The question I was specifically asked was if I could do a video on a lower trim package 3/4 ton truck that would be a safe option for towing a 36' 8500lb travel trailer. I tried to get in a 2018 RAM and a 2018 Chevy before going to my Ford contact. Both dealerships did not have the truck in the trim I was looking for instock or they were too busy to get the truck I requested. This video was more about mid trim gas trucks and features you can get in them for towing trailers under 10k. Dealerships and Manufacturers pay me nothing to do these videos. It's more about truck availability than anything.

We tow a 35' 9000lb TT with our 2011 F-250 CCSB Lariat FX4 6.2L. 116k on the truck and pulls it like it is brand new. Awesome motors in these things. Ranch Hand bumper on front of course. It is Texas after all.

I like how you were able to show some more basic trim levels, like that XL with the STX package. Bugs me that automaker press fleets always only have the highest end optioned trucks. These more basic optioned trucks are much more realistic for a lot of us. And like you said, these are nice trucks. They have a lot going for them, including plenty of power and comfort.

I agree when you give your suggest towing weights under the max from the manufacturer. People seem to get fixated on how their truck can tow huge numbers. I think they forget you have to turn and stop the load as well. I pull a 8-9000 pound water trailer regularly. I used to do it with a half ton and yes it pulled it but it felt as if the trailer pushed the truck around especially if i wasn't able to completely top off the tank, water sloshing around is a pain. I had no faith that if my trailer brakes failed I could safely stop the trailer. When I switched to a 3/4 ton the ease of towing was drastic. The extra weight of the truck dampens back and forth motions. There is much less stress on the truck and me. Ride was better and more confidence inspiring.

The 6.2 is a capable engine, I've said it before we've got a 2013 F-350 crew cab dually flat deck truck weighs 12,000lbs the 6.2 has no problems getting the truck to go. It does drink the fuel but none of us has a light right foot either, when it sounds like your driving a mustang you put your foot into it. Its cheap to maintain an oil change is 50 dollars or less to do an oil change on my 6.0 is 250 dollars. If I could swing it right now I would be selling off my 05 F-350 6.0 for a 6.2 F-350 I'm in the process of building a small house to live in so replacing the truck is taking the back seat.

I recently came across an amazing deal on a 2017 Cummins Laramie and couldn't help but upgrade... the pull of this diesel is incredible. You can't go wrong either way, but for the price, I love my Cummins

I've got a 2014 F350 with the 6.2 and during harvest i pull a 26,000 pound gooseneck grain trailer (34,000 pound GCWR) and it handles it no problem! With the power of the new gas engines, you dont need those expensive diesels.

Just bought a 2019 f250 xlt premium ccsb, absolutely love it the 6.2 has plenty of power mileage isn't the greatest though, roughly 14 city, 10 towing about 5k, and 16 highway..would gladly pay for fuel than the maintenance costs of a diesel, also have 10k gvw and tow and plow packages paid $48k not including plow

I've been wanting an F-250 for years after riding in the back to go fishing; I am a big guy so the leg room and comfort was awesome. I have had multiple GMC 1/2 tons for the last several years, crew cabs when my kids were younger but went to an extended cab in 2011 as the kids had their own vehicles. Now we have grandkids and a 9k+ lb travel trailer (bumper pull) which means: 1. I need more space for people (grandkids) and 2. I need more towing capacity as this trailer REALLY taxes the 5.3 V8 in my current Sierra - even though I don't tow it that often. I still will look at the GM and Dodge products in this space, but really appreciate this (and your other) video(s) as they are another source of info in helping me make an informed decision about what to buy. My timing is to buy something this time next year (Q4 2019 - maybe sooner) if things go according to plan. PS - I am a Texas Native (from North of Houston an hour - but spent a lot of time along the gulf coast fishing, hunting and such) who is now living in Western NY and REALLY enjoy the videos of South Texas! Makes me home sick.

I know you are big truck, big rv, but some of us still like the smaller versions and do just fine with those too..:) I've got a nice little 13 F150 Max Tow Ecoboost (#7700 GVWR and #1920 payload) and tow an old 22' #5000 GVWR TT and love it! The trailer is now 16 years old and doing just fine. In the end, it's whatever floats your boat and how you wish to "camp".. I feel this kind of camping is not really camping, but it gets us out of the house and outdoors, so in the end, that's what it's all about. Thanks and keep up the vids.. Nice content.

