My best recommendation for a multi-use bike tool is the Knipex 86 03 125 -Mini pliers. Can do the job of a standard pliers plus all your wrenches including pedal wrench. Excellent quality and lots of weight saving. I would never go on biketour without it.

Hello. Thank you for all your videos! I'd like to throw in a few of my go-to's, three in particular. The first is the Wolf Tooth Components 8-Bit System Bundle #2 (for tubeless tires), it has everything you could possibly ever need in a slick compact design - I carry this in my frame bag. Then the second is the Day Saver Essentials Bundle for an ultra minimal and ultra lightweight option - I carry this in my backpack or in my bib shorts/shirt pocket, and, they offer different bundles with different mounting options. And finally, the Dynaplug Pill, which I also carry in my frame bag. Yes, there are redundancies as certain tools exist simultaneously on each tool but the ergonomics are sightly different for each. Plus as saying goes...an ounce of prevention is greater than a pound of cure. With these three tools (and your patch kits) you can literally fix anything that happens to your bike.

Instead of pannier spacers i use a bit of garden hose, split lengthwise. Tape or velcro strap over split to prevent it dropping off. Light, cheap, ready avaliable. Cheers.

Everything I carry, I did my best to standardise all nuts and bolts to minimise variety before setting out. The small pump is practically useless to get pressure in the tube and increases the risk of snapping the valve. Useful video to share experience especially with the hanger 🚴‍♀️🚴‍♀️🚴‍♀️

Thank you for your content, It always puts a smile on my face with the way you attack your problems. I’ve found a little extra solid wire and some thin strong cord helps in many cases. Your right about zip-ties and electrical and or duct tape as well. They can fix ( temporarily) just about anything including bags, tents, etc. Miss seeing more of your adventures. Keep it up, Tschuss!😊

My recommendation for a multi tool is the Blackburn Big Switch, great bit of kit! As for pliers, I also have a Victorinox Skipper which has a great blade and other useful bits like a corkscrew!! Happy travels and brake like the wind !!

Good point about the multi-tool problem. I gave up on a multi-tool hex key set and switched to a set of individual hex keys for exactly that reason. Leatherman penknives are very useful because they turn into pliers, which makes them excellent for grabbing brake cables etc but also replacing guitar strings! But more importantly... on the subject of tyre levers... are we going to get a compilation video of all the times Giant Cheerio cursed while repairing a flat inner tube? (preferably swearing in English AND German). ;-)

You can ride a chain for maybe even longer than 10 km, but the problem is that when you must change it, it can happen you'll have to change the cassette too, as the bad chain damages it if you ride for a long time. I had this problem twice before I understood the reason.

Hi Laura, thanks for sharing your experience. I wondered what type of inner tubes you carry as these seem very small and might be a good alternative for the 1 standard tube taking way too much space and weight in my pannier

I liked your video, but I would like to say that if we are going to do long tours, we have Schwalbwe marathon tires and it is almost impossible to burst them. They're just a little more expensive.

Thanks for that tip! I never tried marathons but I am riding schwalbes g-one tires. Went tubeless with those 1000s of kilometres ago and did not have any flats since then 🫶🏼

Instead of pliers, regular multi tool like leatherman or gerber would probably be better, since it also acts as pliers and has other handy stuff too. Probably about same weight too as those pretty hefty pliers. Something like leatherman sidekick or rev. Wave is super popular but it's has just too much unnecessary stuff. But yeah, for bike maintenance. Bike multitool is pain in the ass for serious stuff. Great to have around in emergency when commuting or biking for sport, but when you know you are going to need those tools when bikepacking at some point, like you said it's pain.

Gear cable and derailleur hanger are a must on long trips. I haven't don't long trips, but one of my most recent unexpected bike faults was with the gear cable as well. Besides the cable, inner and outer cable caps are also necessary.

I also carry cone spanners and I have used them once. Also some spare ball bearings and grease. Also some spare chain links as well as a quick link. And a spare dolly wheel and screw for the rear derailleur. Yes the screws are put in with locktight glue but if one came out, chances are you'd never find it, or the screw.

Interesting video ! I ended up with bike chunky multi tools too. In my repair kit I do like ratchet tool with dedicated hex bits for my bike. More convenient than allen keys, because sometime you don't have enough space to make a long turn with an allen key. Topeak have some good ones or Silca T-ratchet. For a very good pair of mini pliers, check Knipex cobra xs. Theres no wire cutter on it but don't expect to cut cleanly a stainless cable with any flat wire cutter like the ones on yours or on any Leatherman. (I tried)

Replace the pliers with a small plumber's pipe wrench, it will do everything the pliers does and more. Get a proper chain breaker. Old chains break and the pins are tighter, so you need more torx than what you got there. Also make sure the breaker is able to push a pin fully out. Some don't and you won't be able to use a multi link.

"and more." any example relating to modern bicycle repairs, which specifically speaks for a pipe wrench instead of pliers? I can think of examples of needle-nose pliers (i.e. something different than in the video), e.g. to remove and reinsert/bend the cotter pins on my brakes; or to hold Bowden cables etc. I also had the Knipex Cobra, but no real use for it in contrast to the Knipex 25 01 125

If you carry spare spokes, how would you replace drive side rear wheel spokes? Do you carry a Casette tool or a Hypercracker with you?

The barrel adjuster on my rear derailleur (and frame) breaks easily and I'd recommend carrying a few of those, especially when traveling where they can get bumped around. You should always put your bike down derailleur side up and remove the derailleur when boxing it, but it can still break.

I use a Silca Torque wrench ratchet multitool. Much better at getting to hard to reach bolts than the standard type of "Swiss army knife" style multitool. I also cary a Lyzene chain tool that are chain pliers for quick links as well as a chain breaker and a Leatherman that has pliers as well as a number of other tools and blades. I too cary a spare mech hanger, brake pads, spokes (and cleats) as well as electrical and gaffer tape. I too have a small bottle of sealant, a patch kit, and 2 TPU tubes. I've found that waxed chain (topped up daily with a drip on wax lube) really good to maintain the chain and keep it clean. For cleaning I carry a (very) small can of WD40 and use cloths from supermarkets for a few days each to thoroughly clean the chain daily.

If your rear derailleur cable ever breaks again and you dont have a spare, you can take a length of that broken cable and tie a knot in the cable large enough that it will not go through the routing hole in your derailleur. You then use the normal screw to secure the other end of the cable in the derailleur line normal. You can choose which gear to be in based on the tension on the cable. Hope this helps and i explained it well enough.

Thanks a lot for that tip! It’s super helpful! Unfortunately, my derailleur cable ripped and then got stuck, so I didn’t realize it was broken. When I tried to remove it, it didn’t move because it was jammed. But yeah, you learn from each and every weird situation! ;)

These are Latex or TPU inner tubes. Very light compared to butyl, less sensitive to puncture but almost impossible to repair with patches. That is rather strange that Lara brings patches in combination with TPU inner tubes. I hope she made some tests with the dedicated glue...
