I am trying this on the same PNW Ranier post and the shim will not go in. I cannot find the three slots. When I look with a flashlight, I can see some slots bit they are much thinner than the shim. I bought the one up components shim like you have (they sent me three in the package). I have tried to cut the shim to make the three legs shorter, but still no joy. Do you know if PNW changed this? I know they have their own adjustable one now, but I have the older Ranier like yours (150mm).

I can confirm that this works on the Trek Fuel EX7 2019 that uses the TranzX YSP-18JL dropper. I belive the Fuel EX8 and upwards uses the Bontrager droppers.

This trick works fine with a Kore Components dropper post. I made my own shim... Pot Noodle container just happens to be the suitable thickness (1mm) 4.5mm wide legs with 16mm spaces between and attached with a 1.5mm waistband (for want of a better description) seems to work well for those into DIY.

This worked on a Brand X (Trans X) externally routed 125mm dropper. Its a little harder because you cant slide the collar up without disconnecting the string from the bottom, but with a little more effort it worked well.

@@Matto216 Matt this is the shim I used. In the dropdown its called "V1 Dropper Shim" and it come with 3 of them. Just unscrew the collar and slide it up, cut and fit in the shim (this was tricky for me as the slots are hard to find) then slide the collar back down over the shim.

Just got a Santa Cruz Chameleon with a SDG Tellis dropper post. It's just slightly too tall for me and the Chameleon has the bent seat post tube so I can't push it down any further. Will this shim work on my dropper?

Edit October 2020: apparently new Brand X Ascend droppers have 6, not 3, slots so a different shim is required. Thanks for this video! As a result of watching I've been able to reduce my Brand X 150mm dropper to the perfect height 😁

@@josiahrichmond1560 if I remember correctly, I did this: 1) Measured how much lower I wanted the seat at maximum travel and trimmed the difference between that and 150mm from the shim 2) Raised the seat all the way up then pushed it back down half way (the shim won't go in unless you do that) 3) Unscrewed the collar and slid it up the seat post 4) Made sure the white plastic ring under the collar was also lifted 5) Inserted the trimmed shim, prongs downward, into the space at the bottom of the seatpost. Middle prong was centred at the back of the post. Took a bit of fiddling to get it in 6) Slid the plastic ring and collar back down and retightened the collar 7) Tested the travel. All was ok There's a video from OneUp on Vimeo that shows the installation, also. It's brighter than this video but has no words for direction. Hope that helps but let me know if anything isn't clear 👍

Could shorter cranks help if the setup is close already? The shim is so small that I wonder. Considering shorter crank arms already and it seems to me it might help fit while the seatpost is at max as well. At max extension with my post mount bottomed out it is good but not perfect.

That can. I’m 6’2 and run 165 cranks when I can. Unless you’re at Olympic level crank length literally makes no difference.

it probably only works because the pnw dropper has a very similar tech to the one up, if not borrowed tech, very typical of keyway style dropper posts. 9point8 has had adjustable stroke length for the longest time, but it's installed quite differently.

You know, I totally forget the 9point8 could be adjusted. It does look to be really involved, but not something you really need to do often. The oneup and PNW are very similar inside. Though I think the PNW has been on the market longer.

yeah i had a 9point8 for awhile, and the install was kinda weird. thankfully, it's not a task that you have to perform frequently. i can't remember when the pnw dropper came out, maybe one up borrowed the tech from pnw. who knows. but it's uncanny that the same dimension shim works. the shim that is always "sold out." lol even the dropper remote looks similar. i have the one up dropper now and it seems to be working fine for the past 5-6 months. and i agree, all droppers need to have adjustable stroke lengths.

I've got a 2020 TranzX internal dropper, it has 6 channels with 1,99mm round keys (although only in three channels). The OneUp shim definitely won't work, I did manage to make my own shim from an old bottle but it's very tedious to fit into the tight channels and it does increase friction a bit. Add to that the friction from the seat clamp and it gets stuck halfway up every time. TL;DR: posts with 6 small channels are in theory possible to shim with a DIY thing, in practice it's too difficult to get working properly.

Oddly enough I've always had my dropper a few inches up out of my frame so I have never needed to shorten one. It took me awhile to understand why you would want to shorten the travel. I was like what is this dude talking about? LOL I think my Reverb 150 is at it's max height.

I can confirm giant contact switch dropper will fit. I Hand made this one shim using plastic oil bottle. It’s a bit thick at first(1.2mm) and the black bushing inside the giant contact dropper is pretty tight so I sand the shim to appx 0.9mm with a dremel so it will allow the bushing to fit in. I presume the original one bought from oneup should fit fine. As long as they tuck in everything is perfect and I now have a 140mm dropper😎hope this helps, happy riding!

I think it's worth it to just get a oneup dropper, you can get way more travel (like 20-30mm more than other posts), slam it all the way down in pretty much every frame, they're reasonably cheap, travel is easily adjustable and won't void your warrantee, they're reliable and function smoothly.

Couldn't you just not fully extend the dropper post? Like could you start with the saddle fully dropped, stand up in your riding position and then raise the saddle until it comes in contact with you?

I did that for a year when I bought my first dropper (tried to guess what size I needed and guessed wrong), you get tired of it quick! At first, you don't mind it, but on longer rides you're always hunting for the right position for your saddle. Going from that to a dropper that puts the seat in the right position every time is like fixing an annoying noise in your car; you don't realize how much it bothered you until you got rid of it!

@@TrailFeatures I seem to be in a position where any dropper post is going to be either too long or too short. I have a stupid bent seat tube on a size small frame. So I have next to nothing for insertion length but I need the post slammed as low as possible because I have ridiculously short legs. I only want a dropper post so I can actually get on the bike (but then of course the saddle is too low for proper pedaling)

I like your disclaimer but honestly bike mechanics aren't all geniuses, some don't understand engineering at all, it often shows when you have service done under warranty... Learn about the parts and do your homework it's the best bet for safety

@@anahadsharma8249 I have a 125 mm dropper post and it works just fine. Since the125 mm and the 150 mm are the same design... I would say most likely. The Brand x dropper post is the same as a trans x dropper post... So I'm also going to go out and say that this mod will work for trans x dropper posts as well.

@@ThePfannendude I am fairly certain the only differences between them (besides the model names and diameter) is external routing and internal cable routing. Since many companies buy transx posts and then slap their logo on it (example trek in some cases, giant in some cases, etc..) it is probably a really safe bet to assume it will work. However, since I do not own every version... I can't confirm 100% I can confirm that my trek Roscoe 8 trans x post and the brand x post do work.