The 6.2 is a great engine! I had a 2016 CCSB f250 with 4.30 gears and towed my 15k lbs 42’ 5th wheel with ease. Gas mileage was horrible doing it. 8-9 mpg pulling camper. Now I’ll say this. I now have a 2015 Ram Cummins CCLB with aisin and 3.42 gears. I’ve only pulled our camper twice so far but my initial impressions are. My f250 would run away from the Ram from a stop to hi way speed.

I’m a couple months behind. I bought a new 16’ GMC 1500SLT for my 9k max payload trailer. it ran fine on the flats but had rock and role motion and felt a little light on breaking and suspension. my wife deals with anxiety so it was sold. 8 months ago bought a used 17’ F250 6.2. 3.73 crew, SLT 4x4 with 17k miles on it. Towing with this vehicle is night a day better. Stable and feels better behind the wheel like you have control when needed. Back seat has more room for the kids. Turning radius sucks when backing up (make sure you have plenty of room) other than that great pick up. Don’t care about mpg when I am using corn fuel at $2 per gallon driving around town. I use 91 when towing. My water pump went out 2 weeks ago had ford replace it under warranty. I’ll be installing a K&N next week and making my first trip up mammoth mountain so I’m a little nervous going up 6-8% grade up 9,000 feel elevation but no guts no glory right haha

Long story short I’m not the type of guy who cares for leather nav and all the tech. High 30’s low 40’s for a 6.2 f250 is probably what I’m gonna do now. Brian Cray incredibly helpful to know. I bought a 5'er 33 ft wildcat (GVWR 13k) for my 2012 250CC short 6.7L and didnt know what I was doing back then. Payload is ONLY 2150!!! Added airbags. Helped a little but 20% tounge on 13k lbs and im over limit before I get in the truck. Towed my fam to FL from TX twice. Absolutely No more. Really thinking about moving up to 350 LB CC and just knowing payload is in the upper 3k range is almost doubling my payload.

Thank you for all of your wonderful and informative videos. I noticed you mentioned a few trucks were a step up from a Titan. Yes they are, but you might look at a Titan XD, because with the right tow PKG some have a listing over 12k lbs. I know this video is older, and I'm just now watching, so you might mention them on future videos and I just haven't heard them yet. My Titan is 15 yrs old with 114k miles, so not time to start towing an RV even though rated at 9.5k lbs. Looking for the next step up! Thanks again.😀

I opted for my fourth RAM a 2017 2500 Tradesmen with a 6.4 3:73. Looked at the Ford but the RAM! had all the options for a more economical price and it’s a RAM. Our local Ford dealership would only come off the sticker $1K. My HD Truck has a long Wheelbase. I have a 31ft Windjammer that has a gross weight of 8300 lb’s. That’s well within the safe towing range. My RAM is rated at 12,810 towing and 3420 payload. It’s perfect for towing 8 to 10K pounds. On personal note I love your perspective. I tend to be onboard with you the majority of the time. Thanks!

Although I've had multiple Ford F-350's thru the years (my favourite being my 1997, which I still own). I even had a Freightliner FL-60 Sport Truck for a short time, which I hated. Currently we have a Ford F-150 Limited with the 6.2 liter engine which we use as a daily driver and love. It's A 2014 but she looks brand new and has given us no problems so there are no plans to mortgage the house and trade up. The 6.2 has been a great engine, much better, I think for the mountains than Ford's turbo V-6.

Max conventional towing with the 3.73 Axle is 12,500, but if you opt for the 4.30 rear axle it is up to 15,000. My wife currently has a 2015 F-150 3.5L eco max tow we use to pull an 8k travel trailer. I'm looking to upgrade my 2010 F-150 to this exact truck with the 6.2L, so I appreciate the review. =)

coming from having a 6.2l Raptor and then to a 17 Raptor with Ecoboost that tows a 7500lb travel trailer I would never want the 6.2l engine back. 1-1.5mpg less towing, and much much less tq. Unless you want the 3/4 ton platform for towing you will be really disappointed going from the 3.5l eco max tow to the the 6.2l in a super Duty.

