Old man says he was a cyclist back in the days and used to ride 90 miles per day on a daily basis, with his rastaman friend who is a big muscular guy (seems like this one is well known in the neighbourhood?). Then he's just laughing as he's happy to meet some cyclists and advice to always be careful with the buses while being in traffic.

Just found this.. great vid. My wife’s parents are from Mauritius and I keep a cheapy mountain bike at there place when I visit. There are some superb cycling routes in that country, especially in-land and off road. Did you hire bikes or take your own over? Am thinking of taking my road bike next time in a Bike Box.

Looks like a paradise aside from the buses. I checked how hard it would be to get there from Los Angeles and its seems like a quick 30 hours of travel with all the connections. So I think this video will be my main experience with this little island! Also great to hook up with locals. Ive always meant to do a veloguide in a new place to see the sites. Im always nervous venturing out alone on new roads.

It’s a surprisingly long climb after riding the flat coast roads, especially in the heat. By the way if you head back to Grand Baie be sure to check out The Beach House bar - get there before sunset for an awesome view. They do great food and drinks too!

If you want more suffering try bassin blanc climb. The routes in the west are very nice. (chamarel, bassin blanc, choisy, grand bassin, maconde are some nice spots)

The thing about back in the day stories is that so many of them seem like only yesterday when you get older and look back on them. And as an older guy all of a sudden--I turned 60 four months ago--I enjoy telling my stories and seeing the stories of Francis and reading the stories in the comments section. And I relate to the gent sharing his warning about weight gain or whatever--you get older and the body slows down and you get bigger if you don't watch out. And I relate to Francis riding his bike in the sunshine on an island. It reminds me of a high school trip to Athens in '77--I was a California kid who lucked out and got to attend Frankfurt American High School in West Germany because of my father's construction work there--and me and my bud Bill rented bikes on a local island and rode around all day and it was great. And I could say more about that day from back in my day :)

@@glennoc8585 Thanks, you're too kind and who knows maybe one of these days I'll do something, it would be a kick to add to the narrative in that way and there were so many stories, so many experiences we lived together as American teens in the middle of a major European city in the middle of the Seventies. And I am so thankful I never got caught in the negative vibe of wanting to get back to the States; unfortunately, some classmates sounded like some soldiers with the "I can't wait to get back to the world, I can't wait to get back to the world" moan. But that was never me and many of my friends, we were happy to be over there and we were adventurous and all of it, everything, so many new experiences, experiences you weren't even expecting. Like chasing mopeds, one of my favorite sporting activities. And that started on my commutes to school through city streets on my Rixie ten-speed. And it was just instinctive, I was a racer at heart at everything and how could I not want to catch that dude on a moped? And O the catch was the best, such an accomplishment. But I was always cool about it, pulling up alongside the moped rider and muttering a friendly, "Tag." And then a light or a turn or something would give me a chance to catch my breath and recover and keep riding to school. And throughout my three school years in Frankfurt, I had an after-school job at the commissary and even that was a big adventure, being fifteen and driving a forklift and unloading 18-wheelers and being allowed to eat damaged food tossed into a big bin. And my favorite was a crushed case of Pop-Tarts which a friend and I found one evening--"Oooh, Pop-Tarts!" It was some fuel for the journey ahead.
