While watching Pt.1 I started to ponder HOW COULD I STEAL THIS BUILD FOR MYSELF. The following Monday I was flying, not Southwest, to a Winter Thaw Vacation here in Hawaii. While in flight I thought I could copycat and enhance the BLACKJACK MINE and make it mine. BTW the movie TOP GUN: MAVERICK tanked. So when I return to Upstate N.Y. I considering take your Wild West Mine and revamping it into a So. Carolina Coal Mine, circa 1945 - 1965. The structure should fit the era and place? I HOPE! Most of my concept is a direct ripoff of your's. My animation will include a working hoist run by an under roadbed weight, with a IR block detector, an extra servo motor, and a Raspberry Pi as a controller. That will be triggered by a track magnet switch. Then I'm thinking of installing a smoke chamber to puff vapes from the steam chamber. Lastly, back in 2020, I built some waste wood crates. They are still in my someday bin. So I thinking of stealing your flicker lights. Place the lights inside the box and cut some subtle holes for the flicker to shine through. Stain and paint the boxes with "TNT". If I have spare sound card somewhere I may even add an explosion sound, cued by either the Raspberry Pi or the exiting magnetic block detector. But right now!!! Another MiTi on the rocks. SO THANK YOU not just for the idea, but to REMEMBER THE DAMN WATER TOWER. A mistake I won't make.😂🤣 Aloha🍍🍾🥂🏄🚣🏊🧜⛰️🏝️🌈🏖️🌋. NOT 🌫️☃️⛄. Jim from N.Y. soon

Black Jack Mine is a beautiful work of Art. And the Bandit Canyon Railway Series is a very interesting series that I am enjoying very much. I really appreciate and relate to your Modeling Philosophy and attention to detail. Thank you, Dave.

Another great project Dave. May I suggest a spark arrestor for the stack on the boiler. With a tarpaper roof, there may be a problem with sparks. 🧨

Part of being a good modeler, or craftsman, is learning how to hide or fix your mistakes. I do woodworking and I have built hutches etc where Ive made major mistakes, but they are covered. I know they are there but you will never find them.

I'm taking notes on every step of the way. Only thing I hope to add (besides a lot of weathering) is animation. Would love to see the hoist moving. I've already messaged with Heath (Human(c)ity Junction) about how to do this on the cheap.

The Crow River parts are very good, but they don't lend themselves to animation. If I did this type of project again for another mine, I would scracthbuild most of the steam engine components from styrene shapes, building it with animation in mind. The gears would need to be laser cut or 3-D printed.

Spot on Dave. That's just what I'm focusing on. My current problem is being about 3,000 miles from home with just a tablet. Since I wrote above a fellow Gandy Dancer reminded me that Amherst Train Show is January 28 & 29 so the Vaca maybe cut short. Lynn, Dave is absolutely correct. The gears especially need to be 3D printed. And the load MUST be weighted. Not on a tension or spring device. Also if you don't wish to to write computer script or code, you can just add a plunger switch to your facia to trigger the motor. There is an old Lionel method. That is to wind your pulley string over and around your pulleys down into your mine shaft. Through or below you roadbed. I would steal Dave's idea of using a straw as a channel. Loop the string around a hidden pulley motor and back up to viewing location. Aloha 🏝️🏖️🍍🌴🍾🥂🧜 Jim soon returning to N.Y. (by way of Amherst, MA)

Very nice model. Assembling white metal kits with cyano offers the possibility to take them apart with a night in an acetone bath; you can rebuild like new after that. But hopefully, you were able to do the save more easily.

Hi Dave This has turned into a nice little scene is the man over in the rocks a guard, or checking things out to see if he can make a forceful improvement in his financial position. I am wondering if the boiler fuel should really be 2' long the same as locomotive fuel.

Love the mine, I was wondering if you have used wet or dry sand paper for rolled roofing. The grit would give a “ new roof” the mineral “ glitter” I remember from when my dad recovered a roof on an old shed we acquired when I was small.

Good, old school modeling! This kind of content is nearly impossible to find now! Very nice job of combining many different elements to create a pleasing and convincing model of a typical southwestern mine! The only “displeasing” item: All the critical comments from recliner based modelers! It’s the illusion of an operating mine from back in the day, not an engineering study! Kudos Sir! A job well done!

As much as I like your model-building skills, my PTSD for detail and realism has overcome that. 1. The hoist engine needs to be a 2-cylinder engine with the crank pins at 90* (like on a locomotive) to be able to start and run from any position. It also needs to have 2 eccentrics for each cylinder to be able to run in either direction. 2. The winding drum needs to have one end larger for the brake bands or shoes to be able to hold the drum and thus the cage where it is wanted. 3. The braces for the headframe wheel need to be as close to the wheel shaft as possible to take the load the cable will put on braces and very close to parallel to the hoist cable from the drum. 4. Where is the water barrel or storage to supply the boiler with water? In this situation, the engine could be mounted vertically and geared to the hoisting drum. If you would like to make modifications, I would gladly make some sketches for you. You are correct about a single-cylinder engine needing a flywheel but it should be a lot bigger in diameter. A single-cylinder engine is fine for pumps (air or water) but not to raise or lower people and material. Generally, a single-cylinder engine will only need to run in one direction; I know, traction engines are an exception.