I have to wholeheartedly disagree with the assumption you need a super duty to tow a large TT. My boyfriend and I bought a 2017 Grand Design Reflection 315RLTS new last year and purchased a new 2017 F-150 supercrew limited 3.5 eb with the 10 speed transmission. I installed power airbags on the truck and got a good Andersen WDH for the TT. We’ve put 13,000k miles traveling all over the southwest, Canada, down the west coast and the F-150 pulled the trailer flawlessly. In the mountains the gas mileage sucks pulling 12k lbs, but I’m able to keep driving 70 mph with no issues at all. The great thing about a short box f150 is that you can still use it for a daily driver and find parking. With a super duty that’s not the case. Especially in Los angles. Just food for thought based on my experience thus far.

I wish you would measure the cab height of these trucks so people could get an idea if they will fit in their garage or not. I recently bought an F150 to tow a 6000 lb GVWR camper when I really wanted an F250 because the F250 was a couple of inches too high to fit in my garage. The F150 will do what I need without any problem but, I was trying to future proof any future increase in camper size for a while.

The ford sight say's 77.9" - 81.5" I was concerned as we had a lot of snow and the trains stopped running that I normally take to work. The parking garage at worked seemed low but I have seen trucks in there. So off I went. Had to go in 1 certain entrance as the turning radius on this thing is not good! Anyway, I made it in. My antenna did rub against the ceiling supports all the way up and all the way down. Kinda sucked. Hopefully it's the very rare occasion that I'll have to drive that thing to the city!

Thanks Shackles, in my case the F250 is just too long unless I went for a regular cab with a 142" wheelbase. I need at least a supercab which will add 6" to the overall length. With the tropical storms we get in S Fla I need to be able to shut the garage door.

My STX truck came with the larger screen, center console, "idiot backup mode" for towing, and 2WD. I'm not sure if I'd stick with 2WD - it's very squirrelly when it gets wet - and downright dangerous when it's snow or ice (though I did get chains to help deal with the ice). I really prefer the upgraded screen (and dash computer) - the apple car play function is something I use every day. The price difference, though, may be enough to push me (if I was choosing between those two) to the STX as spec'ed here and then go aftermarket to upgrade the stereo. To me, it's about how livable the truck is and the way my truck was specified, it's very, very livable.

The XLT option is kind of what I would go for. They give pretty discounts on XLTs too, so in reality the 2 trucks are probably only about $1000 to $1500 different cost wise. I'm still waiting to see if they are going to come out with the 7.0l with 10 speed for the F250.

I believe too much consideration is put into the weight of the trailer being towed, and not enough on the height and shape of the trailer . I have a custom work trailer that is 26 ft long with a v nose and slab sides, however it stands 11 ft tall due to my need for 8' ceiling height inside. Although the total weight is under 10,000 lbs, the amount of air that beast pushes is immense and definitely puts a hurt on mileage an tow-ability with a gas powered tow vehicle. Initially I bought a new Ram with the Hemi, and found that the transmission was constantly searching for the right gear, and that it could NOT pull overdrive, even in tow mode. SO, I ended up returning to the Ram dealer and upgrading to a 3/4 ton Diesel. That made ALL the difference in the world. The new truck with the Cummins Diesel doesn't even know it is back there. Since then, I have added a Raptor Toyhauler that is considerably larger than the work trailer to the back lot, and although it is taller, longer, and heavier, it too is towed effortlessly, although I did initially find it a little reactive to the wind of passing Semi's on the road. I agree with you on a load weight distribution hitch. It really helps to calm things down and eliminate any tendency to sway. My truck is set up to tow heavy, and it does a very good job of it now with just a few minor mods.

If you're not sure of the 4x4, they you probably really don't need it. If you really not sure, just weight everything as best you can. It's an expensive option, thousands over the 4x2, it reduces your payload, reduces your mileage, and it's one more thing to break and need maintenance.

Own a 2017, F-250, 4X4, XLT Crew Cab and have had it to the dealership twice for "death wobble" Ford claims they engineered it out in 2016 for the 2017 (and up) models but even 2018 & 2019 owners are experiencing "death wobble" as well. The dealership replaced a bunch of front end steering and suspension components the first time then told me they couldn't find anything wrong or duplicate the issue the second time in. They said they drove it 37 miles over varied road surfaces but couldn't get it to act up. They said the tire air pressure was incorrect. Ironically, the truck was serviced the previous Saturday by their sister Ford dealership so they adjusted the tire pressure at that visit.....this was the following Thursday the "death wobble" reared it's ugly head again. Last week, two different law firms contacted me asking if I would like to join a class action lawsuit against FOMOCO for this "death wobble" they continue to deny exists or will do anything significant to rid these trucks of it. When you pay $50k, $60k, $70k, and more for a vehicle, it shouldn't spontaneously start violently shaking to the point it's so dangerous it can cause a crash or worse......

