These new combines are works of art for comfort, efficiency, and crop throughput in difficult conditions. Growing up on a dairy farm in the 60's, 70's, and 80's we had an International 403 gasoline combine. Moved so slow by today's standards, it's laughable. Everything was manually adjusted. It worked very well for our farm, of course, we did not have near the acres to cover, but it served us for almost 25 years before my parents retired. Dad knew every inch of that combine and it was impeccably maintained.

Tracks are the way to go in my opinion. We run them on almost every piece of equipment. The ride is better traction is great but the reduced compaction is the best part . By running tracks we have almost eliminated all heavy tillage and increased yields. We now only have to till before planting wheat into standing corn stalks and then we only do vertical tillage on the first inch of soil to size up the residue. This fall has been very wet here in southern Michigan . Its so wet that the only crop being ran is mostly corn and then not many farms are going due to mudd and standing water. We are very behind on beans compared to corn . We had 3 inches of rain between yesterday and today and tomorrow we will be running corn while everyone else is sitting because we run tracks . Not many people run tracks but every year more farms are switching to them . Great video keep up the good work !

Maybe it is just the auto guidance/steer system, but starting at around the 5:47 mark, there appears to be something worn or going out on the rear steer axle. If you watch, you can see it chattering back and forth like it has badly worn axle pivot bearings. You can see it at other times throughout the video too. Surely that is just the auto steer?

Seems like the combines need to spread out a little, to stay away from each other's dust, so the air filters don't get plugged up so fast. Running so close also makes the tractor on the grain cart run through more dust and plugging its air filter.
@bigtractorpower
@bigtractorpower 3 жыл бұрын
They blow of the combines each move during the day and service the machines each morning. They mitigate the dust as much as possible. By running the combines in the same section they utilize the grain carts efficiently. Well one cart is handling the combines, one cart is in transit from the trucks a d one cart is filling a truck.

Jason, thanks for a great video! It's quite well known with-in engineering that tracks has higher internal friction as it has so many more mowing parts and support wheels which are in direct contact with the belt continously. But also the total lenght of the track and the larger ground contact surface itself of the tracks draws more energy (more friction i.e better traction) vs a wheel which obviously has lower friction and traction but higher ground pressure. I would like to hear more from the gentleman in the cab about how big family farms thinks and plans around larger machine investments as these 3 S790 combines. Fimancing/leasing?, ROI time, replacement pace, service and repair cost vs running old machines? Do they calculate and know the newer models will increase yield or capacity and uptime? How "digital" are they about their machine choises and investments?

They run a 36 row DB90 and 24 row DB60 planter. The 12 rows match up well.

I noticed his rpm's was running 1,600 to 1,700 rpm's um surprised his low engine speed alarm didn't go off but I guess he got it set to the rpm range he want to run and I knotice his kilowat meter horsepower was very low running at that low rpm's of 1,600 to 1,700 rpms on the S790 and she's rated at 543hp to 616hp 34hp power boots when dumping on the go wit our 13.5 liter power tech pss diesel engine wit twin vgt turbo chargers he was running steady at 4mph at that low rpm's wit a 12 row corn 🌽 head

I'm sure its set on an auto function, he wasn't pushing the combine hard enough to require more engine speed... If you watch other channels for example Larson's,,, Chet has been running his 790 5.5mph in 250 bu corn, pulling 2100 RPM,,, at capacity... Gramps is just chilling here,,, LOL...

You got it. I’ve spent some hours in an S680 running a 612c in 200bu corn. Easily hanging at 5.5-6mph.

I usually run at 5.5 mph when I was running our class 9 S790 yeah he has his auto on thats the reason why he running a low rpm range I can set the same thing on our big class 11 X9-1100 combine that I ran wit 16 row corn 🌽 head at 6.8 mph
