I have a 2017 Platinum F-150. Some of things I realized about this trim level. - I could do without the sunroof. I've opened it twice, or maybe three times in the years I've owned it. I'd much rather not have the sunroof and get back that added weight as payload. - I could do without the messaging seats. Again, I've only used them a couple of times since I've owned the vehicle. - I could do without the lane keep assist, but I just turn that off. The one thing I would never be without again in any vehicle. - Adaptive cruise control. The things I really like but wouldn't be absolute deal breakers for me, but I would try really, really, really hard to have. - Heated and ventilated seats. - Heated steering wheel. - Heated mirrors

It would be interesting if you did a weigh at a CAT scale so we could see exactly what the payload in the truck is since the dash scale seems very vague. You would then have some kind of an idea as to what each mark on the payload scale represents. Great videos. Thanks.

A note on the 10 speed transmission; my 2021 Superduty took about 4,000 miles of driving between towing, and not towing in eco mode before it settled on shift points. Once it did, it’s smoother than snot on a Teflon coated suit.

I agree with the shifting on the 10 speed. My HO Ram with the Aisin in tow haul mode had very good shift points and just feels right. My close friend and neighbor has a 10 speed GMC Denali 3500 and his said his 10 speed kind of hunts through the gears while pulling his Toy Hauler. He doesn't like that compared to his older 6 speed Denali. Ford has really stepped up their game and I hear 2025 will be even better. Thanks for the video.
@josephsouza9951
@josephsouza9951 14 күн бұрын
My friend also has a 2024 Denali dually and towing the same trailer trans hunts more than his 2019 with a 6 speed, but you have to remember the new one has 3:31 rear verses 3:73 , My 2020 450 tows a 21k fifth wheel and you hardly notice it hunting for the right gear, but its also has a 4:30 rear

Funny enough my experince is the opposite. I went from a 2015 ram HO/Aisin to a 24 Chevy Duramax and the 10 speed. I think the 10 speed does way less hunting than my old 6 speed. I ppend a lot of time out west in the mounatins. The old 6 speed would always jump between 3/4 4/5 when trying to go up and down hills. I always felt that the i needed inbetween gears so it wasn't always shifting up and down trying to maintain speed. I would pick the 10 speed always over my old 6 speed.

My 2024 Silverado Duramax with a 10 speed doesn't hunt for gears at all while pulling a 42 ft 5th wheel. It tows it like it's nothing. I also have a 2.5" leveling kit with 20" wheels and 35" tires and I'm averaging about 11mpg...and I don't drive slow.

Great video on towing with your new F-450. We’ve a 2024 F-450 and love the how it tows our 18.5K Vanleigh Beacon…very smooth. I would agree that coming from a 2018 F-350 DRW with the 6 speed the 10 speed seems to shift a little firmer 1-5 gears but is fine in the upper gears. We typically get 9-10 mpg unless we have a head wind then we’re down around 8 mpg.

We have the 2019 392MBL Chaparral, it's the version just below the Brookstone. It's been a great rig outfitted for full time with Victron Inverters, 1500w on the roof and 700aH of lithium. We've crisscrossed the country several times, been from Glacier NP to the Keys in FL. The RV has a good 50k miles on it today. On it's 2nd set of brakes. It's held up really well, only minor issues to repair. We've not had any of the frame flex issues that some of the more expensive brands have had. Despite taking way too far off road as we love to boondock. Been full timing 7 years, 5 of which has been in the Chaparral. Can't think of a better rig.

Soooo here is some good real world information on almost the same truck. I have a 2024 Ford F350 SRW 6.7HO Platinum Tremor towing a 2024 Brinkley Z3610, trip ready the Brinkley is just under 18k pounds and three adult passengers. I have according to the CAT Scales about 100 pounds of GVWR and about 120 pounds of payload and about 60 pounds of GAWR. The internal Truck scale says I’m over. Even though I am just inside the limits. I just finished a trip from Dallas,TX to Santa Rosa, Beach Florida / just passed Destin. Traveling at 75 and 78 mph I averaged 9.1 miles per gallon. It was about 1500 miles round-trip. I’ve towed the RV with this truck just under 4000 miles and averaged 8.9 miles to the gallon. I recently added airbags and at 50 PSI it eliminates any chucking that came with certain concrete roads. I love the truck but every now and then I think maybe I should’ve gotten a F450.

Nope, you are not. 2024 Chevy Duramax dually with a 42 ft 5th wheel. It pulls like a dream between 70-75mph. I know I shouldn't, but sometimes I hit 80. But people should tow at the speed that they feel most comfortable. There's no shame in going a little slower.

