It’s not always a company standing behind their product lmao.. It’s a numbers game. Hypothetically If you know 20% of your products are faulty, but only 3% get returned, it might be more costly to fix the 20% going out than it is to replace the 3% that people warranty. So no, it’s not always just a matter of standing behind a product because it’s a good one to stand behind.. it might just be cheaper to replace the few warranties than it is to fix the deeper issues..

@ true, however, when I was young, I worked at an auto shop, mechanic syndrome, is a real thing, that’s what we called a situation that happened all the time but the moment you came to the mechanic it went away, to come back immediately after you left, that’s why “unable to duplicate” is so annoying..we won’t know what really happened, that being said we all know some companies would have done nothing, they replaced it.. good.

I would NOT shoot any more of that ammo. More than likely the brass is either too thin or brittle. Federal makes great ammo but every manufacturer has issues from time to time. If it is the ammo, you could have a firearm blow up on you in your face from the pressurized gas escaping through those case cracks. One big warning sign was the case going further into the chamber/barrel, especially with a straight case. I had a Glock 40 cal. blow up on me due to a case head separation. There wasn't much of the handgun left to reuse afterwards, but I was lucky enough to survive unscathed. Scared me to death. Send the remaining ammo with the box to Federal for them to check out. They may send you a new box in return.

This highlights the difference between a cheap gun and a budget friendly gun. Sometimes you will get a “good one” but more often than not… you’ll get a cheap gun with QA issues. I remember when single shots were $60-$80 and you didn’t have any issues with them. My first deer kill in Indiana was with a Steven’s-Savage 16 gauge. My grandpa gave it to my dad when he was 12 and my dad gave it to me when I was 12. Still have it and it works. Those days are long gone my friend.

It does seem to not want to feed the third round ( very specific it will flawlessly feed 1,2, 3 nose dives in the mag but one you correct that it feeds 4 no problem) savage sent me a new magazine that feels like it has more pressure at the front of the follower but haven’t tested it yet. Alternative season is over and next weekend is modern and my .243 comes into play again.

Rossi has a lot of problems. These cheap guns are getting that way by lack of craftsmanship and tolerances. I got a new Mossberg 500 and luckily, I decided to change the choke before checking how is shoots. The choke that was in it, 1/2 was missing, the rest was bent up blocking the barrel. Took it back and bought an old 60's Wingmaster with a full choke barrel. Talked to a dealer a few months ago and he got a Mossberg in that the barrel was split 1/2 it's length, new in the box.

@josephmedeiros57702 ай бұрын
Guess we'll never really know if it was the gun, ammo, or a combination of both. If you still have that ammo, you could try it in a different gun and see if it happens again. Straight walled is pretty forgiving. The chamber would have to be fairly oversized to cause splitting. I would think you'd notice it in a breach loading singke action. My bet is a faulty cartridge casing on the ammo. Something with the annealing of the case after forming. That would cause it to be brittle. Thank God you noticed it. That struck case could've been disastrous. Thanks for the great videos!
@chrisdeterman32472 ай бұрын
I knee jerk reaction when seeing the split cases is that the ammunition was at fault. Perhaps the brass was bad or the load was too hot.

I can tell you this, customer service is the reason why, to this day, I will never buy another Rossi product. Owned a .357 Magnum R92 Stanless Carbine model. Not big on stainless, but never had any issues with it. Still, I sold it on and picked up a .45 Colt Rifle R92. Loaded some snap caps in it to check the action. After racking the lever twice, the action was totally seized up. Turns out the Shell Stop had sheared off and frozen the action. The rifle was completely Deadman-ed without firing it once. I sent it back to Braztech for warranty service. I spent 8 months waiting trying to hear what was going on with my rifle. Bugging them every two months with them telling me they were waiting on parts. It finally came to the point I snapped, asked the girl if she knew the year. 2023. "Are you sure it isn't 1823? I've been waiting on a part I was told was in stock for 8 months and that I could have installed myself!" Issue got escalated to a department head who offered me a rifle of the same price or a refund. I tried arguing for a rifle with 24-inch barrels, but they said, "That wasn't a square deal since it cost more than the rifle I sent in." Then I justified it with sales tax and background check fees. Sent them the receipt to show it but they still held their ground. Finally, I just demanded a refund. I will never buy another Rossi or taurus product so long as I live

@lynncox7602 ай бұрын
I wish you had thought to take it to your smith first and get him to spec out the chamber because there is absolutely no way you would have had concentric splits like that if it was a problem with the ammo. Even a sheet of brass with a weak line wouldn't have split almost exactly the same. ONLY an out of spec chamber would have caused those splits to be so even. Basically, imagine pressing metal with a press and mold. If the mold has a crack and the metal is being pressed to it's limits then it will crack right with the crack in the mold. 50-55k pounds of pressure in a millisecond, especially in a pulse-wave, can cause all kinds of chaos if your chamber is out of spec.

@davidstuck28662 ай бұрын
If you haven't yet, maybe you should contact Federal about the ammunition. You may have a bad lot of ammo. The only time I have had brass split like that is really old 45-70 brass that had been resized and reloaded 15 times. It had just been work hardened from being resized so many times. That can happen at the factory. typically, a peice of brass gets annealed several times during production. And if they forgot to anneal it properly just before it was loaded, that could cause the brass to crack like that.
@lkilkenny94262 ай бұрын
NAILED IT!! The last operation of factory case forming is the final annual of the neck and a short section of the main case body immediately below the neck. For some who may not know, annealing is heating the brass to a designated temperature, to soften it so it can stretch to seal the chamber, rather than splitting due time the extreme pressures of firing.

