The prices of some of these new bikes now is bordering on rediculous

Yes it's getting an expensive hobby isn't it - I think PCP has a lot to do with it....driving prices up as people who previously wouldn't have bought a £20K+ brand new bike now can have one.....

Agree. Hopefully different options fill into the new pricing holes into the market. Sadly tho you might be paying higher prices for lower end bikes which happen to also have the same price bump.

Andy, regarding the 20mph limits, Andrew lives in a village. I live in Swansea and the 20mph limits are a real pain causing longer journey times and larger queues at traffic lights. You can drive along a road where the speed limit will go from 40 to 30 to 20 then back to 30 or 40 in a few hundred yards, it’s patently ridiculous. There are also drivers who drive at 15 in a 20 in case their caught speeding and those who continue to do 20 in 30 and 40 limits. The fact that half a million people have signed the petition calling for the limits to revert proves that Andrew is in the minority. If the Welsh government had put this to the people of Wales in a referendum there is no way it would have happened. Unfortunately the Minister for Transport is an ex director of Sustrans a cycling and walking pressure group and is determined to try and force people out of cars and motorcycles despite the fact that public transport in Wales is abysmal and many areas have none. The Welsh government is spending millions on “active travel” routes that virtually no one uses while most road schemes have been stopped. It’s a total disaster.

Interestingly, bus stops are having to be dropped as with the reduced limit they are not able to complete their runs in the allotted time. Thus, public transport has been made even worse.

I'd still rather have 20 zones than those horrid speed bumps personally. Nothing but suspension issues with all my vehicles owned. In Edinburgh we just call them terrible roads 😂. Seriously, I'd rather be filtering at 5-10mph than stuck in a car/bus. Icy months ahead so that may be me soon to get into the city 😢
@derekm6236 Жыл бұрын
Maybe at the next elections, vote for someone who doesn't support the 20 limits? Does the Minister for Transport have a constituency? If so, should be easy to turf him out of his two government jobs.
@stevecade857 Жыл бұрын
I quite often use cruise control when riding in 30 mph & 40 mph zones to help. My cruise control doesn't go as low as 20 mph which means I'll have to spend much more time looking at my speedo than what's ahead.

As an R1200RS owner I’m intrigued by the potential for the R1300GS’ engineering approach to bring the RS form factor back into the telelever front suspension configuration. The R1200R machines I’d had 2007 & 2011 both utilized the Telelever front design and were excellent machines featuring handling characteristics I must say I miss in my R1200RS. As the 1200/1250 RS & GS machines up to now have a weight that is practically the same, the “penalty” for a Telelever isn’t a matter of lightness.
@busterrabbit Жыл бұрын
I think that certainly with the 1200/1250R it's a matter of packaging. The R models have a conventional single radiator, possible because of the conventional forks, whereas GS's have a radiator either side, which would look a bit incongruous on naked roadster. Having ridden numerous GS's and had an R1100RT and a K1600GT I prefer the telelever front end to my current "conventional" 2015 R1200R Sport, but understand why BMW went with conventional forks. Having previously owned /6, /7 and R100RS models I was concerned that the R1200R would suffer from the excessive dive of the earlier long travel forks, but the conventional forks work well (I have ESA), especially here in Europe where I can actually run in Dynamic mode because the roads are so much better than in the UK.

I was at the local BMW dealer the other day, and had to sit on the new GS1300. And rising it from the sidestand reminded me of the "old" GS850. Topheavy indeed. A big minus in my point of view. New jingle sounds...well, reminds me a bit of kids telly. But that's fine, suits the "Hello kids!" 🙂 Now all that tech...in my book, we passed that line some time ago. So many gadgets that nobody asked for and are possible problems in the future. "Perfect position for the screen" what is that? Just because engineers can make it, doesn't make us customers need or want it. Thank you mr Flyer!

Lol, it’s anything but top heavy 😂 If you strip a GS down there is very little weight above the wheel axles. They can feel cumbersome with a full tank, especially the ADV version, but I suspect the bike you sat on was empty.