The speed rating of my tires are 75 mph. I typically tow at 65 mph. Bump up the speed a little when I need to pass on the interstate (67-68 mph) then back to 65 mph. I want the tires to last as long as possible.

70-75mph in my 2024 Duramax dually with 42ft 5th wheel. It feels comfortable, tows great, within my tire rating, not a problem at all. But everyone should tow at the speed that they feel comfortable towing. No shame in that.

@treecatt
@treecatt 14 күн бұрын
I noticed the hard shifting when towing with my new 2024 F350. Good to know it's not just me. Hoping it will get smoother over time. Also, I don't think the HUD notifies you when you are exceeding the speed limit which is what I expected. According to my user manual, when the speed limit display changes to filled then returns to non-filled that is because the 360 camera system read the speed limit from a road sign you just passed and updated the displayed value to match.

I also agree my 22 f350 6.7 powerstroke hunts for gears and I just feel like it’s not really programmed to find the best gear for the truck even though I have a 355 gear ratio I feel like it just wants to get to tent gear as fast as possible even if it needs it kind of bogs down the engine. It’s almost like it’s programmed for fuel economy, not power band. Unloaded I would say it’s more of an exaggerated tow haul feeling almost like it’s quick to go first third, fifth, sixth, seventh eighth ninth 10th and then realizing you’re in 10th gear at 52 mph and you can hear the engine almost get to that 1100 RPM wanting to bog out I have no idea why the transmission wants to shift like that. It’s definitely not a dealership thing because they’ll check to see if it updates are current and you can go ahead and reflash it and put it back in a learning mode but at the end the day it’s gonna shift the way it was programmed the shift from the manufacture, and it’s kinda love it or hate it or drive it because you’re kind of stuck with it. Don’t get me even started about driving this thing through our mountain passes in the snow or even just trying to get in and out of my property during the snow. This thing starts slipping and rather than the RPMs, jumping up it just wants to shift which is not a confidence inspiring feeling knowing that you’re seeing it in third gear and you start to lose your momentum because it feels like it’s shifting up because the truck is getting confused on the situation.

@scottmichaels6854
@scottmichaels6854 13 күн бұрын
That a good idea since you're towing a 30ft trailer with an SUV. I'm personally not a fan of towing anything other than a utility trailer with any SUV, and I have owned a Sequoia. My 2024 Duramax dually, towing a 42ft 5th wheel, tows great between 70-75 mph. But it's a bigger vehicle with much more stability than an SUV. Personally I think it's dangerous to everyone on the road for someone to be towing a travel trailer with an SUV. I also live by the motto, "Just because you can, doesn't mean you should".

Fuel economy while towing was roughly the same. I figured the trade off, is the increased horsepower and torque as well as the 10 speed transmission shifting.

My thoughts are with the right set up you could load share off your truck combined with solar and arrive at a boon docking location near full charge and a cool Rv. I’m drawn to the victron multiplus pass thru inverter/charger. Will your system load share? Or put another way will your battery charge while drawing on solar?

Ford says 1,000 miles break in before towing. I had to go drive about 950 miles before I did my first tow. 😅. I also did an immediate oil change after that. And another after my first tow just to be sure all the break in metal shavings are out of the system completely. And finally I did another oil change at 3000. After that I just change oil every 5k. Well under Fords recommended.

Interesting weight numbers in the bed. Granted your still under the max, but I think you need to get to CAT scale to verify those numbers. I personally would be worried, if those numbers were around halfway okay. I think you you are sending the wrong message to your viewers saying it’s okay.

Do not get airbags this time. The ride will be ruined like in Big Red. I had airbags with the jounce inside. Removed them and instead added a leaf with Deaver Spring to deal with load. Got range of travel back and no more bouncy teeter totter over rear axle. Just let it squat and travel like its supposed to. I added a leaf due to constant loads, never removed.

Ignoring the excitement and pride of a new vehicle, and all the latest gadgetry a new model year brings, and ignoring the high effectiveness of the Cummons exhaust brake, would the physical towing experience been any different than towing with a Duramax, Powerstroke SO, or either flavor of the Cummins?
@BigTruckBigRV
@BigTruckBigRV 14 күн бұрын
To be honest, all these new diesel trucks pull exceptionally well. I would have to say that the powerstroke is certainly quieter than the Cummins and has a bit more of a linear feel to it. The Cummins tends to feel very commercial and powerful by terms of sheer torque. Also, the Cummins has less gears to shift through which makes it feel a little bit harder when shifting. Regardless though, you really can't go wrong with any of these trucks.

It's likely 10% under max. For an f-450, I'm not too concerned about that. If I was closer to the max on an F350, that would make more sense since the components used to make an f-450, tend to be more capable.
