If it still has the OEM exhaust pipe on it, ditch it. It's a really thick double-skinned item and simply swapping for a single-skinned pipe of the same diameter will liberate another 6+ BHP. That's not internet crap - talk to the SR500 Owners Club about how to basically deresrict the bike. A little bit more work on the intake end will get it from 31.5 to to 44BHP without putting undue stress on the engine - now that will be a fiesty little bike to ride. Also check the last 6 - 8 back issues of 'Classic Bike'; there was an article in one of them on the SR500 and the SR500 Owners Club. There will be some useful stuff in there for you.

It definitely wasn't when he first started working on it..the pistons and everything were completely froze up and took him several days of soaking and hammering to get it unstuck..and now it seems the clutch basket is also seized up, buuut other than the mechanical stuff being froze up the bike itself is beautiful and the paint and chrome are definitely awesome for the age.. don't think he will restore it though unfortunately it will probably be sold to someone who will finish it up I think is what he said on the other video.. wish I was close to him 😂 I'd love to have another project bike, im getting close to finishing my lil twinstar, it's back running/riding again just need a few more lil things then its new gaskets and paint time I think 😂

I've done very limited restorations throughout my life, and I've seen channels completely die because it takes 3 months to update on one. Craig is extremely skilled and overly taxed at the moment. Fixing older stuff is extremely difficult and breaks down into like a thousand super technical subproblems really quickly. I think it's time to take a week in Hawaii fixing a single minorly clogged jet for someone.

Good call, I've got a bike that won't run if it has resistor plugs (good luck finding that size without) with the standard resistor caps. It will still spark when you pull a plug out, but can't jump the gap when it's got the added resistance of compression/fuel.

Could the left side rotary valve be 180 out? If so, both sides would be open at the same time and you'd have no bottom end seal to pump fuel/air up the transfer ports. Put a nitrile glove over the carbs and watch for intake suction. Second, Put a new set of plugs in it. I've been bitten by this SO MANY TIMES :-) It ran on two cylinders before. Both coils probably did not fail. I would go through the engine timing again with fresh eyes. Visually verifying the rotary valve timing and ignition timing. Forget about the gear marks for a minute and turn the engine over and see if everything looks to be in time. Maybe pull the plugs, spin the engine over, and put a timing light on in to see if the firing time is close?

I sold it as is and took a $ 600 loss. It happens. Back in the 70s it wasn't uncommon for a RD to have automotive coils clamped to the front down tubes of the frame. You just need some big water hose clamps.
