55 Mile Solo Bikepacking New River Trail, Galax to Pulaski, Virginia
New River Trail State Park is a 57 mile linear park that lies along an abandonded railroad line. It is Virginia's longest linear state park. The centerpiece of the park is the New River Trail itself, which runs from the City of Galax on the southern end to the Town of Pulaski on the northern end. There is also a spur trail that leads to the Town of Fries. The trail lies in Carroll, Grayson, Wythe, and Pulaski Counties as well as the independent City of Galax. There are numerous access points along the length of the trail. Primitive camping is available at several campgrounds which can be accessed on foot/bike/horse, or via the river. None of the campgrounds are directly accessible to vehicles. The park contains 3 main bridges across the New River as well as dozens of smaller bridges and trestles, 2 hand dug tunnels, numerous historical sites and other points of interest, and stunning scenery. Biking and horseback riding a the most popular activities in the park. Fishing, kayaking, and tubing on the river are also popular.
The railroad was built in the late 1800s and served many industries that thrived in the New River valley, including furniture manufacturing, logging, iron mining, steel manufacturing, and others. By the late 1980s most of those industries had moved offshore or had shut down completely, and the railroad line was abandoned.
Despite the name, the New River is actually the oldest river in North America, and the second oldest in the world. It is also one of the few rivers that flow north. The New River begins in western North Carolina, flows across southwest Virginia and into West Virginia, where it joins the Gauley River to form the Kanawha River. The New River was originally known as "Woods River" until settlers re-named in the 1700s.
On my visit. I left my vehicle at the Dora Junction trail head and arranged for a shuttle down to Galax. I entered the park at Galax Station and rode 3.5 miles to the Cliffview Campground and spend the first night there. On Day 2 I rode about 28 miles to Foster Falls, where I stayed another night at the Millrace Campground. On Day 3 I completed the trail by riding about 23.5 miles to Pulaski. On this trip, I opted to skip the 5.5 mile Fries Spur Trail. This was my first ever bike-packing trip. It was a successful and fun trip. Thanks for watching!
