The 4440 is my favorite John Deere row crop. It was hard to pick 10 from my Archie’s. I just featured the 4440 spreading manure in a video yesterday so I have its spot to the big 2wd 4850 as 2wd 4850s are somewhat rare.

We have a 1975 4030 on our farm. Used to be used for baling in the summer and fall. Sits in the barn now cause we bought a 1997 5520 for a replacement. That 4030 will never be replaced in my heart. That 4030 was the first tractor I ever rode in with my grandpa at the age of 3. Eventually when I take the farm over the 4030 will officially be mine.

4030 is a great tractor. So are the 5000 series, though I don’t believe they made the 5520 until 2001. My 5300 is a 1997.

Made my day watching this video. Dad owned 5-6 of these including a 4230, 4440, 4640 and a 4055. Ridiculously reliable and for that era, a really quiet cab. Memories.😊

We have run a 4440 for several years. It was one of the last 4440's made as it's cab has a 4450 number. Pulled a 7200 vac 12 row and a 18' White 271 disc most of it's life. My absolute favorite is out '73 4230 with 4-post canopy. It has been a great tractor. In it's time here it has planted corn, cultivated, pulled side dress bar, sprayer, pulled wagons, spread manure, bush-hog, run augers and taken grandkids for tractor rides. Having retired now this past year from farming it will not be leaving. I look for reasons or excuses to use that tractor. The engine has never been touched with about 7000 hours on it. She's been a good one.

I have driven a bunch of them over the years. I think my favorite will always be my uncle's 4440 I drove as a teenager. It was the first big tractor I drove. I loved the sound of the motor and the feel of the tractor working.

My favorite JD 2wd is the 4840 with the optional huge 4 rib front tires and row crop spaced duels. One tough strong machine 💪

Started farming 4 yrs ago with a 1973 JD 4430. Grandpa bought it new and used on the drill to seed his wheat, barley, and durum. Now we use it a little bit on everything (planter, chopper, pull-type swather, etc.)

I worked for a farmer in NE Indiana back in the 80's. I chisel plowed with a 4840 & mow board plowed with a 4850 that had front wheel assist. I loved both tractors. Thanks for bringing back memories.😊

Have a 4055 2wd we bought new with roughly 4k hrs. Still used to pull rotary rakes,tedders, and sometimes a drill. A great tractor.

purchased a 4250 2wd in the summer of 2023 to take the load off my 6420 and 7630. no regrets. it spreads manure and pulls a drill and haybine. it has more power than i anticipated. the newer cabs are much superior but the soundguards are very reliable. they are very affordable now with lots of future ahead of them. great video

We have a 4430 that's used for planting, spraying and baling we also have a 4230 with a jd 265 self-leveling loader. But the most impressive for me was being able to drive a 4430 at the Minnesota State Fair tractor driving contest before any farmer could buy one. It was unbelievable how John Deere advanced tractor design over the competition

On our farm we have a 4040 with a 8 speed power shift. We use it to rake, bale and bundle small hay bales; harrow, plant, and prep fields for planting. Very reliable tractor and still runs like a top!

1973 open station 4430 with Vintage Style Rops and Canopy. 8 speed syncro transmission. Mostly retired, Used for Tractorcade but also pulls a 20 ft batwing mower nicely. 1982 4440 power shift. Mostly retired but has done it all with 9,000 hrs and has never been torn down. Original paint with 18.4 X 42 Firestone rears and 16L X 16.1 Firestone 4 rib fronts. I’m 61 years old and these two tractors will still be going long after I’m gone!!!

Oh yeah the opening tractor, we got 2 4840s and we like them, we have over size tires on the back of them, ones got 20.8-42s and the other has 18.4-46. Great video Jason 👍👍

Very cool to see all these tractors in their 2wd configuration. The 4840 and the 4230 are the only two I’ve ever seen set up that way. Out here in SE Idaho, PFWD/MFWD became standard on everything as soon as it was available.

I do all of our alfalfa baling, about 300 bales this year, with a 1976 4430 sound gard tractor and 566 baler. That's a really cool story about the last sound gard tractor ever to roll off the assembly line seen here running a grain cart. Thanks so much for sharing.

We had two 4430 one cab and one four post canopy. We did row crop planting and tillage and hay. We had a 4840 we used for heavy fall an Spring tillage.

Great video as always. We still run 2 Soundguard tractors a ‘72 4230 for mowing and spraying and an ‘88 4650 mfwd to drill beans and pull a 1051 grain cart.

I farmed with the 4040, 4240, 4440,,,Best tractors ever made by JD. Why best? because they did not have a computers in them! 40 years in service, with few repairs as well. Fix & repair as long as you wish. The 7810 was good tractor as well, nearly zero problems. 8330 was a good one too. But the new JD's,,,, dile the dealer all day! You will have more calls to the dealer than to your wife!

Favorite by a long shot was the 8850. Rode one around the dealers lot when they got one in. Wow this is something... Farm I worked for bought an 8650, quite an upgrade from the IH 4366 (how to ruin a perfectly good Stieger with IH parts) it replaced. Personally owned a 4440, great tractor, still have a 4560.

The Florida farm set a timer started there in the 90s was running between 90 and 100 tractors some smaller John Deere's with european-made fiberglass cabs for spray safety also some high crop 4440 and high crop 4430

For me it's a tie between the open 4230 or 4760. We farm with a 2wd 4240 that plants corn, cuts and bales hay, and pulls gravity boxes at corn harvest. Also have a 4050 mfwd with loader, usually only hooked to the blade in the summer. The 4050 is the winter tractor feeding cows and pulling the manure spreader.

i have a 4430 that I use on my hobby farm. Probably more tractor than I need but the 4430's are reasonable HP compared to the 40 series Also have a JD LP Gas 4020. I can't believe that tractor is 60 years old and how dependable it still is. The most operator friendly tractor I know of.

Spent many hours in 4650 2wd. Drove it home from the dealership in the Fall of 1987 in the Blacklands of Central Texas. Something about a large 2wd tractor with the big 4 rib front tires looks tough (Regardless of the Slippage). The 4840 comes to mind as the 1st one I saw like that. Thanks again for the video. We own a 1980 2WD 4040 with a cab, Quad-range and a front loader and use it as our utility tractor, doing odd jobs with it. It used to run some implements like a small square baler but that is behind it now.

Soundguard was about the cab, it featured a better insulated, sound deadening cabin. Many other cabs up to that point were more or less rough metal cabs that did little to reduce the engine noise or provide comfort. Soundguard was an improvement with heat, AC and radio, air cushioned seat, etc.

I have a 4455 I use , have owned a 4555: 4955; that 4555 was the best tractor I’ve ever owned . Should have never traded!!! Hate the new ones def and all the emissions, have spent a lot repairing those new ones!! Older ones more reliable imo…..