I’d now contact the ammunition manufacturer and include a copy of the video. I’d maybe also include a copy of Rossi’s reply. It’s entirely possible the brass in the box or entire batch of ammunition is brittle from the manufacturing process or a particular step in the process that was missed or done wrong? Definitely try a few rounds out of that same box of ammunition and see if it does the same thing in this new rifle. Obviously if it does the same thing, it wasn’t the rifle. It was/is a bad batch of ammunition (brass).

I had the same issue with a batch of brand new Lapua .308 brass. Most of the cases split at the neck after the first firing. I load mid range loads for target shooting and none of my other cases had split cases upon the first firing. My guess the brass or heat treatment was off with my batch of Lapua brass. It has not happened since with the Lapua brass. My guess is the issue was with the brass and not the rifle, wrong mix of brass alloy or improper heat treatment.

I have a Rossi 22 mag and it did the same thing. Split the cases 90% of the time and would put a bulge on the side of the case by the primer area. I sent it back to Rossi. They let the FFL know they got it. Said they tested it, said they cleaned it. And told the FFL they couldn't get it to do the same thing. I sent them the bad cases as proof of the problem. They sent it back to my FFL when I got it back it was still dirty and still had the same problem. So, to say the least about Rossi, I'm not impressed. I believe it's the springs in the BCG setup letting the bolt open before the pressure drops to a proper level. Yes, mine is a semi-automatic Rossi. Yet the same issue.

Might be an ammo issue? Try some from your box in the new gun then, try some from a different batch of Federal in the new gun. Bad batch of cases would be my guess thin brass. Try that same lot in another gun

Try different ammo from it to see if it's actually the ammo or not. Also i wish it was mandatory that gun manufacturers have to show a video of 3 test shots if its gone for warranty.

I bought a Rossi survival for my daughter. We tried 4 different types of ammo and it would not group smaller than 6 in at 50 yards. I sent it in under warranty and was told they were replacing barrel. This has been 6 weeks now and haven’t heard back. I was going to to buy the 350 legend just like your, until i watched your video and saw all the same problems I was having with the survival using 45 lc. I even tried shooting the 410 slugs( after changing the choke to shoot gun ) and it still would not group. I hope they get these bugs worked out.

As a reloader I know if you over anneal your case and you actually soften the case body/casehead you'll run into splitting problems. Also, if the brass is stretching more than usual from say the chamber not being within tolerance or if you're oversizing your brass, if it was from being overloaded you would pop the primer before you would split the case, maybe they had some bad brass come through Federal, I just find it funny that they didn't send you the same gun back even though they claimed nothing was wrong with it, I don't know of any other manufacturer that would do that
@sapago41662 ай бұрын
Case splitting typically happens to work hardened brass that has not been properly annealed.
@yabba56962 ай бұрын
@sapago4166 this is clearly not one of those cases buddy, please do your research and make more educated comments, the next thing you know Bob and Jim's going to be annealing to case body because of your comment right here, and hurt somebody or themselves or mess their gun up forever
@yabba56962 ай бұрын
@sapago4166 Yes but it almost always happens when you size it, not when you shoot it, I've reloaded for 26 years and I've never once had a case split after shooting it. I always have them split when I size them, and I've never seen factory ammunition do that.
@yabba56962 ай бұрын
Even a straight wall cartridge will almost always just split at the beginning of the case mouth not the actual case body, and what you're referring to is almost strictly indicative to bottleneck cartridges which that is not

If they couldn’t duplicate the issue ‘WHY WOULDN’T THEY SEND BACK THE ORIGINAL’? Seems fishy! Did they send spent cases or photo/video of their testing? Good luck on next round of testing. I was suspecting it would have been an unsupported, mis-reamed chamber. Your ammo seems good quality, if not they should be contacted about your discovery for their quality control. Best to you!

Sounds like a bad lot of ammo. Can't say I've ever had any problems with Federal, but maybe that was the problem.

There is a head space issue with those any time a case moves further in than it is supposed to

Chamber could've been slightly oversized towards the front bore. Say nothing wrong was found so it doesn't become the loose thread on a sweater. Everyone starts pulling on it. ;D Rossi did right to replace it with a new one for you.

I had a Rossi in .270 and HATED it ! It was so light that the barrel would jump and I could never sight it in ! I took it back to the dealer and got something else.

Without muzzle velocity to get an idea of pressure, it's impossible to make any logical conclusions.

The new gun at range will answer the question. Hope you chronograph those boolets for reference.

I would have doing some measurements before i sent it back. That is a definite chamber failure. It could be the brass but i doubt it. Been tuning up my 350 legends.. last group at the range went a half inch at 200 yards with my loads. I am not fond of Rossi

Hey im pretty sure its the ammo. I bought that same stuff for my 350 and i found and still have 4 rounds that had not been fired with split brass like that. Ive been using the 350 for a few years now and thats the only ammo ive ever seen do this.
@arthurshingler20252 ай бұрын
I've had some good success with these Rossi single shots. I did buy a used one in a 30-06 that had a poor chamber. Excessive headspace and firing pin would not strike the center of the primers (off center). Someday I'll try to send it off to get it fixed. Used guns? Buyer beware!!!

I have a Rossi R92 357 lever in triple black. I did a deburring and polish job on it. It’s smoother and more accurate than my son’s Henry rifles and he has three. The hammers on all three of his Henry’s are wobbly and cheaply made. Very surprised with that.

Could it be the chamber being oversized. Understand headspacing just wondering if chamber had diameter issue.

I don't know how Federal runs the process of manufacturing the cases, but if you still have the cases that split, line them up with the printing on the base all in the same orientation and see if it was the same side of the case on all of them. I doubt you put them in the chamber exactly the same, so if it was always on the same side, I would think Federal had a problem somewhere.