What “absolutely needs a diesel truck”? Do you have a video explaining it? I’ve recently acquired a 2012 Palomino Puma TT just under 7000lb DW, with a GVWR OF 11,137lb and a hitch weight of 977lb. I’m a gal who will be upgrading from my tiny GMC Acadia to the smallest truck I can get away with to pull this TT comfortably. Any suggestions??? I think theses numbers are throwing me for a loop. They don’t matchup with anything out there nowadays.

I'd personally go for a loaded XLT or a Lariat, but honestly, what more does one need beyond what the STX offers? Most people want their trucks too look good, and that STX looks like any other typical F-Series Super Duty, and it still has enough features and creature comforts to not make you feel like you're giving up anything just to have the kind of truck, and it's all for under $40,000. That said though, I think Ram is still the best value. Even a tradesman diesel is a lot of truck and nearly the same money. No need to spend $70,000 on truck to have the capability like so many lose their minds over, there are plenty of more affordable options for people.

What about the Regular Cab with 6.2L? I do to plan to tow anything larger than a 25ft Airstream - which we are still on the fence about buying - but I like that it fits in one parking space and I have been told that with the snow plow/camper package and 4.30 rears, it will not only fit a 35" tire without lifting or leveling, but the 4.30s will get anything up and moving with ease - but will suffer a bit above 70mph on the highway. What are your thoughts?

One thing about the Sync is that the screen is very small and not too good for camera views. Sync 3 is much bigger. I can’t imagine a 360 camera system on an XL or XLT. Some of the good stuff I want (emergency braking, distance-pacing cruise control) only comes in a Lariat and up. You can at least get BLIS on a XLT.

This is a good review for a 3/4 ton truck...but what about us guys who aren't traveling across the country with our campers? I'm pulling a 36' travel trailer around my local region, not traveling more than 4 hours from home, mostly staying within an hour or two. Doing it with an f150 with the 3.5l ecoboost with the 2nd trailer package. Truck never feels underpowered, trailer never feels like it's trying to kill me or drag me into the ditch. As a truck driver for over 15 years, I know what it feels like to be hauling a trailer that's too heavy for that truck. I know what it feels like to be hauling a poorly loaded trailer. I have never felt that with my recreational combo. I've even been in emergency situations where I was coming downhill with the camper and had to "emergency stop" and the truck performed flawlessly and the trailer stayed right in line. I dont want to have to deal with maintenance and upkeep cost, nor deal with poor gas mileage for the 90% of the time I'm not towing anything. I average 18-20 mpg when not towing and 10-12 when loaded down with camper and family. I enjoy your videos and appreciate your point of view, but would love to see a video that pertains more to me every once in a while. I'm sure I'm not the only one out here like me! Thx!

Hello Big Truck. Yea that Fords a nice truck. But I really like the ride a HD Chevy gives and would be my choice in a 2500 Truck. I know the 6.0 is not rated as high as the Fords 6.2, or the Rams 6.4, but in every comparison I’ve watched and read the Chevy always comes out on top in the 10,000 Limited tests. Even on FLT up the Ike Gauntlet! The Chevy had the quickest time and best mileage, of which is very important to me. Even just empty and out cruising the Chevy gets best mileage, in the 4x4AWD trim. Plus the prices are lower in every trim level, now granted even the High Country does not compare to a Limited Ford or Ram, but the price is lower and comparable to say a Laramie or maybe just short of a King Ranch. But does have a great 4G LTE WIFI System and OnStar, with what I’ve found to be The easiest Navigation System to use of the three. That is available on all the trim levels of the Chevy and to some degree the Ford. But for the money and looks, ride/handling and overall comfort at its intended use, the LT Custom is s fine Truck. Going a little higher the LT Z71, is fine also.

So, would the consensus for a 26-27 foot long, 7600 lb GVWR, 900 lb tongue weight travel trailer be: F-150 (3.5L V6 EcoBoost) would be pushing its limits, the F-250 6.2L gas would be fine, and an F-350 (6.2L gas) would be overkill?
