On those entry level bikes the cheap chains stretch really fast, and sprockets wear out, or even bend. I upgraded my chain to a 710 and replaced the sprocket, on kink gap and this tight/loose issue went away.

Also, the sprocket boss bolt has to be lined up evenly. I have Profile cranks and a Profile sprocket and it's possible to tighten the sprocket down a tiny bit off center. The placement of the sprocket boss bolt matters. On top of that, the crank spindle spacer is important also. I once had a bike that pedaled just fine for quite some time and then developed this tight- loose issue. The bottom bracket bearings were warped because I didn't put the spindle spacer in between the bearings. Swapped out the bearings for a new set and put the spacer inside the bottom bracket and the problem went away.

Great video Phu, I bought a Primer from a kid a few months back, he had the cranks misaligned. So no matter how much I adjusted the wheel and sprocket nut. It wouldn’t get better. I took apart cranks yesterday, greased them, took out one spacer, and now everything feels really good, it is pretty consistent now and it feels so smooth. I think my chain was off kilter a bit. Also bought a cnc sprocket.

Phu is not lying, this problem is present on most, if not all, OEM complete bikes, and it's possible on any bike. While I would consider it "within acceptable tolerances" for a cheap bike, I think that the bicycle industry, ironically, is not actually very good at mass producing round objects, and I don't only mean stamped steel BMX sprockets. I have an OEM bike that's decently high-end, and for the life of me I can't tune the uneven chain tension out of it (without replacing parts). It was perfect when I bought it, but at one point I ran the chain too tight and it deformed the sprocket or maybe the driver, so in that case it's my fault. Eventually I'll replace the sprocket and hopefully that'll even things back out. I also just built a fully aftermarket bike a few days ago and, while I've only ridden it once or twice around the block so far, I am relieved that so far this problem is not present on that bike, and I wouldn't be happy if it was for the money I paid. I think the bicycle industry needs to come to terms with mass producing round things, and I don't think this should be a problem on even OEM bikes above around 600 bucks, but what I think is at odds with the reality of the bicycle industry there. Anyway, in most cases, assuming proper assembly, the culprit is going to be the sprocket, so if you can't tune out uneven chain tension, just get a high quality sprocket and it should effectively solve the problem. If you have this problem on a brand new bike over around 600 bucks, I'd ask the bike shop do their best to get the chain tension even for you before you replace any parts. At that price, I'd consider a perceptibly egg-shaped sprocket to be a manufacturing defect, but I'm not a bike company, and you might have to buy a sprocket on your own. The thing is, even chain tension is possible. It's not worth worrying about on a cheap bike, and its arguably not worth worrying about on any bike you're going to take out and smash into handrails and concrete ledges, but its definitely something that can be achieved on a bicycle. Anyway, even tension or not, never run your chain too tight like I did, it mangles every other part of your drivetrain, fast and hard. Once that happens, even tension is impossible, and anyway its the least of your problems at that point. Actually its the least of your problems at any point, which is what this video is saying, and also the reason I haven't replace the sprocket on my OEM bike yet, but I can understand why people are anal about bikes if they're more expensive, the parts should be rounder than the cheap bike, otherwise what's the point of the bicycle industry?

With older bikes that used a freewheel, it was the freewheel that was the biggest offender with regard to being out of round. You could tell it was the freewheel because if you just spun the rear wheel while keeping the cranks stationary you could see the chain getting tighter and looser, and you could see the freewheel's sprocket moving around slightly, which is what was causing the chain to get tighter and looser. I don't have any experience with newer bikes that use a freehub, but it wouldn't surprise me if those did the same thing, since a freehub uses the same mechanism as a freewheel (simple ratchet mechanism, fundamentally the same thing that's inside a ratchet wrench). As for free coaster hubs, I have no idea about those, but regardless of the type of drive mechanism you have, it's easy enough to test. Just flip your bike upside down and give the rear wheel a spin, making sure your cranks stay stationary (which removes the front sprocket from the equation). If you see any motion in your chain and rear sprocket at all while your rear wheel is spinning then your rear sprocket is out of round.

@MerchantOfDeath153 жыл бұрын
check the cone nuts on your hub to start, if they are loose the wheel can have side to side play. Thats the only thing I can think of but thats your best place to start. Take it off the bike and check the driver out, give it a spin, try and move the axle around, and check the hardware out like nuts. If you arent a gorilla about it, you can also take apart the hub and clean it out...But only as a last resort, my cassette is like 6 years old and i havent had to take it apart. Best of luck.

Isn't the problem exacerbated with a 25t vs the 16t/44t standard?? With a 44t you can run the chain a little more loose without the chain hitting the frame which gives you a a bigger buffer preventing tight spots. First difference I noticed with 9/25 vs race bike 16/44

fixed gears it is also pronounced, tighten chain on a tight spot not on a loose and it corrects the issue. crank arms point out the tight spots when locating new rings. if they made chain ring billets on a lathe they could make them more precise, slicing each ring off the billet... lathe is more accurate than cnc for spun objects.. cnc lathe, hmmm 🚴♀️

What's your take on spline drive compared to what you were just explaining here?
@netrunner20493 жыл бұрын
IMHO prefer spline drive. With bolt drive over time the sprocket bends, maybe because of the crank pressure. Maybe if you have a really sturdy sprocket, like 7075 aluminum it won't bend. But spline drive just avoids that issue.

From working on my bikes i noticed the biggest thing contributing to the tight/loose thing is a stripped sprocket bolt, if it tightens the sprocket down and the screw isnt perfectly straight the screw pushes the sprocket to an angle and depending on where the angle is during rotation it gets tighter or looser.
@brianrobison7493 жыл бұрын
Ive replaced the chain and both rear and back sprockets and the tight/looseness was pretty much the exact same which makes me believe the angle of the bolt is a big contributing factor.