Hi Andy, thanks for another 'Bike News'. Two points that I would like to make about some of your content today. Firstly, I agree with you re BMW's pricing structure for the new GS. I recently went along to a dealership with a view to buying one next spring. But as you said, once you start speccing the bike up to your requirements, you very quickly find yourself with a price tag well north of £20k. For me, that is just a crazy price to pay for something that will potentially only do around 4000 miles a year, and lose half of it's value in 3 years. My second comment is that I am very much looking forward to your upcoming 'Japan' series. My son has lived just outside of Tokyo for the last 5yrs, and 6 months ago we went out there to visit him for the first time. What a fantastic Country, we fell in love with it. So I will be very interested to hear your experiences. Thanks again for all your hard work! 🙂👍

Whilst cars have continued to evolve and offer more and better value for money, motorcycles seem to have gone the other way. I recall first looking at new cars to buy in the 70s when things like a radio or a door mirror were considered a luxury add on; now of course, they are almost universally standard, along with lots of other things. Even air con is nothing unusual in a basic car. Bike manufacturers on the other hand now charge extra for everything they can get away with. A centre stand - once regarded as essential, that will be another £200. A mudguard which actually does something, such as stopping mud - £150. A comfortable seat - £300, the list goes on.
@TheMissendenFlyer Жыл бұрын
Yes that's a very good point!

Agree Steve. Motorcycle performance peaked a good while ago IMO, they are no quicker now than they were in the mid 90’s, not really, they may have more power nowadays but (unless you are exceptionally talented) computers keep them shiny side up with 6 axis IMU’s, traction control, modes, anti wheelie blah blah blah. They simply cannot put the excess power down. EV cars have even blitzed the likes of ZZR1400’s off the line. The first Gen Hayabusa (which I had btw) had about 150 rwhp and no rider aids. That felt special and visceral. The tougher Euro regs have also contributed to the strangulation, aswell as more congestion, crappy roads, speed cameras and lower limits. Apart from that lot throwing more and more unnecessary tech is the only thing they can do to keep ahead of the joneses and keep prices artificially high. PCP has ruined things with £20k bikes being nothing out of the ordinary. I think that’s exactly why the likes of RE have captured so many buyers. Good vfm, good looking, no rider aids or gadgets, simple machines in a digital age.

Another tour! Great! Amazing country to visit. Plus point is you don’t have to remember to ride on the right. Bikes are so expensive now, as an owner of two newish BMWs I’ve decided these are my last top end bike purchases. The “midrange” bikes are much closer to £10K and presumably due to emission regulations capacity keeps increasing (e.g. KTM 990 just announced), and despite all the hoo ha about the new “more expensive than a car” 1300, I’m sure most riders would be more happy with a 700-900cc midrange bike, where you can actually use the power available at legal road speeds.

Really looking forward to your Japan tour - I'll live my bucket list destination vicariously! I understand the 'no money' comment about the GS if you've been to Japan... With regards to the 20mph comment, I live in a village in Weardale. The route to the Pennines and Hartside Pass is much loved by the SAS (Saturday and Sunday) brigade of bikers, a very few of which think nothing of the 30mph speed limit. I have two dogs a cat and an 18 month old toddler (note the order of priority) all of which could run out into the road unpredictably. I don't know whether 20 mph limits would make any difference at all, but I just wish people would respect my 'home'. That's goes for 'loud pipes' too. I'm no shrinking violet biker - I ride a Ducati - but I always try to respect the places where people live. Rant over...

Good review TMF that Japan trip looks awesome, went there back in the 70’s to a karate training camp, needless to say it was brutal and didn’t see anything other than the airport and the training camp👍

I am with you on the Gold Wing matter. I have four bikes and love riding my 2013 Triumph T100, no ABS or Traction Control just a clock and a trip meter. How do I manage!

The Mcn test on the new GS was as expected high praise for the bike and rightly so. Although it did breakdown on them.

The Vespa island tour was really good. Computer fought me on comments. The museum sounds great. Time well spent. Japan, a traditional crap? Oh boy.

