Just went through this with my wife. Already had a 2005 Honda 919 Hornet and bought a 2017 DRZ400s. She had trouble accepting spending the money on the DRZ first. Had to go through 2 negotiations, 1 phone call at 9am at work and a discussion at 3am, yes AM, the night before my 4 hour trip one way to see and buy it, and then the aftershock of her mentioning that the Honda 919 had to go. She's on maternity leave and cash is tight but the deal I got on the DRZ was something I couldn't miss. I had to compromise with her. But it's not over, there's a couple other bikes on my mind for the near future. I'm 39 years old and I feel like I gotta live it up a bit before my body can't handle it anymore. Long story short, comprised a setback but will replenish my motorcycle collection in time. :-)

Kinda in the same boat. My advice is first get lots of life insurance. With a young family I wouldn't want you to be flying into a tree and he second to the last thing to go through your head being the thought of what an idiot you are for buying a motorcycle. Second, buy enough motorcycles that she won't notice when you get one more.

You nailed it. I've tried most of these schemes, and for the most part, they've worked for me. After 24 years, my wife has realized that the price of knowing what I'm doing and who I'm doing it with (and in the process staying out of trouble because she knows where I'm at) is worth the cost of me spending money buying, riding and rebuilding bikes. No way though could I pull the new KTM scheme from the executive account, it wouldn't match the color of anything else I have. I have to start small with cheap beaters and fix them up. Initial sticker shock is much lower that way and I don't get many questions on the many parts that wind up at my door.

Great relationship advice. I wish I had known this when I came home with an 84 XL350 along with an 84 XR350 ($500 for both). I told my wife many times I was getting them. She understood the words I was saying, they just didn't make any sense to her. When she saw them, she asked if they run. I said they both did at one time. We've hardly spoken about them since, but I do have them both running and getting ready to get legal.

I had a XR400 and dual sported it. Honda reliability, great low and mid range, the suspension can be dialed ok too, but the 5 speed falls short on the roadway, the bike is very tall for me, and the cold start on hondas is exacerbated with kick start. Its a great bike, I'd like to have your comparison with the DR

I did that last year (buy another bike and not tell the Wife),LOL! Bought a sweet old XT250 (1984) from it's 2nd owner. The bike garage (shed) was overflowing with bikes and I had 1 also parked next to the porch under a tarp. That was a 1991 WHITE KDX200 that I was going through to redo...the XT obviously was white and red,and the only part of the KDX that was visible under it's tarp was the front tire and a bit of the white front fender. So I pushed the KDX behind the shed (where there's a make-shift overhang which also helps keep weather off things like the mower) and locked it up there out of site,and parked the new-to-me XT250 in the KDX's former spot next to the porch. So all she could see was a front knobby tire and...a bit of white front fender,LOL,it was over a month before she even noticed (she caught me putting the KDX back behind the shed after I'd been out to some trails on it,and noticed there was still a bike sitting there with knobby and white front fender poking out from the tarp,DOH! xD ) SO she asked "WTH???". You know that meme on the Book of Face where this cute little girl is over exaggerating a shoulder shrug? I did that and said ".....aliens...." and contniued putting the KDX to it's parking spot xD

Now this is the most perfect kickstart dual sport bike ever made..I have ridden them and there is no comparison between the xr400 and xr250..You will love this bike and tons of aftermarket parts and knowledge out there on this bike..Check the valve clearance ASAP and you are good to go..

If you are doing the forks get the correct springs for your weight. also consider the race tech gold valve only $189.00 Install it yourself the xr forks are so simple..

I haven't ridden the XR enough to know and I put a pumper carb in which I'm sure will do worse than the stock carb. The WR250R seems like a much better street bike and the XR seems like a much better trail bike.

I have both, the XR250 and the XR400. I like them both equally. They are both great bikes, but have slightly different personalities/characteristics. The 250 feels quicker in the woods, but it should, it's a little smaller and lighter. The 400 of course has quite a bit more power, and it's awesome on most of the stuff I ride in Colorado, plus it runs better in the high altitude, having more displacement. But they are both great, no real way to say which is better. But I do know that an XR650L totally sucks. A friend of mine has one and I tried it out, it's freakin' huge and weighs a ton. I hated it. And he did too, so he sold it and got a DRZ400 which is also another really great bike.

hey mate is this xr400 a good investment over a xr250/drz250 because theres a 2004 xr400 nearby and theres also a 2005 drz250 really closeby, the trails ill be doing are full of hard turns but you could fit a nissan navara through there if you wanted, any help would be great

I've never ridden a drz250, so I'll stick to comparing the two XRs. I'd say if you're under 6ft tall the xr250 might be more fun.If you're an intermediate to advance rider the XR400 might be more fun. To me the XR400 feels taller, but close to the same weight as the XR250. The power on the XR250 feels like just enough and the power on the XR400 feels like way more than enough, and in a good way. Hope that helps.

Cheers mate, I think im around 5'11 and im not the good of a rider because most of my experience comes from a half broken down klr250 and a ct200. Due you reckon a xr250 would be able to keep up with a bunch of enduro bikes like the CRF150RB, CRF250x and a husqvana 2stroke 250 because thats what most of my mates ride

Ryan Barton I think you'll be a much bigger variable than the bike in being able to keep up. I also think it's more fun to ride a slower bike fast than a faster bike slow. So I say go 250 and if it's not enough keep it as a buddy bike and move up.

I prefer life in the fast lane but I am married to a speed bump too. I am currently in the dog house this week because I went out and bought my son his first dirt bike. She was mad because my two sons have only quads and she did not want a new toy for them but I wanted him to have dirt biking skills as well.

I don't have the Wife Check Valve installed... so I've got three and climbing hahaha! Makes sense... lol. The fact is, she can feel however she feels about it. You still have the bike. The irony is that if a man gives up all his hobbies and bows & scrapes to her every demand, she will lose all respect for him.
