Big Truck Big Travels

Күн бұрын

The last of our Summer Tour takes us to Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota in the Badlands. We are excited to see wildlife and the park that originated the Antiquities Act. And we get to eat steak cooked on pitchforks! That's a new one for us!
We are boondocking in the Scoria Pit area of the National Grasslands but it's dirt roads with deep ruts and steep hills. We hope we can make it in our Huge Mega RV! We don't want to call Matt's Off-Road Recovery but Sondra is having some doubts once we hit the road ruts.
A neighbor comes by to ask for help with his tires. It's nice to be on the assisting end and not the "need" end!

RV Camping
We like to "Switch it Up" between resorts and campgrounds and boondocking is always an option.
We draw inspiration from Keep Your Daydream KYD, Less Junk More Journey, Finding Our Someday and Changing Lanes. We normally travel in an HDT similar to KZbin channels Suite Travels, Switch it Up and Watts on Wheels. I also get some ideas from the editing style of Happily Ever Hanks @Happilyeverhanks #thankshanks and believe it or not, I actually learned something from MRBeast Mr Beast video's as well. We're not exactly taking Life in the Slow Lane but we do stop and smell the roses.
Our journey is the destination. We want to share our experiences of our discovery of What's Next.
I get my music from:
Epidemicsound.com
Tracks:
Outta Here by Jennifer Holm (intro song)
Loner on a Cliff by Johan Glossner
I believe in New Beginnings by Constellate
Goodbye Virginia by Sture Zetterberg
Amazon Shop (no extra charge to you)
A convenient way to see (or buy) the items you see in the video's which may help in your adventure.
www.amazon.com...
We use the Open Roads card for diesel fuel and save a bundle each time we fill up our Big Rig. We also use it to fill up our Onan generator.
The big blue boards (XL version) we use sometimes to get us "un-stuck" is from:
Gotreads.com
Our Class C is built by Thor Motorcoach on a Ford F550 chassis. It's a production build Magnitude model XG32. We tow our red Jeep Wrangler Sahara behind it. We've made some modifications to it so that we can boondock comfortably. Lithium batteries, Victron 3000w multi-plus inverter, dual alternators charge while traveling and mods to the water system greatly enhance it's boondocking capabilities.
Our extreme completely custom 5th wheel is built on a semi-trailer chassis with air suspension and air brakes. Completely loaded it weighs 42,000 lbs rolling down the highway. And we do roll down the highway nearly every week. You see, we believe that if your home has wheels they should be used.
Vehicles:
2016 Volvo VNL780 "Voyager"
2016 Smart fortwo "Pathfinder"
2019 SpaceCraft Custom built semi-trailer 5th wheel "Orion"
2023 Thor Magnitude XG32 Class C "Curiosity"
2017 Jeep Wrangler Sahara "Artemis"
Power system:
3250 watts of solar with Panasonic panels
30.1 KWH of Lithium batteries
2- 4K watt Magnum Inverters deliver power as if we are on shore power
2- 4K watt 240v Cotek Inverters deliver additional power for our LG Mini split HVAC and stove
Coachnet is our roadside assistance company we use but hopefully we don't use them too often. LOL
We are not sponsored by Whataburger but I do enjoy them anytime I can get my hands on one. They used to be just out of Texas but they have expanded.

I guess it's a sign that I'm getting old, but prairie dogs are quite entertaining to sit and watch. We have little bar and grill in my hometown in Oklahoma where you can sit on the patio and the prairie dogs are in a field literally just feet away from you. Drinking beer and watching prairie dogs is a fun date for me and my wife.😄

Such cute prairie dogs and a lucky coyote sighting. Add feral horses and bison to the mix and it was a good wildlife stop. I will need to lookup the difference between wild horses and feral horses! Glad you guys didn’t get stuck but can relate to Sondra’s “hot flashes” on that road. Keep the videos and photos coming. I am living vicariously through you guys. Safe travels. I look forward to next week, and beyond!

When I went to school at a University in Eastern North Dakota one summer I remember telling my mom and dad I could count on one hand the few times there weren't any breezes there. In fact one day I believe a tornado was spotted like 20 miles away. I also had a North Dakota studies class where we took a field trip further west towards Bismark and the national park then further south onto a reservation.