The way Triumph was able to cut the price on the Scrambler 1200X was by replacing Brembo Calipers & brakes with Nissen, among other quality component cuts in the suspension (Marzocchi instead of Ohlins). It also saddens me that (at least in the North American market) the 1200X seems to have supplanted the 1200XC. Perhaps the folks in Hinckley figured there wasn't a whole lot of difference between the XC and the XE. I'm glad I have my XC model, and this move by Triumph guarantees that I'll be riding it for many, many years to come.

At least in terms of density, the gear box is all steel where the engine has a lot of aluminum. I haven't seen a 1300 in person, but I'd withhold judgement that the CoG has raised. I tend to doubt it has.

The R1300 GS is growing on me too... still not sure about that light but not ween one in the flesh either. I'll wait for the adventure version as I've always preferred that version. I've never felt like it was lacking power though to be honest. My biggest disappointment was to the lack of illuminated switches but finally an electric screen.
@TheMissendenFlyer Жыл бұрын
...well on certain variants....

When you get to ride the 1300 GS you'll likely find the new 1300GS is a good bike, but there's also a bit of marketing-con in the mix there. The claim than BMW radically cut the GS weight for one; standard GS has no centre-stand and fuel capacity is down a litre. It's a bit like a packet of crisps that stay the same price but the bags keep get smaller. Some of kit comes 'standard' but now only on the pricier models.

Saw the new GS in my Local BMW dealer and thought it looked far better in the metal than it appeared in the photos, the only negative to me was it looked small and seemed to have lost its imposing on road stature which for me was part of the appeal of the GS.

Yes - will be interesting to see how die hard fans react in regards to sales…

Yeah I find those shows a bit meh (hard to get into, expensive, same old bike celebs rolling out the same stuff) unless there's something in particular I want to see...I'm sure I'll go at some point in the future again but just fancied taking a year or two off.....beyond me why they don't make more of motorcycle KZbinrs there (I'm not bitter, just think they're missing a trick!)

Great stuff as ever. The Japan tour looks absolutely amazing - looking forward to that, as well as the other forthcoming stuff. I did hear recently that Honda were looking to patent a system which incorporates a Japanese toilet option for the Goldwing seats. Presumably that’d be right up your alley, no? 😮

I went to see the new GS in the flesh and its not as substantial as the current model and would cost £10k to upgrade. So, I’m keeping my 1250GS and have bought a Triumph Scrambler with the £10k. Feels like I’ve got a free bike 😂
@Erictheha1fabee Жыл бұрын
Andy, I'm really looking forward to your Japanese tour (I posted the picture of Kinkaku-ji in the rain on FB or Ig?). Please don't sell your GS. Get the 1300 by all means but you would regret that one. Its been with you from new and you have a lot of history with it. Like RV's VFR800 please let it have a corner of your garage.
@TheMissendenFlyer Жыл бұрын
No plans to sell it currently - though i do need any spare corners in my garage!

My paranoid thoughts on adding microphones to the Goldwing to help auto adjust the wind screen is that seems dodgy to say the least. My first thought is that they want to hook that up to Apple CarPlay or whatever other equivalent there is, to listen in to you (including what music you're listening to, what you're saying to your pillion, your riding mates, your phone calls or whoever else you might be communicating with on your ride, or even just when you're talking to yourself) and sell that information for advertising. Before people say that I'm completely unhinged, there was an article in the Swedish edition of Auto Motor & Sport where they did a comprehensive rundown on just how much information you're giving up when using connectivity services provided by pretty much all car manufacturers these days. That was not a pretty read!

Looking forward to the Japan series 👍. I had a ride on the new GS13 a couple of weeks ago, unfortunately the weather was crap with damp/wet roads, I'm actually the same weight, height, as you, even without the height adjustment it was fine, and, the engine is amazing, the thing that struck me was that is it too good? 🤔.
@TheMissendenFlyer Жыл бұрын
Is that possible??
@k.o.486 Жыл бұрын
Totally Agree with you on the Windscreen for the GW! If they are going to add to the cost they should fix the BlueTooth, stop requiring a headset to get Apple Carplay and give us a more comfortable seat out of the factory.