Last year my son and his best friend did some backcountry hiking and camping at Teddy Roosevelt National Park. When they set up their tents they could see the bison in the distance. During the night they could hear the bison, close enough for them to hear their breathing. The next morning there were bison piles all around their tents. He said it was an amazing experience!

@@cathygarner8234 we had the same thing happen to us when we tent camped there for the first time. I did not hear a thing but my daughter said she could hear them walking and breathing next to the tent. We got up the next morning and there was several fresh piled and hair hanging from the trees in our area. The national park is beautiful.

What a lovely video. I wish I could go there. It looks so peaceful and serene. It is so hard for me to go anywhere. I can’t walk only a few feet. I use little 4 wheel scooter to get around. Very few places are ADA compliant. We go to the beach in Santa Cruz in California. They have a beach wheelchair you can borrow. I would rather go camping though. Keep making videos I just love watching them. Blessings ❤Chris

A little word of wisdom about them interlocking axles, it’s always wise to lock them in long before you get yourself in a position where you are going to need them, because if your spinning when that air lock kicks it in, just as you was there, it can break a tooth off on that differential, and that is a very expensive mistake. Sometimes it takes time for the air in that system to equal out and make it fully engaged, so that is why you need to do it well in advance, if you can. I’ve replaced a many of them, especially with running the haul road so much, and it’s been a hard lesson learned for me. Lol.

I agree with Alexander. I have drove trucks in the winter all my life. ALWAYS lock POWERDIVIDER before you need. With the powerdivider unlocked you are still driving all four wheels. The lock locks both axles together. Unless you have locking diffs. a wheel on each axle can still spin. (I have repaired powerdividers that my employees have damaged)

We called the prairie dogs dak rats. I have been to Theodore Roosevelt national park several times camping. The musical is fantastic. I loved the fondue. It was on the open prairie, not under a pavilion when I did the fondue thing. Of course, I haven been there since 2002. They also filmed a movie there called Wooly Boys. There is horse back riding and good fishing there. I caught a real nice catfish in about 3 feet of water. Medora is a very pretty little town. They have a Medora Christmas special that I never got a chance to see. You guys brought back so many great memories for me.

I gotta say your as good a truck driver as they come forward and backwards but what am trying to get at is anytime your rig gets off the comfort of payment stop and lock up your differential and leave them locked up until you return to the Payment, keeping in mind that the truck should not travel any faster then 45 MPH on payment with the differential in gaged

What a beautiful location to camp JUST SO THE WIND BEHAVES. Do not remember what states off the top of my head but the prairie dogs are doing massive massive damage to the land . There has been cows an Horses that will step by mistake into the holes an brake legs . So the states have open season on them because like you talked about there being thousands and thousands . Thanks we would enjoy that spot .

Nice place. Been thru there many times but never stopped. Tnx for the show. As for your spinning: if you have full lockers you should be locking everything and never dump air. All wheels will spin not just one set. When all locked your steering is somewhat compromised as both sets of drives are turning. With one axle locked stereo’s good but traction isn’t as good on uneven ground. Have fun👍

Your grazing roads are pretty tame compared to the logging and oilfield access we have around here. Every day on the way to work I see a half-dozen heavily loaded articulated logging trucks barreling down into town, from some roads that would be tight for a dirt bike. Ruts and dirt are the rule, not the exception. And 40-foot office skids, maybe 45 tons each, are winched onto flatbeds by the dozen over dirt (gravel if you're lucky) roads to mill, refinery and drilling sites every day. Point is, if you want to go 4-wheeling with an 18-wheeler, it's possible but you need the right equipment, lots of suspension travel, lots of weight and occasionally tire chains. And office or living quarters have to be all steel, I-beam based, and only chained down (not bolted or welded) to the trailer.

Hi Sondra, your truck does not have "4 wheel drive" what it has is a "power divider" that gives each differential equal power but because Orion has "open Diffs" only one set of wheels on each differential will drive and that drive always goes to the wheel that has least resistance hence why only 2 wheels, 1 on each axel were spinning when David was trying to back up. If you want all 4 sets of drive wheels to engage you would have to have "cross locks" fitted to both differentials and I doubt the cost would be justified for the few times you would need them. Here in New Zealand I drive a 700hp Volvo on log cartage with full lockup which I need on forest roads, especially in the winter. Love your channel and look forward to each video.

Thank you. We've found to lock them before you need them. Still learning but we're getting better.
